It's an honour for us to have worked on the first Zero Tolerance Sessions 001.  

Our concept behind the mix was simple - we wanted to pay respects to those who built the foundations of the uncompromising deep and dark ZT sound before us, and who put Melbourne progressive house on the world map. We also wanted to showcase a group of current artists that we feel represents the present and future ZT sound.

Included in this mix are three original records, and four remixes that we have completed that will be coming out on Zero Tolerance later this year, as well as lots of unreleased tracks + re-edits.  If you've followed Zero Tolerance over the years you're in for a rollercoaster ride.

A tracklist will be available at a later date ,as we would love you to listen without any pre-conceptions and to maintain an element of surprise.  Feel free to comment and let us know what you think or if you'd like any Track ID's.

Having recently just released a remix for the relaunch of Melbourne’s historic label Zero Tolerance, host James Beetham finds out all the details this Saturday at 9pm as his chats with lads before they lay down a guest mix.

MCKEOWN & BASSIRAY ( @mckeown-bassiray )

Mckeown & Bassiray are two Melbourne-based producers who met more than 15 years ago over their passion for the dark progressive sound that engulfed dancefloors worldwide.

 
Previously releasing on Proton Music, the pair have returned to the studio to focus their energy on Zero Tolerance Recordings which was recently relaunched in 2021 by Gab Oliver.  Originally an outlet for a few like-minded friends who wanted to make music no other labels would touch, this imprint ended up maturing into a deeply respected label with a loyal cult following that was the cornerstone of the dark progressive sound in the early 2000s. The pair have recently adapted this sound with modern textures, layers & engineering to make it not only unique but refreshingly different.

 
The pair will be featured as the label’s first release since 2004 with their remix of Subritual by Deep Funk Project VS Austin Leeds, which has already been supported by the likes of Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, Brian Cid, Nicolas Rada, Chris Fortier, and Lemon8. This will be followed up by a two-track EP of original music, as well as a release as ‘Depth Institute’ which is a collaboration between Mckeown, Bassiray, and Gab Oliver.

It is an honour for us to be included on the 333 Sessions Podcast.  We spent many months working on this extended mix, and the entire process was extremely rewarding.  After shortlisting a large set of records, we set out to cohesively piece together just over 3.5 hours of deep hypnotic sounds that we love so much.  The mix starts off with deep slow house, and then extends to Progressive House and Progressive Breaks. It contains a lot of records we specifically wrote for the mix, both individually, as “Mckeown & Bassiray” and  “Depth Institute” production outfits, as well as unreleased and forthcoming releases on our much beloved Zero Tolerance label.

333 Sessions 048 - McKeown & Bassiray

I've been hesitant to share this publicly since I recorded it, because I know it's not for everyone. It is truly a sonic experiment that traverses a lot of vibrational terrain ... So I already know not everybody will vibe. 😅 Regardless, I had always told myself that it was only going to be for my ears & personal process, but it felt like the right time to make it public as we are currently in the depths of a Gemini New Moon portal. 🌑  A time for self-advocacy & path-forging. So, here we go. 

I originally recorded this as a means to process the death of my Father, and the near simultaneous birth of my Son, 2 months ago. The mythic-ness of the timing (or lack thereof) between these incredible life-events is something I could have never imagined would be possible, yet they both happened... and I was left in their wake to make sense of it all. There I sat in deep grief, accompanied by an almost overwhelming sense of joy.

In the sparse moments of free-time I was given after Rael was born, I found my fingers gravitating ... almost yearning towards specific sounds, tracks, and samples that truly seemed to resonate with what I was feeling. Lots of Jazz elements that might Father might've enjoyed in his younger years. Sounds ranging from the bold, experimental riffs of Sun Ra & his Arkestra all the way to the intricate, sometimes explosive compositions of King Crimson. 

There are obscurely minimal, yet melodic structures throughout, though they always find their resolution. I also utilized a good bit of manual pitch manipulation as a means to affect the overall emotional theme, which definitely causes certain tracks to become something else entirely. There are meditative, ambient spaces littered with symphonic over-tones that, at times, become encumbered by chaos & dissonance. The dissonance, I believe to be useful in that the energy of chaos is always followed by a release & surrender into stillness. So, somehow, if you are willing to ride it out, you can find yourself floating in a bed of feathers on the other-side of what might seem an unbearable experience. It's all purposeful.
Another piece to this set's curation is that, while it was coming together, I had envisioned a very intentional space within which it would be listened. A room full of candles ... or perhaps a crackling fire under a Full or New Moon, such as this one. A bowl of copal burning off to the side. A ceremonial circle of individuals gathered with the intention of healing, mending, and perhaps spelunking the depths of their psyche, aided by their medicine of choice. This set, of course, as the backdrop for the experience. 

Truly, it gets weird, and there is real opportunity to evoke the ancient, embodied-self. As the curator of this experience, I find within it ample opportunities for exploration of the mind, a disillusionment of self, and perhaps a re-imagining of one's own internal landscape. A re-visioning of what is possible to perceive as a human-being processing the shape of life. Maybe you'll find something different. Either way, I hope you enjoy the ride, and perhaps receive something of value from the journey.

As one of the rare occasions in the currently otherwise closed underground club 'Lucys Sky' in Düsseldorf i had the pleasure to play the warmup for the fine gentleman Eric's birthday party, also known as @samueljackson and one part of the Absurd Music (@absurd_event) collective from Düsseldorf.

The first hour-ish is a gentle intro with non-electronic and mostly non-danceable music that i love and appreciate to listen to. After that, we groove collectively into a wild and long slow night.

Deep. Dark. Progressive. Those three adjectives captured a moment in electronic music that rippled through the scene like a sonic ideology. The sound emerged at the turn of the millennium and embraced its name with laser-like precision: it sure was deep, undoubtedly dark, and undeniably progressive.  

It’s a moment that Stuart McKeown and Darius Bassiray know all too well. As part of Melbourne’s Zero Tolerance crew and two-thirds of Depth Institute, they champion its contemporary incarnation, releasing on labels like Mango Alley, Sound Avenue, and, of course, Zero Tolerance.  

They also lived through it, making them perfectly positioned to pontificate on the scene.
