Kerem Akdag is one of the most exciting and versatile artists that we discovered mid last year, with Moovmnt labelling him as one of the best-comers of 2014. He has also won fans in the form of current house heayweights Detroit Swindle for his low-slung house productions, and this remix of TAJ's single 'Taj Yo'self' cements the fact that Kerem is a name that we would be hearing for a long time to come. Singapore, 23rd January: “but do you see what you've been missin'?” Tim De Cotta implores on the opening track, “Taj Yo'self” on TAJ’s “The Astral Journey” EP. Released under local independent record label, Darker Than Wax, the album will officially be released on 30th January 2015.

So what is it exactly that we've been missing? This bitchin brew that was concocted in the studio for almost a year – that features poignant, illustrious pieces which evidently highlight their harmonious unity and talent.

Along with Audrey Tengkey on keys, and JR Teo on drums, local cats of TAJ band is the answer to his question – bringing forth an exciting new venture, a great contribution to Singapore’s contemporary jazz scene.

TAJ’s appeal lies in their creative approach to production and musicianship, unlocking a wide, cross generation appeal, especially among the youths. The Astral Journey is a cross pollination of beats, psychedelia, post-rock, breaks, and everything it takes to please the discerning ears of contemporary jazz musician and listener alike.

“Old Town” is funky wah-wah number, with delicate keys and tight drumming which develops to a breakdown of mellow and psychedelic lead synth, with a fuzzy bass line. “7 DB” is a neutralising post-rock number of dreamy breaks, while “The Astral Journey” is the most “organic” track of the EP - a sexy, stripped down Blue Note number, muddled with an R&B influence that could easily use some vocal company.

“You don't got to worry bout a thing...” Kaye, co-founder of Darker Than Wax, guest croons on the vocoder – a catchy yet calm assurance that this finish is only the beginning. Co-founders Kaye and Funk Bast*rd's production outfit Cosa Nostra's refix of Daydream takes on a 4- to-the-floor house-disco approach, a distinctive sound that is testament to DTW's fledgling roots. Rounding off this Ep is a smooth beatdown remix by our artist Jaël, a multi-faceted musician from Holland, who lays a Dilla-esque vibe on 'TAJ yo self'.

The Gradients project was created to blend different creative platforms. Our philosophy is that nothing in life is black or white, but a gradient. We explore this concept through various intersections and collaborations between mediums including (not limited to) visual art, design, dance, film, music, architecture, food, computer science, and more.

The most recent Gradients Project that NY-based artist Kathy Lee (aka Yaeji) spearheaded has been the Gradients Mix series--a collection of 30 minute mixes that aurally translate a gradient of 2 colors. She has also been hosting Live Gradients shows in New York where each musical performer is assigned a color to interpret through their set. 

"'Hue' was an audio-visual study for me. When I first decided to challenge myself and make multiple tracks that could sit under one theme to be an EP or album, I was stuck with the preconceived idea that it has to hold one consistent sound. That very quickly became limiting for me, so I decided to think of the songs as colors instead, flowing from one to the other like a gradient, to inspire my production. That is why my tracks are each named a color and they all connect to become one, long gradient."

Once again, the Melbourne-based quintet have managed to up the ante with their latest single ‘Tempted’.‘Tempted’ simmers with a potent tension unleashed through daring vocals, searing sax hits and frenetic percussion work, all held down by luscious chords and a tighter-than-tight bassline. This is the work of a band at their creative peak. Despite coming in at under four minutes the track manages to meander effortlessly through a breadth of emotions, moods and sonic landscapes.


As the band prepare to embark on an EU tour, ahead of launching their most accomplished and promising body of work to date, their progress in just a few short years hits home. From our first encounters at one of the earliest gigs in a cosy Melbourne basement with a handful of people in attendance, to selling out some of the city’s most prominent music venues, 30/70 have undeniably blossomed, but their journey is far from over. ‘Tempted’ seems aptly named for a teaser single that draws you in and leaves you wanting more from a hotly anticipated album. It was love at first sight for us - are you tempted?

Zanshin is a versatile beast, a swiss army knife of electronic music. His influences are as out-of-space and farfetched as they are near-field and heartfelt. Like a painter in a white room he extends his arms to the fullest to paint what's left in a musical landscape of his own, using all available colours and brushes, leaving the listener with a fully grown universe of experience. As much as he enjoys banging out frenetic and frantic beat structures capable of blowing any rock formation to bits and pieces, he relishes the lush and lascivious green fields of thick synthesized ambiences.

Exploring Zanshin will leave you with traces of any kind of broken step leading to classic electro flirting with abstract jazz and avantgarde. Bewildering field recordings mingling with heavy weight bass champions and there may always be a narrative voice lurking around the corner, singing a lullaby of sorts. This is music that spreads from sweaty club floors to lonely rides on the night train with ease, a fractured panorama of emotional complexity. A fascination with all kinds of structures in sounds, surprising twists and turns and epic moments are omnipresent and tantamount to a kind of credo. And if you ask himself, he might tell you a weird tale about an apprentice and a witch.

Zanshin is an idea, more a concept than a name, meaning "the heart that remains". As its roots are found in asian martial arts, it is hinting at a certain kind of vigilance and alertness, ready to react in any given situation. Something for your mind, body and soul.
