Carefully navigating her way along the shifting horizon line of our present condition, Istanbul-based composer Ekin Fil never fails to find new pathways with the seemingly eternal nature of her reverb-saturated guitar sceneries. Aquarius/Pisces, her latest creation on Possible Motive, uncovers two tracks of carefully alluring and ambient sonics. The release is available globally on selected digital outlets and as a strictly limited hand engraved 7" lathe-cut vinyl disc.

Ekin Fil - Aquarius

Composer and pianist ​Rose Riebl​ releases her debut album ​‘Do Not Move Stones’​, a tender and transcendent introduction to the accomplished musician’s solo work, and shares Rachmaninov-like fourth single ‘An Ending, Go Back to the Beginning’. Inspired by the poetry of Sappho and David Whyte, the collection of songs are a deep reflection on the composer’s emotional life. Layered acoustic piano forms the bulk of the material, deftly supported by cello parts performed by Ceridwen McCooey.

Of the album Rose says ‘when I write I imagine films that haven’t been made yet, stories that haven’t been told, wide open landscapes and the northern lights, which I once went looking for in Iceland’, she says. This album has these in it, but also the very intimate – late night fears, sirens on the street outside, aching hearts, the sound of wind or the branches of the huge tree outside, which would sometimes creak against the tin roof as she recorded.

The intimate production gives the sense you’re sitting very close in, we hear the creak of keys, hammers, felts. The sound of the piano’s mechanics adding a rhythmic element to the compositions and a layer all their own. ‘An Ending, Go Back to the Beginning’ starts with a siren which Rose heard as she was about to start recording the piece, which leads to a repeated piano motif that is echoed by melancholic cello. All this builds, subtly, to the addition of a deep melodic theme on the piano, which begins quietly, slowly, each note placed with great care.

This album is her first foray into DIY recording, and often she found herself battling against the task late at night, or early in the morning as the city was sleeping. Rose learned to record in the process of making this album and the production gives this body of work a unique timbre.

Do Not Move Stones​ will be released on ​Friday June 18th via Icelandic independent music label ​INNI​, founded by revered film and television composer ​Atli Orvarsson​. Rose is INNI’s first Australian ​artist.
