This project is the first of three that are being done over the course of as many months in collaboration with the 2021 Musikfestival Bern, which will be held in Switzerland from September 1 through 5 under the motto “schwärme” (“swarm”). 
There is just one step for this week’s project: Compose the sound of a single imaginary insect. The duration of the recording should be 20 seconds.

Created as part of the disquiet Junto series of weekly musical projects .Construct a track using a kit of samples supplied by Daniel Diaz all playing in the key of C.
I think I used about 6 of the 10 samples and went for small slithers of many of the sound to get drone textures. I re-chopped up the piano to get a nice ambient loop. It all ends in a bit of delay time wobble. Mixed and arranged in Bitwig

Slight Angels vs Soul [disquiet0508]
Early Christian chronicler, Breslaw of Rothwell, ad1140 considered how many angels would be needed to carry a soul up to heaven, especially that of a sinner whose soul maybe weighed down. For some, it was agreed, the angels would struggle and may in effect ‘slip back many times’.
In several key illuminated bibles produced in the 700’s a ‘cryptic diagram’ known as the Codex of Breslaw was to be found. It was said that it mathematically charts the struggle of the seraphim transporting the soul of Barbaenus to heaven. Unfortunately the best of these bibles, known as the Worcester Gospel, was destroyed in the fire of Raglan Library 1646 which was caused by Parliamentarians during the English civil war.
The parable of Barbaenus tells of a serial adulterer who converted to Christianity only a few days before his death. This is a tale related in several books of the Apocrypha (ancient texts excluded from the official Holy Bible.) Breslaw calculated that 7,823 angles were required.

The two panned high synth parts recoded using norns ‘fall’ program. Detuning delay added in bitwig. Drone parts using one of the norns drone apps (can’t recall which one).

It’s all luxury apartments now, developers adding some fake warehouse touches, like a bit of rusting crane hoist, to disguise the unsettling past. Unexplained noises seeping through fissures, toyparts or broken clay figures turning up in odd places. The clip of youtube from a 70’s documentary patient Clara saying how the drugs trolley had a squeaky wheel, how they dreaded the dolling out of arbitrary punishment and reward. The last memory of Sally, who crouched wet and shivering beside her bed, she had broken a window the night before and knew she would not be spared.

The chords are DA#GB to ECGEC with a constant G as the linking note. This chord change happens 6 times. Some drum programming and a faint melody using the above notes were also added. Using Bitwig micro pitch I also morphed the tuning between standard and a preset called Yang-chin 7 dulcimer.

Created as part of Disquiet Junto weekly project 0529:  to make a piece of music that engages with the number 23.
This track has bars of 23 beats, it is 23 bars long.
I doubt the ear can discern the 23beat bar -but the rhythm is 123&12&12&123&12&12&123
The track has 3 drum tracks – done in bitwig. A Spitfire Audio piano, cello and violin plus acoustic drone recording of a metal sheet and a bit crushed megaphone announcement (in Japanese).The metal sheet friction drone is gate sequenced to an Euclidian patter on a 23 beat cycle.
The scale for the piano and strings is E+ F+ A B C+
Think it would make good closing credits music for a psychological thriller where a serial killer feasts on minor celebrities and influencers. The agent assigned to the case of course has his demons and struggles with his own autism -only to discover no one else has empathy for the victims either. It could be called LIKES!

An entry to the 102nd disquiet junto weekly project-  where contributors are given 4 days to create a short piece based on a unique set of rules, or guidelines. this week: Record a one-minute track of loop-able background music that can be described as glistening, reflective, and gentle.
Used some pure data patches for yule log drones and holly warbles . Guitar in dmin for some shagged reindeer blues. Then added sleigh bell sample for real Christmas joy. Layered lots of sherry trifle tracks with delays and revb sprinkled about like icing sugar. Whole mix was pushed through filter gate and made to put a penny in the old mans hat. Serve with real cream or brandy butter.

