Hometown has many urban legends and cryptids. One of these creatures, the Lakeman, is said to fulfill the hopes and dreams of anyone who throws a coin into the lake. Ever since Rudy fell ill, Noelle has tried this on multiple occasions. Most of the coins in the lake likely belong to her at this point. She was willing to try anything for her father, even hopelessly chasing myths. On the night of the Autumn Festival, Rudy takes a sharp turn for the worse. This moment of desperation causes Noelle to open a Dark Fountain, her final bid at subverting his fate.

Those coins in the depths, filled with the hopes and dreams of her and numerous other Lightners, became Dirge. Embodying the Lakeman cryptid, Dirge sets out to fulfill the wishes that gave him life, even if it's in his own twisted way. With the power to conjure fantasies out of thin air, he turns the Dark World into a sick game to occupy the heroes indefinitely. He will grant their requests, but only if they continue playing his games. He'll stop at nothing to ensure the festival never ends.

Frozee keeps the dark fountain mostly because it brings in "customers" to his end of the dark world. when performing and just out and about, he puts on a happy go lucky demeanor, when in reality its mostly just, lucky. he does it for the money and will rig games from time to time to ensure he gets that sweet sweet cash. originally it was just greed, but now with the dark fountain, he's hoping to get in contact with the knight and pay him to create more dark worlds for him to make more establishments at
