In this recording my father recites the constitutional pledge, borrowed from within the preamble of the Constitution of People’s Republic of Bangladesh.

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Independence of Bangladesh, I remembered that on the first day of this new millennium (1st January, 2000) I had accompanied my father to Ramna Botomul in Dhaka, where he had invited citizens of Bangladesh to renew our constitutional pledge. I took the pledge that morning along with fellow citizens.

My father, Barrister M. Amir-Ul Islam, is a freedom fighter and an organiser of the Liberation War of 1971. He is the author of the Proclamation of Independence, and also served in the drafting committee of the constitution. As part of the Mujibnagar Government he had designed the official government seal of Bangladesh, which is still in use.

Today I recorded my father reciting the pledge over the phone. I present it to you here. I too believe that renewing this pledge is very important for every citizen of our beloved motherland.

গৌর তোমায় ভজে সব হারালাম হলাম পথের ভিখারি 
আমার ধন কুলমান জীবন যৌবন সব নিল গৌর হরি

সকাতরে ওই কাঁদিছে সকলে - রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর 

সকাতরে ওই কাঁদিছে সকলে, শোনো শোনো পিতা।
কহো কানে কানে, শুনাও প্রাণে প্রাণে মঙ্গলবারতা।।
          
ক্ষুদ্র আশা নিয়ে রয়েছে বাঁচিয়ে, সদাই ভাবনা।
যা-কিছু পায় হারায়ে যায়, না মানে সান্ত্বনা।।

সুখ-আশে দিশে দিশে  বেড়ায় কাতরে–
মরীচিকা ধরিতে চায় এ মরুপ্রান্তরে।। 

ফুরায় বেলা, ফুরায় খেলা, সন্ধ্যা হয়ে আসে–
কাঁদে তখন আকুল-মন,  কাঁপে তরাসে।।

কী হবে গতি, বিশ্বপতি, শান্তি কোথা আছে–
তোমারে দাও, আশা পূরাও, তুমি এসো কাছে।।
