Haramik is a Yerevan-based queer activist and DJ. After recognizing the dire need for queer nights and safe-spaces in their city, and inspired by “Paris is Burning”, they founded “Princess Dia- ries” - the first openly queer electronic music event in Yerevan. Their sets are a reflection of their love and passion for music, transmuted so- cially as they create hyper-groovy beats that leave you moving non-stop in the midst of dim strobes, thumping beats, and a hazy and dream- like atmosphere.

Iranian artists AIDA and Nesa Azadikhah have announced a not-for-profit compilation Woman, Life, Freedom to draw attention to the plight of women in their home country, with female Iranian artists recording 12 original tracks for its release.

Nesa Azadikhah is a Tehran-based DJ, music producer, composer, sound artist, and musician. From playing Tonbak and Daf at the age of six to DJing at the age of sixteen in the underground dance scene, she has established herself as one of Tehran’s most in-demand electronic music and sound artists and composers. Nesa is also the founder and managing director of Deep House Tehran, which focuses on showcasing Iranian electronic musicians.

PREMIERE : Nesa Azadikhah - Fleeting Emotions

This collection, consisting of original music by all Iranian women artists, is dedicated to the recent uprising of people, especially the women in Iran who have endured silencing, censorship, and forced control over the past four decades. Throughout Iranian history, women have been at the forefront of music and performing arts. However, in the past 44 years under the Islamic regime, women in Iran have been banned from singing, dancing, and performance. Facing threats to the safety of themselves and their families, to their career and reputation, female artists are forced to quit, leave Iran, or to go underground facing grave risks. Despite this, Iranian women have remained active and at the forefront of their art, pushing boundaries from Iran and different corners of the world. 

Iran has risen up to a revolution. On September 16, 2022, A young girl named Mahsa Jina Amini was killed in the hands of Iran’s morality police, a police force assigned to enforce Islamic dress codes on women through harassment methods. Since then, major protests have broken out across the country and throughout the world. What started as a spark in protesting justice for Mahsa Amini has since turned into a revolution with people fearlessly protesting across the country. Government forces have brutally killed, arrested, and tortured many protestors including children and teengars. Despite this, the protests are getting larger and larger and the fight for freedom of oppression for women and girls has become the greatest of its kind throughout history. 

As a group of Iranian women, this fight is closest to our hearts. We release this collection in solidarity and towards a fight for a free Iran. We dream of a future where women and girls can openly and safely practice, grow, and shine within arts, especially electronic music. From us to you, the free and soon-to-be free world, and to a free Iran. Zan, Zendegi, Azadi [translates to: Woman, Life, Freedom].

The 4th mix of DIARIES TRANSMITS features @nesaazadikhah, the infamous @deephouse-tehran founder, who is a DJ and music producer from Tehran, Iran. She has been playing traditional Iranian instruments since the age of six and started DJing about a decade later. Over the years, she has established herself as one of Iran's most in-demand DJ/producers, regularly touring across Europe and the SWANA region. 
More recently, Nesa Azadikhah co-founded @apranikrecords and collaborated with AIDA to curate a compilation titled WOMAN LIFE FREEDOM. This compilation is a collection of music composed by Iranian women artists, gathered in solidarity with the fight for freedom and justice by Iranian women. Additionally, she holds a residency as a DJ at TES club in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Female Vocalists from Iran and Beyond (24.10.2018, Red Light Radio)

This edition of Female Vocalists from Iran and Beyond explores musical traditions of the Indian subcontinent, particularly that of Pakistan, and of Afghanistan alongside Iran, centring some of the most prominent Pakistani, Afghan, and Iranian female vocalists of the 1950s-1970s era.

Musical interaction between Iranian urban culture and the Indian subcontinent dates back centuries, as far back as the 16th century when a number of Persian poets and musicians, frustrated by the oppressive political and cultural policies of the Safavid rulers, embarked on a pilgrimage to the Mughal court, where they found a lavish source of patronage. Often, when examining Iranian music and its sources, the influence of Arabic modal systems on Iranian music, and vice versa, is cited often. Influences from Indian and Afghan musical cultures on the Persian classical music repertoire and instrumental compositions in popular music to date, tend to be overshadowed. The remarkable contributions of Afghan and the subcontinent's musical traditions are integrated into the musical productions of some of the most prolific female vocalists from Iran in the 1970s, including Googoosh, Ramesh, and Giti. The list of vocalists from Pakistan and Afghanistan includes Iqbal Bano, Naheed Akhtar, Noor Jahan, Hangama, and Mermon Nadiya.