A broken Walkman's nostalgia for the Hitachi kitchen tape [diquiet0181 instrumentaldream]

this track is an entry to disquiet Junto Project 0181- to create the aural content of an instrument dreaming.
The shagged out walkman was found in a skip and taken back to my sanctuary for dysfunctional audio equipment. And lovingly restored? No, I just use ot as it is . There she met and bonded with a tape which was a long term resident in an old radio/ tape player that lived in our kitchens throughout most of the 90s. Caked in fry-up grease it never erased anything.... simply silted up with layers of noise. I would constantly record snippets, opera, interviews,etc I thought would add to the melange.
ten samples looping in the popular style....delay, reverb, crackle no beat.

this track is an entry to disquiet Junto Project 0189 - to create a dense stack of attack-free tonal material from one audio source.
I used tuning forks over guitar pick up  ( yes i did this once before) through eq pedal and line 6 looper. Each improvised take was recored to minidisc...and then into computer and layered up 6 times...or so.... until I liked it  and hit the right concentration of tones.

The intervals are quite simple - not eerie or all that exotic (as mzero says).... but the sound is big and ageless. Perhaps too insistant to be ambient, ptolmeic, all set in place with a the sure hand of a watchmaker god.


My method was to use the pitches starting with the root note b ( B2 -123.47, E3-164.81, B3 -246.94, F#4-369.99, D#5-622.25, B5-987.77) and to have each note (drone) pulse/throb in keeping with the same ratios(1,4/3,2,3,5,8).
I realised this twice. Once in protools using the organ plug in and a amplitude filter tied to the tempo.  The organ also had its own pulsing wheel thing going on which I hadn't quite factored for. The organ sound was a bit gritty/ dirty.
I also had a go at realising the whole thing in pure data- which was made surprisingly easy by finding the patch tremtonett3:dimittripaile2011 - all the difficult stuff was done I added 3 more channels and changed a few values. this gave a cleaner, purer realisation.

The two versions  (12 tracks as I did one planet at a time) were all mixed and merged. with an overall arc of clean -> dirty -> clean but wobbly. A wide stereo that narrows down
A subtle touch of comp and rev  to keep it smooth.

Ghosts of Sine and Vine [disquiet0326]

Several tracks of staked warbling sine waves produced in pure data. These use mutiple sine waves with the shifting volumes to give a warbling effect. Some of the bassier tracks had a side chained beat pumping them using an expander gate- this was in time with the end-of-vinyl click sample. some other added crackle  and click samples . Compiled in pro tools. Only two of the drone tracks had delay/reverb the rest of the tracks are dry.

Ghost Of Sine And Vine

Method:
Various short percussion  sessions were recorded with my phone. This uses .amr files. “Adaptive Multi-Rate is a compression technology used for encoding audio files that are primarily speech based.” - these are more compressed than James Corden’s odour eaters.
Files were downloaded onto my computer. A rogue sound file of a radio interview got into the batch so I thought I’d use it too.  The music loops were edited 5.5 secs and 2.75 secs  so that they would synchronize. 
I chose a 5 sec loop- the one that goes “bing bang bong, bing bang bong” and made 22 copies of it using various configurations of a plug in called dfx geometer in wavelab lite. Geometer is a visually oriented waveform geometry plugin. It works by generating some "points" or "landmarks" on the waveform, moving them around and messing them up, and then reassembling the wave from the points. http://destroyfx.smartelectronix.com/ 
The idea was that each version would decrease in quality , the loop getting more and more mangled as the piece progresses.
A trio of faster banging loops were kept untreated.

The last three occurrences of the vocal loop each had different effects applied, to it in pro Tools le. These were  Ampeg guitar amp, funk logic masterizer, and pro tools shittest ever plug in , Cosmonaut Voice.
Some other audio destructions I made while experimenting are scattered through the piece at low volume. An extra low quality sample comes in during the fade out.

