Disquiet Junto Project 0488: Reverse Delay
Assignment: Do something you’ve been putting off.
Since switching to bitwig a few months ago I have been enjoying  being creative within its environment but I haven’t managed to finish anything and post it on line until now.
This track uses several shift register sequences in Bitwig’s grid. It also chops in non verbal speech sounds using HY euclidian sequencer gate.

This project is the first of three that are being done over the course of as many months in collaboration with the 2021 Musikfestival Bern, which will be held in Switzerland from September 1 through 5 under the motto “schwärme” (“swarm”). 
There is just one step for this week’s project: Compose the sound of a single imaginary insect. The duration of the recording should be 20 seconds.

Created as part of the disquiet Junto series of weekly musical projects .Construct a track using a kit of samples supplied by Daniel Diaz all playing in the key of C.
I think I used about 6 of the 10 samples and went for small slithers of many of the sound to get drone textures. I re-chopped up the piano to get a nice ambient loop. It all ends in a bit of delay time wobble. Mixed and arranged in Bitwig

Slight Angels vs Soul [disquiet0508]
Early Christian chronicler, Breslaw of Rothwell, ad1140 considered how many angels would be needed to carry a soul up to heaven, especially that of a sinner whose soul maybe weighed down. For some, it was agreed, the angels would struggle and may in effect ‘slip back many times’.
In several key illuminated bibles produced in the 700’s a ‘cryptic diagram’ known as the Codex of Breslaw was to be found. It was said that it mathematically charts the struggle of the seraphim transporting the soul of Barbaenus to heaven. Unfortunately the best of these bibles, known as the Worcester Gospel, was destroyed in the fire of Raglan Library 1646 which was caused by Parliamentarians during the English civil war.
The parable of Barbaenus tells of a serial adulterer who converted to Christianity only a few days before his death. This is a tale related in several books of the Apocrypha (ancient texts excluded from the official Holy Bible.) Breslaw calculated that 7,823 angles were required.

To Record a new piece of music based on your consideration of freezing (and thawing). I clearly went with the thawing.
The two panned high synth parts recoded using norns ‘fall’ program. Detuning delay added in bitwig. Drone parts using one of the norns drone apps (can’t recall which one).

It’s all luxury apartments now, developers adding some fake warehouse touches, like a bit of rusting crane hoist, to disguise the unsettling past. Unexplained noises seeping through fissures, toyparts or broken clay figures turning up in odd places. The clip of youtube from a 70’s documentary patient Clara saying how the drugs trolley had a squeaky wheel, how they dreaded the dolling out of arbitrary punishment and reward. The last memory of Sally, who crouched wet and shivering beside her bed, she had broken a window the night before and knew she would not be spared.

The chords are DA#GB to ECGEC with a constant G as the linking note. This chord change happens 6 times. Some drum programming and a faint melody using the above notes were also added. Using Bitwig micro pitch I also morphed the tuning between standard and a preset called Yang-chin 7 dulcimer.

This week you’ll be adding music to a pre-existing track, which you will source from the previous week’s Junto project (disquiet.com/0525). Note that you aren’t creating a duet — you’re creating the second third of what will eventually be a trio. 
This track adds a quintet of loosely time guitar parts to Moray Newlands track Roughly in C.

Created as part of Disquiet Junto weekly project 0529:  to make a piece of music that engages with the number 23.
This track has bars of 23 beats, it is 23 bars long.
I doubt the ear can discern the 23beat bar -but the rhythm is 123&12&12&123&12&12&123
The track has 3 drum tracks – done in bitwig. A Spitfire Audio piano, cello and violin plus acoustic drone recording of a metal sheet and a bit crushed megaphone announcement (in Japanese).The metal sheet friction drone is gate sequenced to an Euclidian patter on a 23 beat cycle.
The scale for the piano and strings is E+ F+ A B C+
Think it would make good closing credits music for a psychological thriller where a serial killer feasts on minor celebrities and influencers. The agent assigned to the case of course has his demons and struggles with his own autism -only to discover no one else has empathy for the victims either. It could be called LIKES!

National Art Library Mumbles [disquiet0127-libraryshhh]
Recording created for Disquiet Junto music challenge based on field recording of a library and inspired by Zoè Benoit’s “bibliobeep” project.
The first minute. Recorded at the National Art Library, London , housed in the V&A. I found it almost completely bleep free. Even the computers didn't bleep, and i was browsing the catalogue as I recorded this.... There is a slight odd quality to the sound  due to mini disc being in a jiffy bag, maybe... although the mic was poking out the top. it was a sunny day, windows open, and children were playing in the garden below. No effects or tampering. Some nice muffley footsteps and door noises. Certainly not a crisp recording.
The second minute. The main recording continues but with added extras. Some textured loops of the library ambience- including a very quiet bleep from a readers watch, I think. a cough gets played into the mix too. I added the sound of flicking through the pages of a book (with delay) and a light organ drone which starts to act as a kind of carrier signal. I am most pleased with the book flicking effect.

