Psychic Liberation presents “Friendly CSA Compilations Parts 1 & 2”. A compilation in two parts consisting of artists orbiting the PL canon from around the world in an effort to raise funds for Roots Unbound Friendly CSA.

Roots Unbound (RU) is an abolitionist grassroots organization based in Brooklyn offering nature-based programming centered around food justice, therapeutic horticulture and ecological disinvestment to people in the NYC area with a focus on supporting and uplifting people impacted by the carceral system.

Friendly CSA is a cooperative, agricultural initiative that was mobilized to respond to the food apartheid within New York jails and prisons. Roots Unbound sends care packages of harvested produce that are
chosen by incarcerated folks via a newsletter sent out every month, by growing and collaborating with local New York City land stewards. This CSA is provided at no cost to the recipients, funds raised for this CSA will be used towards packaging, postage, printed materials for newsletters, and a P.O. box.

Heavy electronics and electro-acoustic constructions from LA's Mack Chami aka God Is War. Chamis' oblique approach to industrialism stands out from a sea of black and white photocopies of photocopies. It's hyper-colour maximalism which evokes a twisted view and sonification of bro-step America as a timbral partner to INA-GRM's intensive sound studies. A harsh studiousness it turns out to be. Sounds, artwork and titles all coalesce into a release as attitudinal and hormonally imbalanced as you'll hear until the next GIW oil of vitriol is spilled or thrown into your face.

Newly-arrived experimental electronic music duo @un_p debuts on A Flooded Need with a monumental four-track EP that violently bursts upon us like a sonic train, mixing various elements of contemporary electronic music, with the aim of abruptly liquidating all our awareness.
From the very first moment, the sensation that pervades us is like being catapulted into an icy dilapidated environment where ancient statuesque sound masses are corroded by noisy, saturated isolationist atmospheres.
The same acoustic creatures that seem on the verge of encompassing us, are able to whisper as-yet-unknown indecipherable conventions, suggesting the acceptance of the overwhelming power of noise as a remedy to the evil of modernity and a form of relief.
Ensemble Axiom is dynamic stasis. Huge stormy sound clusters meet liquid, bilious silences.
It is shining ruin and cold restoration.
It is digital sculpture and human escapism.

To cope with the emergency COVID-19, 24 / H and the Temple of the Lost Future have created a new global network active on social and political issues with the aim of saving our planet. This is why RSTW was born.

Shackleton’s open-ended musical project Tunes Of Negation featuring Takumi Motokawa, Raphael Meinhart, and a guest appearance from Heather Leigh is back on Cosmo Rhythmatic after its acclaimed debut last year. 

While Shackleton’s output has often attempted to cross all musical borders, the newest manifestation of Tunes of Negation suggests themes of impermanence, rebirth, and transcendence with a fiercer dedication than ever before. In attempting to balance shadow with light, ‘Like The Stars Forever And Ever’ runs from sombre or gentle passages to dissonance through to uplifting finales and the whole range between. 

As always, Shackleton’s music feels ceremonial and narrative, at once commenting and facilitating the journey of all entities engaged in ritual listening. The fragility of life and the awareness of an inevitable end are transcribed musically in all their discordant, fearful, and mournful aspects. However, this does not at all make the album an overtly gloomy, depressing affair. In every track, the music ends up soaring towards a sense of ecstatic dissolution. A representation of a bewildering cosmic love in the transient, mortal nature of all things. A re-assimilation of energy towards new forms. 

There are no attempts to solve ultimate mysteries though, rather celebrate mystery in all its power, beauty, and contradictions. Shackleton’s ever-masterful embroidery of tonal and atonal percussions, of acoustic and electronic organs, of electronic sound design and physical ambiance, is—as always in his style—organized in compositions in which hypnotic repetition is the basis for evolution and ultimate change. The feast of life, death, and rebirth. Of fluctuation between multiple states of being and non-being. Like the stars, forever and ever.

Thirteen alto saxophones, performed by the 13 members of the student-collective Kug-Sax-Sippia in Graz, Austria, occupy the entire field of “Odd Music,” the first track on Julien Malaussena’s album Articulated Sound Energy. They operate like a single instrument—or organism—delivering serial, droning noir. The Paris-based composer has engaged deeply with the continental academic scene, studying composition and orchestration with various eminent teachers, including composer Jean Luc Hervé; but this album illustrates those ideas being worked on by a new generation of classical composers. Influenced by the organic sensuality of Chaya Czernowin and the unique points of musical departure explored by composer Pierluigi Billone, Malaussena’s scores proceed from the artist’s concept behind the title: the event of a physical, non-musical sound, which then gets articulated, or elaborated upon. This album contains recordings of three concerts, three distinct paths that this approach can take. On “Concerning articulated sound energy,” the kinetic philosophy results in an almost incomprehensible din far from standard chamber fare: sounds of stretched out balloons, lips puckering, and great, big wobblings. Indeed, rather than strict instrumentation, Malaussena’s compositions allow for chance, following in the footsteps of modern epistemes such as the Darmstadt School, while breaking new ground.

Artist Bio:
Julien Malaussena considers his compositional prism to be sound energy–not timbre nor time; not dynamics, pitch, nor the sound space, but rather this element straddling all of these, one less palpable, less quantifiable. By setting up a range of entities embodying different stages of such energy, he focuses on the direction–or absence of direction– inherent in each entity. With this conception of directionality, he articulates these entities and the relations amongst them in a musical form, in which entities interact either in a dialectical structure of tension and release, or in a system generated by subtle gradations of tension. His recent work has been an inquiry into the relationship between form (this dialectic) and material (the articulated sound entities).

He was already played by ensembles like Ensemble Nikel, Ensemble 2E2M, Court-Circuit, Xasax, les Cris de Paris, Ensemble l'imaginaire, Ensemble Fractales, le Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble, Kug-sax-sippia, Ecce ensemble, Les solistes du Balcon, ensemble interface, ensemble Surplus, Duo XAMP (microtonal accordions),20 degrés dans le noir, Schallfeld, Barcelona Modern Ensemble, Wet ink, Ensemble Nemø, Tak ensemble, Ensemble S201 performed in France, Israel, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, Russia, Austria, Brazil, USA, Turkey, mexico, Italie, Japan and Spain.