I did more or less keep to the guidelines, but  as all files were recorded on my phone the contrast of high quality and decayed sounds is not so evident- though there is a sense of the track slowly sliding into no-fi noise.

A companion track to Slip Away..representing the inner state of the insomniac where electrical hum, distant voices,next doors radio etc become amplified and tortuous. Used music box, tuning fork, spring drone,whirling oran plug in,shipping etc

Carla Stores is on the outskirts of NE London, accessed by one of the last stops on the Makebelieve line. It  has an eclectic range of stock and bizarre pricing. It is mainly staffed by out of work, underage actors while several footmen constantly pace the panel wood reception in a surprisingly rhythmic way. The air conditioning sounds like crepe paper being shaken and the sound of the key strokes  of electric tills with old style typewriter bells bears no relation to the complete lack of customers.

Penguins, Sweets, Fish,  Trousers -[disquiet0038 asrealasitgets2]

The spike organ or nail chello (sic) is thought to originate from an early middle Europe monastic sect, the Iscariotians. They may have used the instrument to accompany their lengthy rituals contemplating the pain of the crucifixion.  

The Iscariotians are said to have been wiped out by returning crusaders at the behest of emperor Leopold III. Other commentators have suggested that the whole story may have been a constructed  alibi for the defeated crusaders plunder and desecration of the brewery of ..Santa Quaffa...


A possible surviving 'chello' object, made from of lignum vitae and iron, resides in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen. Its interpretation is not without controversy with some critics asserting the object is nothing more than a kind of agricultural implement, though this does not explain its cruciform shape and carved decoration.

In 1972 the scholar . Roland de Févin was granted permission to investigate the Rouen Chello, explore its sound making capabilities and make recordings. his theory was that the instrument was to be played by a rosined bow.  Unfortunately de Févin's playing and handling resulted in two of the nails fracturing and so the investigation was terminated after only one day. The single recording de Févin made was never released but it was played to audiences on an European lecture tour he conducted shortly before his death in 1974. 

It has been subsequently alleged that de Févin's  investigation  coincided with the great fire at  Nantes cathedral. This lead to several occultist conspiracy theories, most notably retold in the pulp fiction novel Blood Nail-(Brownie Dane,1975) much of the plot was lifted for the Italian soft core film Sistero Orgasma (1977) where the action was switched away from a monastery to a scantily clad convent.(citation needed) 

On the film soundtrack, the sounds of the Chello were replicated by experimental electronic synthesiser the achoirorium- itself the  subject of intrigue- as its extremely high operating voltages caused the death of its creator  Luigi soon after the recording session.


This recording was made in 1980 by UK avant geographer Forster Iberix who attended several of de Févin's lectures.  He set about building a replica device and making reconstructions of the Iscariotarian mass based on a column of scribbled numbers  which appear reverso  in one of Leonardo da Vinci's codex's (Coded notebooks). The recording was released on an untitled flexi disk issued by cult French label sordide sentimental -who now deny any knowledge of its existence. It does not appear on their official discography.  Improbably- Haringey local studies library, London, has a copy in their archive. The library does not provide any method of playback for the flexidisc and items from the archive cannot be withdrawn -so some subterfuge was involved in me getting this track taped. Whilst the disk was in my possession an inexplicable number of minor disasters befell me -so I can assure you I hurriedly returned it.

This track is an entry to the weekly disquiet Junto project.  This week the task was to add an instrumental part to a duet (piano and viola) making it into a trio. As always with disquiet projects there are just 4 days to get this done.

