"I’ve always been sensitive to my surroundings and the world is in a very vulnerable place at the moment. I felt I needed to express my true emotions through something a little bit different to a conventional DJ mix and also that just writing one song was not going to be enough.

It was almost like composing a score, the only difference being that the pictures were only in my head. My ambition was for the music to evoke a visual response in the listener rather than just an emotional one. To do that I took some audio snippets of real life current affairs scenarios that really struck a chord in me and then used my DJ instinct to think of a track/musical piece that would fit well to that particular scene. Sometimes when I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted I added my own music over existing music or did my own sound design to create my own sound effects and also wrote some original pieces in the moment. It was very important to me to create ultimate flow and I felt this could only have been achieved without having any beats supporting the music. I also didn't want to make it eclectic nor constant as I felt that would disrupt the listener’s focus emotionally. There is a strong dynamic range throughout similar to classical music and also some parts that are almost meditative and then in contrast some more intense moments.

Kolkata born, Mumbai based Troja aka Trideep Roy is a music producer and DJ from India who over the last few years has developed a strong following around the world. Through his productions, Troja seeks to emote his inner voice with carefully crafted soundscapes. His distinct sound of house and techno fused with classical and ethnic influences has connected him to a wider global audience. His first EP ‘Shanti’, released on Windhorse Records, received strong support from established artists such as Acid Pauli, Yoko and Nick Warren to name a few. As a DJ, Troja believes each sound and style has a particular time and place. This has led to his music library spanning a wide range, from slower grooves with shamanic feels, to more upbeat house with enchanting melodies and peak time, atmospheric techno. It is this range that has give him the opportunity to play across numerous venues and festivals in India and share the decks with world-renowned acts such as Parra for Cuva, El_Txef_A, Atish, Stimming & Giegling label head Konstantin.

Trideep also wears many other hats in the music industry, as he works with Getting Deeper, an online music magazine and blog focused on showcasing exclusive music through premieres, podcasts and reviews. He is also a core team member of Salomo Records; a new label focused on showcasing upcoming techno artists, which is getting strong support from artists like Âme, Solomun & Eelke Kleijn. Keep an eye out for this up-and-coming talent, as he will surely be making his way into your record collection sooner than later.

Words from Troja:
I don't like to plan too much for my mixes, as the essence really gets lost if you over think it. I just do something for myself and play out as I'm feeling it. It's raining right now in Mumbai, the monsoons are coming and its truly a very special time. Oddly enough, I love this season; although it's always grey and wet and water-logged, there is this unexplainable charm and energy I love to feed off of. I recently moved into a new house with my girlfriend, and while Bombay is the big, bad jungle, it really feels like we live in a little village in Goa, with palm trees and everything outside my balcony. The sea is just minutes away. I took one such rainy evening as my inspiration (although sometimes these things are so subconscious, that I choose my conscious-self to feel the energy rather than think about it) and express this slightly moody, slightly easy but also slightly contemplative (in tune with the thunder outside) state. Smoking God's hash in this weather from the Himalayas and this picturesque scene, you can't help but not let the mood seep into your track selection, so really this has been my guiding power.

It's been about a year, the time felt right to make another Slinky mix. For those unfamiliar, this is a series of mixes I do occasionally, where tracks are intentionally stretched and slowed down. Transitions and overlaps are purposefully drawn out, the way these tracks slowly wind together becomes a point of focus, as opposed to an invisible, smooth transition. This mix evokes the passage of time, which has needless to say felt quite strange this year.
