As you might have heard already, we’re quite stoked about our upcoming Dekmantel Records release by Basic Soul Unit. His debut at our label comes in the form of his album “Under The Same Sky”. The Canadian producer, real name Stuart Li, has been dropping quality records via a litany of highly respected imprints like Ostgut Ton, Crème Organization, Mule Electronic and Versatile over the past decade. Hypnotic and deep, but always funky, and very well produced. In this week’s podcast Basic Soul Unit proves he’s not only a stellar producer, but a very skilled DJ with a keen eye for tracks that others don’t pick up. Enjoy a classic ride trough subtile house, some disco, a couple uptempo tracks and of course some music of the upcoming album.

In the first week of September we're heading to the beautiful scenery of Tisno, Croatia, to celebrate the first edition of Dekmantel Selectors. In the run up to the festival, we've launched a new temporary podcast-series where we invite ten of our selectors from the festival to dig deep in their unique collections. The idea behind the mix is to create a Time Document, focusing on a specific period of time with the artist being free in choosing this period. This period could in fact entail anything: a certain decennia, the time he or she fell in love, The Cold War, November ’92 – March ’93, or the rise of Nigerian music. It’s up to the Selectors to choose and tell us a story based on their music collection.

Selectors Podcast 008 comes from an established and respected record dealer based in the UK, who has been the go to guy for rare music for many years now. But if you don’t know Nick The Record, that probably is because he has focused on a DJ-career in Japan for the last decennia’s. It’s in the magical country where he started a series of parties with a Japanese crew called Lifeforce and eventually became the resident DJ. After throwing their first rave party in 1993, their alliance lasted for almost twenty years. Nick: "There was already a strong established club scene in Japan at the time, bringing lots of name DJ’s from the USA. The idea with Lifeforce was to add a little of the UK rave culture to the mix. It was a very grass roots, friends of friends type affair which grew organically. The music we played was mostly house and acid with some disco thrown in too."
 
With his Selectors Time Document, Nick travels back in time and takes us on a typical Lifeforce night trip. Nick: "So this mix actually spans two decades but focusses on a specific time of night. Lifeforce was usually held in a studio or warehouse space and was always an all night party going until six or seven in the morning (except for the outdoor parties that would always go longer). So within this mix, we zone in on the last hour of a typical night like that and the encore tunes. There was always still a good amount of people at the end of the night and they would always demand at least three encores. 

 His typical way of mixing is recognized within this mix. No proper four to the floor mixing, but good records and great vibes is what matters the most. Nick: "After a long night of high tempo dancing to house and disco, I always like to gradually slow it down a little with some slower house, disco and then gradually stop mixing and just play great records. It can be something super soulful, jazzy or trippy. Depending on the feel of the party, it can be something slow, deep and meditative, or something high octane to send the crowd home on a high. It will always be something highly emotive in the end. As a result of all this, there isn’t too much mixing within this mix. Just the first thirty minutes to slow you down and open you up to that early morning vibe."

Mister Saturday Night started in a Manhattan club in early 2009. A few parties in, we forged a new path, turning the Mister into a one-of-a-kind, grassroots experience. We rent a private party space, set up our own soundsystem and bring in our own friendly team to work the door and the bar – to make it feel like home. In 2011 we extended Mister Saturday Night into Mister Sunday, taking over the beloved, tree-specked space at 400 Carroll Street called Gowanus Grove.

On Sunday July 29th, 2012 we celebrated our 100th Mister ever. It’s true. We counted.

This is a recording from that day, from about 6:30pm until 9pm. Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter, the party's founders and residents, played back to back to a whole bunch of happy people. And to top it off, at the end of their set, they arranged a big surprise, a full on performance by Brooklyn Steppers, a Brooklyn high school drum corps and step team. So good.

Co-founder of the <a target="_blank" class="hyperlink" title="ESHU website" href="http://www.eshurecords.com">ESHU</a> label and collective, he wishes to promote the avant-garde sound of Nijmegen: techno in all shapes and form. Mostly influenced by soul, reggae and early 90's hip-hop, he often introduces sample-based drum loops typifying these trends into his own productions. Through many personal projects and collaborations with his fellow <a target="_blank" class="hyperlink" title="ESHU website" href="http://www.eshurecords.com">ESHU</a> members, he also regularly dives into the housier side of the electronic spectrum. <a target="_blank" class="hyperlink" title="Roger Gerressen's Facebook page" href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Roger-Gerressen/202334309783263">Roger Gerressen</a>'s episode is a profound immersion into the deepest techno atmospheres.

E2E: Any particular environment or context you had in mind when recording this mix?

Myles Mac: Elaborating on the theme, I've been living down on the Mornington Peninsula for the last year or so which is home to some of Australia's coolest birdlife, recently prompting me and my girlfriend to go buy some binoculars and join the fray as amateur birdwatchers. Just from my place here, you can often see some pretty funky birds like the brightly coloured Eastern Rosellas and Rainbow Lorikeets, and we also get the odd visit from a cheeky Laughing Kookaburra looking for a quick bath. There's even a family of Wedge-tailed Eagles that circle around above. I'm sure one day they'll discover some pretty cool birds in outer space too, and I think this could be a nice soundtrack for all the interplanetary birdwatchers out there.

E2E: Any new projects you're working on or milestones with MDC? 

Myles Mac: MDC is into its 10th year now which is a bit of a trip! Just hope to continue sharing memorable listening journeys from all over the place but would like to focus a bit more on emerging locals as there are some incredible DJs down here that don't always get the recognition they should.

Will also be collaborating on a few tasty club shows with the Slow Burn crew next year which I'm quite excited about.
