Coldcut - 70 minutes of madness

You might find that the piano playing at the beginning seems a little out of tune - that’s because I’m
not using the standard western scale known as equal temperament. I’ve actually tuned the piano in
line with the alp horn, the national musical instrument of Switzerland. It’s a really long (like, several
metre-long) horn with no holes in the sides so it actually plays in a natural harmonic overtone series,
so I think it gives the piano a beautiful clear resonance as well as (to western ears) a sort of gentle
wooziness. The rhythmic elements of the track are inspired pretty much directly by the original, just
translated into a quicker tempo with some added sound design. I’m really interested to hear what

people think!

The audiobook version of "P is for Pterodactyl" is read by the book's co-author Raj Haldar (better known as Lushlife), alongside fellow musician, Kianna Alarid of Omaha indie-pop group, "Tilly and the Wall" (whose band name incidentally comes from a classic children's book title by Leo Lionni.)
 
The bubbly narration is sure to help young readers along as they sound out the peculiar pronunciations in this book, while kids might already be familiar with Alarid's voice - her band's 2009 performance on Sesame Street currently has over 33 million views on YouTube.
 
This audio supplement also features music from across Lushlife's catalog, with his technicolor hip-hop production fitting surprisingly well as a backdrop to the book's zany, far-reaching universe.

P is for Pterodactyl - Audiobook

Solid Steel in association with Serato (31st August) 3 years ago Solid Steel DJs Cheeba, Moneyshot and Food had the idea of collaborating on a version of the Beastie Boys‘ ‘Paul’s Boutique’ album made entirely from the original sample sources, shortly after Moneyshot aired his mix of their ‘Check Your Head’ album in the same way. 

Finally the result is here, titled ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ - each of them have taken a third of the album to work on and combined their efforts into a mix that will make you hear it in a new way. Aside from the original sample sources they’ve included commentary from the Beasties, vintage interviews, demo versions and much more.

The mix was over half way completed when they heard the tragic news of MCA‘s death in May so the impetus to finish it was instantly doubled and new meaning given to the project. It goes without saying that this is also a tribute to Adam Yauch and the legacy he left behind and we hope it will be embraced by Beastie fans around the globe.

Following up on his label debut Omen Rising, Sam KDC returns to HORO with Mutiny in Monochrome, a devastating release of four techno subversions and genre shattering productions which have come to define the sound of the UK-born, Spain-based artist. For over a decade, KDC has been traversing the sound spectrum with crushing breakbeats, blackened atmospheres and floor destroying electronics. The tracks on Mutiny were recorded while confined to his remote studio during the pandemic and they are seething with bleak, malicious undertones which capture the moment perfectly. 

To mark this excellent release, today we present a Q&A with the artist about the release, the pandemic and more, as well as a special edition mix which is a powerful accompaniment to that artist’s brvtal, layered sound.
