I'm still keeping the original uploaded, partially to show how much i've grown and partially because it has a bit of music not in the new version that i've heard some people like. anyways i hope you enjoy this piece!

MASQUERMYND is a nonverbal journey through the mind, told through choreographed, dance-like action, dealing with the inner struggles of personal and sexual identity. A masked person wakes in a room and doesn't know where they are or how they got there. They encounter themselves in different identities, genders, and permutations, confronting their own psyche in a maze of their own mind. Masquer: Maker or wearer of masks, Mynd: "Film" or "Picture" in Icelandic.

I've been working on this music since February 2020 and, in September of 2022, I finally completed it and uploaded the film to Youtube. Although I've been composing since 2017, this is my first major project, and I'm happy with how it's come out.

If you're wondering where the music from the bartender scenes and the end credits is, it's not here because I didn't write it. Those songs are "Time" and "Unwhere" by the artist Reeder, from their album "It is the Nature of Dreams to End". I found out about Reeder through The Adventure Zone (They did some music for the final episodes of it), and fell in love with their music. MASQUERMYND

This is a song I have been working on since February 2020, right before COVID hit Minnesota, that I have now finished for my Sound Arts class. I was messing around in Reaper with some sounds ripped from a video game (Earthbound for the Super Nintendo) and found one that I really, really liked. The soundfont it’s a part of called it “Unsettling Opponent” since it’s used heavily in a song by that name, and it has a rather unique, unsettling tone. Instrument sounds on the Super Nintendo were usually created by taking a second or less of a single instrument sample sound and looping a section of it, to give the impression of an instrument like a violin or a guitar without having to store more than about a second of sound on the SNES’s very limited memory. This led to some really interesting sounds, including the one that I featured as the main melody and chord instrument for this song. 

I was messing around with the “Unsettling Opponent” instrument and came up with a little 3-note riff (the one you hear at the beginning of the song) that I liked. I wrote a melody to go over it that really emphasized dissonant intervals that didn’t really match any singular key, the point being to emphasize the lack of consonance between the notes to create interest. I got really, really “in the zone” and proceeded to write what I consider one of the best pieces of music I’ve ever created. Although I had basically the whole song sketched out, it wasn’t finished and needed more work on the arrangement. I’ve been putting off finishing this song for forever, since I felt so intimidated by how well I did when I first worked on it – I was thinking, like, “What if I can’t do that well again?” However, after finishing another project for my sound arts class I was feeling pretty confident in myself, and I decided to give a shot at completing this for my final project of the semester. I reworked a lot of the arrangement while keeping the basic melody and chords the same, and I think while it’s just as good of a song at the core as it was in 2020, it has much greater impact and feeling to it now. I’ve learned a lot about arranging and mixing since then and I’m really glad I had this opportunity to apply that to this song I loved so much. 

In terms of what the song’s about, I kind of imagine it scores like, an animated music video of someone getting abducted by aliens, and then, like, the aliens swapping bodies with the person? Or something? I haven’t really figured out a specific story yet. In any case, I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I did making it.

This track was written in 2017 and arranged and performed for string trio in 2019. Performed by the extremely talented Chartreuse Trio as a part of Junior Composers Institute, a composition summer camp I went to that greatly helped me develop my skills as a composer.

i had an assignment in my sound arts class to create a piece of music by digitally editing existing sounds. and. i sure have done that.

The CORE Of Two Trucks

in my sound design class we were assigned to create an ambient soundscape to match an image of art from a certain pool of choices. I chose "The Dinner Party" by Derek Boshier. I thought it would be fun to mess around with pitch shifting, and figured out a technique where i pitch shifted stuff but also kept the original pitch in the background (equal levels of dry and wet signal). This piece uses the song "Moonglow" by Benny Goodman, pitch bends added by me.

The Lively Dead

a track i made at composition camp in summer of 2018. probably the best singular song id made up to this point, with the most well developed melody and most solid overall form. theres a part in the middle (when it changes key) that i dont like and im working on an improvement of but for right now this is what ya get. ok so this track. i came up w the main melody in summer of 2017 for a camp but it wasn't really developed properly so from fall of 2018 to spring of 2019 i worked on it and now its p much done. basically just a dumb ass banger w lots of satisfying awesome melodies and a killer main melody. not my most elegant work but i really like this

Prism Break

hooo boy. its the big one boys. ok so this is the first vocal song ive ever written. i wrote the basic verse + chorus melody and lyrical idea last june (2019) and at a summer camp i went to in july (Junior Composers) i wrote it into a full song. the lyrics were recorded at 1 am on an extremely tight schedule so i didnt have time to make them sound good, so theres some off key notes here and there and everywhere but for now it should do to be able to show people the song i made. idk exactly what i was doing with the lyrics, it was just sort of an idea i had that i then went along with for the whole thing. i think it ended up sounding like a funny jokejoke song but i didnt really intend it that way, i actually wrote it seriously??? but this is how it is i guess. in any case its probably the singular best song ive written so far, with an actual proper form and development to it. maybe another day ill come back to touch up the lyrics and actually mix + record it properly. for now this is what you get, i hope you enjoy

Unfortunate Postman

heres the musescore version of unfortunate postman. this doesnt have lyrics and has a goofy sounding choir for the melody but it also is way better mixed (since musescore mixes things decently by default) so you can hear all the individual parts a bitttt better. everything else is more or less the same except the electric guitar is replaced by a synth square wave, since that's about the closest musescore can get to a guitar sound (that doesnt sound like absolute ass)

Unfortunate Postman (Musescore)

Ok hey heres this track. I wrote it last year at a composition camp (i actually wrote this BEFORE unfortunate postman but just havent gotten around to posting it until now). Sigh.... ive started working in reaper now (and have been making some REALLY GOOD STUFF) which means this is gonna be the Last of the Musescore Days........ sign........ this track is pretty good overall. The violins sound terrible lol and its just the adalusian cadence the whole damn time (except for the beginning but thats its own can of worms) but its got some really really strong material in it!!! I really like it. still sad but good to say gbye to musescore tho......

Viridian Affliction

Ok so this is a song i wrote like a year ago. i banged out basically all of it with the intention of just fucking making something and not thinking too hard about it being "good" or "unique" or whatever, just making something for the hell of it. i did some more work on it i think last fall?? and touched up some final touches last night. also its in musescore and i KNOW i said viridian affliction was the last musescore thing i would ever post but thats because i FORGOT about this! and it already sounds GOOD in musescore so fuck it!! anyways here it is i think its p nice

PS: It loops halfway through but if you listen closely you MIGHT be able to notice a SLIGHT difference or two in the second half! >;)

Ice Cube

Ok so here we have a CHIPTUNE! (made with earthbound square wave, earthbound sine wave and gameboy drums)

This is sort of the first track I've published (or that I *will* publish, since by definition I'm writing this before I've uploaded this)that has sort of my new "Compositional Style". Not chiptune necessarily, just a focus on melody and overall structure, and also doing some cool shit w chords and stuff. This winter/spring I had sort of a "revelation" about music, when I tried learning some stuff from Undertale on piano for the first time in awhile. It was basically so good that it turned my brain inside out and expanded my mind to what kinds of cool shit I can make. I've been writing a LOT of music this year, a LOT of cool new stuff that I feel is on another level above anything I've made before, and this is the first I've actually finished enough to upload. So, enjoy, and I hope to show more soon!
