That shaped and paved your future ways,
That formed the person you would become,
And determined if you did belong.

Today it seems so far away,
The past at best a distant play.
Yet only now is when you need to know,
Find the source from where the rivers flow.

Would it matter if you knew the truth,
Would it feel better if you witnessed your own youth,
And knew the rights and wrongs along the way,
Would you be more at ease with who you are today?

You ask yourself why you feel the way you feel,
Look for incidents to help to make it real,
What was your childhood like, what did you learn,
Was your world a friendly place or did it burn.

And what’s the role that everybody played,
Did they know better or just acted out their fate.
But who to ask for what you yearn to hear,
How to be so brave to overcome the fear.
 
Would it matter if you knew the truth,

You see a boy sitting lonely at his desk,  
You hear desires that could not be expressed,

His gaze remains cautious, not sure where he’s bound,
Searching for connection and looking out for love,
Wanting to be close, like a hand in a glove.

Over there to the left, she stood with nothing to give,
And how could she provide, what she did not receive.
Left with no means for her to meet,
The cautious child’s innocent need.

Over there to the right, he tried all that he could,
Awkward at best, never sure if he should,
Left all alone when looking for clues,
Back in the days when love drowned in bad news.

Then entered the girl and offered embrace,
She walked across and cut through the haze,
Found the child who didn’t know where to turn,
Rescued a soul waiting to love and to learn.

There is no one to blame, no need to hate,
Some can only control and not relate,
They learned to avoid, were too anxious to assure,
So glad for the child, now embraced and secure.

The child in the back is looking around,
A sparkle in his eyes, amazed by what he found,
Grateful for connection and for lasting love,
Feeling embraced, like a hand in a glove.

There’s no guarantees, but it’s never too late,
To keep your heart open, to love and relate,
And to embrace those, on the left and the right,
Who tried their best to shine a light.
