In April 2019, I received an invitation from Essen Philharmonie to write a piece for the Festival Now! 2020 edition, which includes music and musicians from all over the world, and whose motto is “Von fremden Ländern und Menschen.”

I was intrigued by the motto. As a composer who has lived all over the world and is influenced by different musical traditions, I did not feel that my piece would readily convey the sense of “fremden Ländern und Menschen.” My musical choices have always avoided the immediately intelligible as “Western” or “Middle Eastern.” At the same time, however, I wanted to compose a piece that explored the multiple layers and meanings of cross-cultural encounters. 

I reached out to the wonderful New York-based poet Yvette Christiansë. Born in South Africa and a surviver of the apartheid, Christiansë too has lived in many countries, first in Swaziland and Australia, where she escaped with her family, and then in the United States, where she is now a professor of African Studies and English Literature at Barnard College. Christiansë offered the following verses that inspired the composition. 

Hemispheres is a one-movement piece with three contrasting parts. The first part…. . The second part… . In the vivace last part, all members of the ensemble, including the conductor, will sing and voice the verses.
