We are writing the year 3021. The very first gene-manipulated virus-free post-covidians made it to carry their infra speakers back onto earths surface to play sublows for the concrete jungles, or whats left of them at least. They brought their ancient rituals and lullabies from their dungeons: sounding like a dark future of Dub without nice and happy skanking where only ruff and rugged dirty bone structures have remained the centuries below the planet's crust.
The tribe's chief a.k.a. The Duke Of Dub hands down two bare riddims with a jukey groove, highly detailed breakbeat layers and anything closely dubby only greeting from a very far mountain of suffaration:
Everyting Gwan In opens like an easy halftime beat, but sucks the listeners into its roughness quite fast, allowing no breath or sun inside between all them sinister soundscapes and speech scraps.
Fight Dub appears to be fried in the same pan at first, but got a slightly more stepping bass, lifting the classic breaks and vocal bits up into a merciless footwerk climax towards the end. Jah man!

Manchester’s veteran Junglist Chimpo steps up on Astrophonica to tune in to his pirate radio influences and broadcast an EP full of explosive Jungle energy and Hardcore charm. Phone line crew, this one’s for you . . .

“On The Dial is my take on the Jungle music I grew up listening to on Manchester pirate radio stations in the nineties. The two main pirates that played Jungle are referenced di- rectly in two of the tracks: Buzz FM and Luv NRG. The tracks reference styles I’ve picked up from some of my favourite producers growing up: Danny Breaks, Krust, Die, Sappo, L Double, etc. Rig Doctor is more Old Skool using a sample referencing the guy who would fix up the technicals in running a pirate and styled by early Hardcore Jungle Techno. The whole EP is essentially a love letter to one of the first genres I fell in love with on the for- mat I really learned about it on.” - Chimpo.

Rig Doctor kicks off the weekend with a rush of high speed vocals and a homage to the ones behind the scenes making the station tick... The Rig Doctor. Up after ads is the positive lunch time roller LUV NRG and a trademark Chimpo bubble to set speed. Opening track ‘Dub Free pt.3 (Rose line mix)’ is a masterfully produced and mixed dub techno groove by Hiss Is Bliss. With skills at this level, there’s clearly more to come from this French artist.

On the flip, USA born Bukkha, digs into the deep dub techno trenches with Dub Envelope. Situated at 115bpm, a tempo with much possibility, Bukkha hits the nail on the head with ease and exposes a different side to his usual output.

Closing out this carefully curated 3 track 12” - Bristol talent Somah signs off with a dreamy dub garage track titled Knot Up.

Casting a self-reflexive lens over his roots via the medium of crushing, future-rushing soundsystem sonics, Low End Activist returns to Sneaker Social Club with a full-length of monumental proportions.

When the Low End Activism 12” ignited on Sneaker in 2019, it paid tribute to the Blackbird Leys estate in Oxford, UK, where LEA originates from. In the shadow of social inequality and strengthened by the unity of the multi-ethnic community, Blackbird Leys still imposes a powerful influence on LEA’s work, even as he’s stepped out onto Seagrave for last year’s Game Theory album and notched up the first couple of releases on his own self-titled label.

On this new album, Hostile Utopia sums up the conflicting emotions attached to memories of home – how it’s possible to feel nostalgic for the griminess of urban and suburban Britain, its ordinary tales of bitterness and frustration, but also its intrinsic passion and solidarity. At a time when social division is actively engineered by Machiavellian forces, real conviviality at street level feels like an impossible dream.

LEA communicates these tensions through a style which is becoming his signature – dynamic bass torsion and chiseled, fractalised rhythms slugging around the 130 mark. It’s moody like a UK-themed record ought to be, but it’s not morose. There’s fierceness in every snap and rumble, as the legacies of hardcore, jungle, dubstep and grime pour into the casing prior to the gunpowder lighting.

On previous LEA releases, the MC roll call has pointed to some of the most vital voices touching the mic in the present day. Flowdan, Sikka Rymes and Trim all had something different to impart over the riddims, and now Hostile Utopia expands on that with the most extensive show of lyrical strength yet. Mez lights up the woozy, abstract grime swerve of ‘Mercenary’ in a musical style. Emz brings a ruthlessly sharp verbal steez to ‘GetGet’, Killa P gets busy toasting over ‘DFRNT STYLE’ and ‘Superhighway’ carries the dexterous hip-hop flow of Cadence Weapon.

In between those standout tracks, LEA expresses just as much in the production. Tracks brimming with stories to impart, laden with symbols masquerading as samples and draped in aural garb that firmly places Hostile Utopia in a place, a mood, that could only belong to the UK. It’s a hybrid sound just like the society it sprang from, and therein lies its power.
