Aus körperlicher Sicht entsteht Schlafwandeln, wenn das Gehirn während des Tiefschlafs nicht vollständig zwischen Schlaf und Wachsein trennt. Teile des Gehirns schlafen weiter, während andere schon aktiv sind – wie ein Körper ohne Bewusstsein. Ursachen sind oft Stress, Übermüdung, genetische Veranlagung oder innere Unruhe.

Doch aus spiritueller Sicht wird Schlafwandeln manchmal als Zeichen dafür gesehen, dass die Seele in der Nacht "wandert", dass sie auf einer tieferen Ebene nach etwas sucht. Der Körper bleibt zurück, gesteuert nur von einem inneren Echo. In manchen Kulturen glaubt man, dass Schlafwandler zwischen den Welten stehen,- nicht ganz hier, nicht ganz dort.

Der Schlafwandler wird so zum Symbol für das Unbewusste, das nach Ausdruck sucht – ein innerer Ruf, der keine Worte kennt, nur Bewegung.