A broken Walkman's nostalgia for the Hitachi kitchen tape [diquiet0181 instrumentaldream]

this track is an entry to disquiet Junto Project 0181- to create the aural content of an instrument dreaming.
The shagged out walkman was found in a skip and taken back to my sanctuary for dysfunctional audio equipment. And lovingly restored? No, I just use ot as it is . There she met and bonded with a tape which was a long term resident in an old radio/ tape player that lived in our kitchens throughout most of the 90s. Caked in fry-up grease it never erased anything.... simply silted up with layers of noise. I would constantly record snippets, opera, interviews,etc I thought would add to the melange.
ten samples looping in the popular style....delay, reverb, crackle no beat.

The intervals are quite simple - not eerie or all that exotic (as mzero says).... but the sound is big and ageless. Perhaps too insistant to be ambient, ptolmeic, all set in place with a the sure hand of a watchmaker god.


My method was to use the pitches starting with the root note b ( B2 -123.47, E3-164.81, B3 -246.94, F#4-369.99, D#5-622.25, B5-987.77) and to have each note (drone) pulse/throb in keeping with the same ratios(1,4/3,2,3,5,8).
I realised this twice. Once in protools using the organ plug in and a amplitude filter tied to the tempo.  The organ also had its own pulsing wheel thing going on which I hadn't quite factored for. The organ sound was a bit gritty/ dirty.
I also had a go at realising the whole thing in pure data- which was made surprisingly easy by finding the patch tremtonett3:dimittripaile2011 - all the difficult stuff was done I added 3 more channels and changed a few values. this gave a cleaner, purer realisation.

The two versions  (12 tracks as I did one planet at a time) were all mixed and merged. with an overall arc of clean -> dirty -> clean but wobbly. A wide stereo that narrows down
A subtle touch of comp and rev  to keep it smooth.

Ghosts of Sine and Vine [disquiet0326]

Several tracks of staked warbling sine waves produced in pure data. These use mutiple sine waves with the shifting volumes to give a warbling effect. Some of the bassier tracks had a side chained beat pumping them using an expander gate- this was in time with the end-of-vinyl click sample. some other added crackle  and click samples . Compiled in pro tools. Only two of the drone tracks had delay/reverb the rest of the tracks are dry.

Ghost Of Sine And Vine

Carla Stores is on the outskirts of NE London, accessed by one of the last stops on the Makebelieve line. It  has an eclectic range of stock and bizarre pricing. It is mainly staffed by out of work, underage actors while several footmen constantly pace the panel wood reception in a surprisingly rhythmic way. The air conditioning sounds like crepe paper being shaken and the sound of the key strokes  of electric tills with old style typewriter bells bears no relation to the complete lack of customers.

Penguins, Sweets, Fish,  Trousers -[disquiet0038 asrealasitgets2]

The spike organ or nail chello (sic) is thought to originate from an early middle Europe monastic sect, the Iscariotians. They may have used the instrument to accompany their lengthy rituals contemplating the pain of the crucifixion.  

The Iscariotians are said to have been wiped out by returning crusaders at the behest of emperor Leopold III. Other commentators have suggested that the whole story may have been a constructed  alibi for the defeated crusaders plunder and desecration of the brewery of ..Santa Quaffa...


A possible surviving 'chello' object, made from of lignum vitae and iron, resides in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen. Its interpretation is not without controversy with some critics asserting the object is nothing more than a kind of agricultural implement, though this does not explain its cruciform shape and carved decoration.

In 1972 the scholar . Roland de Févin was granted permission to investigate the Rouen Chello, explore its sound making capabilities and make recordings. his theory was that the instrument was to be played by a rosined bow.  Unfortunately de Févin's playing and handling resulted in two of the nails fracturing and so the investigation was terminated after only one day. The single recording de Févin made was never released but it was played to audiences on an European lecture tour he conducted shortly before his death in 1974. 

It has been subsequently alleged that de Févin's  investigation  coincided with the great fire at  Nantes cathedral. This lead to several occultist conspiracy theories, most notably retold in the pulp fiction novel Blood Nail-(Brownie Dane,1975) much of the plot was lifted for the Italian soft core film Sistero Orgasma (1977) where the action was switched away from a monastery to a scantily clad convent.(citation needed) 

On the film soundtrack, the sounds of the Chello were replicated by experimental electronic synthesiser the achoirorium- itself the  subject of intrigue- as its extremely high operating voltages caused the death of its creator  Luigi soon after the recording session.


This recording was made in 1980 by UK avant geographer Forster Iberix who attended several of de Févin's lectures.  He set about building a replica device and making reconstructions of the Iscariotarian mass based on a column of scribbled numbers  which appear reverso  in one of Leonardo da Vinci's codex's (Coded notebooks). The recording was released on an untitled flexi disk issued by cult French label sordide sentimental -who now deny any knowledge of its existence. It does not appear on their official discography.  Improbably- Haringey local studies library, London, has a copy in their archive. The library does not provide any method of playback for the flexidisc and items from the archive cannot be withdrawn -so some subterfuge was involved in me getting this track taped. Whilst the disk was in my possession an inexplicable number of minor disasters befell me -so I can assure you I hurriedly returned it.

Mostly created in march 2020 as part of Steve Oath's project one Lines forum, LCHP#1  https://llllllll.co/t/lchp-1-the-beginning-open-deadline/28933/2 .  
In march I posted on the forum about my submission, that I was nearly finished!   From that point  the Covid thing took over everyones plans. Jan 2021 I have found some motivation to go back to my pile of unfinshed stuff. Had real problems mixing but need to get is out there.