I have added a trio of sparse prepared e. guitar parts played through cry baby and delay.  They were meant to add up to a  sort of single performance although  I probably left too many overlaps in for this to be true . Lots of scrapes and objects on strings, the rattly drone is  ebow on slack e string. (Right Now, I wish there was less delay and the guitar had a dryer sound). I kept it pretty live but ducked out a couple of accidental clonks and mixed the volumes up and down like you do. I did play this for the  whole piece but this excerpt is about the right length, more focused. The source audio for this track is part three of the Kenneth Kirschner album June 5, 2012, which features Kirschner on piano and Tawnya Popoff on viola. The album was released in September 2012 on the shskh.com netlabel, where it is available for free download. It is sort of serious classical ambient, a bit dry and academic, but mostly good stuff- if you’re into that sort of thing.

Disquiet Junto Project 0401: Noise Pacing

This recording a contribution to one of the weekly  Disquiet junto projects open to all. The Assignment: Use background noise as a beat, as a rhythm. The German word “rauschen” is noise in the sense of white noise, waterfall noise, background noise, static.

Two white noisey field recordings were merged- one the sea at Embleton beach, Northumbria (UK) and one the mumbling, reverby ambience of the Guggenheim museum New York. A drum program sidechained into an expander gate produced the white noise beat over the top of the ambient wash. To this I added two tracks of a pure data patch where white noise was narrowly bandpassed to give randomised semi pitched air sounds. These had a delay rhythm added to them. Some reverb was added, a lot of eq-ing. compression and struggling to get a perfect mix of it all.

Audible Op art
This recording a contribution to one of the weekly  Disquiet Junto projects open to all. The Assignment:  What does the sonic equivalent of Op Art sound like?

Starts with  shepherd tone made with guitar parts stacked- done by me but from the archive. The two sequenced pairs slipping out of sync was done in VCV rack. one track running at 98bpm one at 96 with cascading 16th notes. There are a couple of pattern changes, again these are loose and  unsynchronised. The L and Right drum clatter are also working at slightly different speeds for a phased effect. Hard panning and switching /crossing tracks also used. I added some meaningless phonemes in a repeating pattern at the end for the phantom words illusion. To me it sounds like 'peck my worm'
All roughly mixed in pro-tools.

Sines and Wonders [Disquiet412]

The chord is Asus4 each note (AEADE based on the open position guitar chord) is played by a swapping arrangement of the following instruments:
-ebowed electric guitar
-tuning fork
-a patch on the digital Skulpt synth
-Protools db-33 organ plug in.
The tuning forks have a lot of delay added to make a more continuous drone.

The whole mix is put through a filter gate pulsing the amplitude. The depth of this increases as the track progresses. The speed of the pulsing also ramps up from around 80 to 122bpm.. 
I tried for a subtle shifting of textures within a full wall of sound, while mixing I did struggle to find and deal with a lot of the peaking frequencies.

Breathe into the Machine [disquiet0430]

The assignment for this project was to record the second third of a potential trio. This carries on from last weeks project to start off the trio with a solo performance.
I have added an accompanying background to  Ethan Hein's Harmonica Meditation.

This uses a self made instrument with a spring and several clock bells on stems which I bowed. These sounds were fed through a looper and a freeze pedal.
My thinking was the harmonica was the breath and I was adding the workings of the machine, possibly medical, but perhaps Wellsian science fiction device. The machine is benign but cant help suffocating the breath at times,  unsympathetic. In a different way the machine is also magical, mysterious. The breath is defiant in holding on and exerts itself in the exuberant spirit of it's solo.
This week’s Disquiet Junto project is the second in a sequence intended to encourage and reward asynchronous collaboration.

A submission to the disquiet junto project, week 0466.The Assignment: Choose a city (perhaps your own) and share what its sound machine sounds like.
The traffic samples recorded this week under the Archway road ‘suicide’ bridge. Looped and mangled. Wet underpass dub, arterial traffic. Jump in Haringey, crash hard in Islington. The way the air shifts in the wrong ear with the side window open1/8th of an inch. The vowel shape formant of a windswept concourse, the shepard swish of passing tyres. Turf without passion, road safety brutalism without flair. Unsentimental static.
