This is another tune I worked on last week when I was kidnapped, er, when I collaborated with Josh and his band of maniacal musicians.    These guys GIT R DUN I tell you . This one evolved lots just in the few days we worked it up.

Dinner Table Instrumental (6) Vol.1 - GoolZan

One of my goals with this years Xmas album is to make use of some aliases I haven't used in a while. The Twisted Kerchiefs- the alias I use for Jazz productions- is one of my most underutilised, basically only ever appearing on xmas albums. And that's a shame, because I really like jazz.

Unfortunately, jazz is very hard to write, both in general and especially in a program that isn't really designed for it. MUSIC™ 2000 does have a range of acoustic instruments, but a lot of them sound, to me, like synthesized reproductions of them rather then the real thing, or just sound a bit naff and come across as very "fake" sounding when played at the wrong octaves- even moreso then static one-shots of acoustic instruments usually do. On top of that, the range of acoustic instruments isn't really all that wide- sticking to just in-program assets, its very difficult to really get some good jazz going. Hence, this song uses a lot of external samples; a majority of the percussion instruments, almost all the pianos, and the upright bass samples are externally sourced.

I have to say, though, I am extremely happy with the result- it might be my favourite Twisted Kerchiefs production I've yet done. My initial goal was to do something that was pure jazz ensemble- piano, upright, brush drums, maybe some horns and woodwinds for spice and some rhodes for flavour. That went out the window quite quick when I found even my external library lacking in a few regards- I'm shocked that I don't currently have many good Rhodes one-shots, and will have to fix that- so I leaned into making it a sort of blend of jazz ensemble elements and synthesizers. And a little "sampler" action by way of a sampled breakbeat in one of the sections, hi-passed and distorted to give it some grit whilst taking the "heaviness" out of it. The song was also a good excuse to play around with M2K's Note Repeat function- effectively a tool that allows you greater control over "when" a note plays outside the strict 16-quaver bar system. As the name suggests, its primarily function is to allow you to cue a note on the same "slot" multiple times- usually to fascillitate drum rolls/fills- but you can use it to add swing to songs or, crucially, to play notes in tighter and faster formations and outside the strict 4/4 timesignature the program is hard-locked to. Very handy for jazz, as you can imagine. 

The tone's a bit melancholy to me, but it kind of works; makes me think of a cold December night somewhere in the country, or maybe the suburbs, cozying up to any source of warmth you can and enjoying a hot tipple of your choice whilst you contemplate... whatever it is you choose to contemplate. That's the sort of vibe I was trying to impart, anyway- another goal of this xmas album is to try and have all the songs reflect Christmas, Winter, or related things- I had a habit of straying from the theme more often then not on past xmas albums. Speaking of, with regards to the title; a Smoking Bishop is a form of Mulled Wine that was apparently very popular in Victorian Britain, but has long since fallen out of favour and into obscurity. I think most people probably only know it from Dickens' A Christmas Carol. It sounds nice enough, and I would quite like to try one, but I think I'm more interested in trying a Smoking Beadle- made using the same spice and herb mix I presume, but using Ginger Wine as the base and adding raisins into the mix. I love Ginger Wine, so that sounds Class™.

I am retired and have taken up music again (after 60 years since I last played the classical piano)for my pleasure. It is great to redo the old classics with the modern sounds and electronic instruments of today. I

Presonus studio 4 software, a size midi keyboard and the Kross workstation Keyboard.
I am so grateful for the support, encouragement and feedback from the  sound cloud community.
