Introducing the new WUMP Trio, @Zes-T:

Zes-T is the brainchild of WUMP musicians Metasine, Proc, and Mist Out (Dave Kallman), and let’s just say that we’re a teeny, tiny bit excited about this release. This trio aims to bring some zest to the scene with copious amounts of live instrumentation and collaborative improvisation, leaving all preconceived notions of future funk in the dust. In 2016, they made their secret debut (as the Metasine Live Band) with their well-received remix of Gramatik’s “Anima Mundi,” and they haven’t stopped since. After working together for the past year or so on their debut record, these 3 wizards are finally ready to show you what Zes-T is all about. We are proud to present their debut single, “How Much Will It Take?”, off of their forthcoming ‘ANIMAT’ record (spring).

Whenever Metasine is involved in a project, you can expect whimsically wompy, funky ear candy with loads of heavy bass and live instrumentation, so you should already be excited. After gaining notable momentum in 2016 with some massive EP releases and an exclusive interview with The Untz, Metasine is channeling his vision and passion into the Zes-T trio. This new project is truly something to get excited about, as he has teamed up with two incredible masters of their respective crafts who happen to share Metasine’s passion for artistic innovation. You may remember Proc for his slick guitar licks on Metasine’s ‘Mad Delay’ EP (rel. 2016), but you’ve never heard him quite like this before. He lets loose and rips a sensual solo after the first heavy section in this track, proving that he’s not just your average axe-wielder. His guitar will be a focal point for this trio, as Metasine & Dave Kallman provide the spaciousness for Proc to thrive and deliver some killer riffs. Last but certainly not least, we have percussionist/producer, Mist Out (Dave Kallman, formerly E-Z Manor). Building a sizeable following in the electro-soul & future funk communities as E-Z Manor with his smooth, crisp sound and consistently out-of-the-box percussion rhythms, Dave is the perfect drummer for this trio. 

“How Much Will It Take?” speaks to the reluctance of the general populace to wake up from the daydream of living on auto-pilot, as the lyrics speak to the unfortunate truth that many people just prefer to live in ignorance and comfort rather than taking control of their own lives. Beginning with filtered vocals and smooth opening melodies featuring Proc’s guitar accents, the track eases us into the desired mood of openness. Next thing you know, we hear the sound design of Metasine & Dave Kallman come together in a beautiful, wompy way as the first drop takes us from 0 to 100 with tons of bass and powerful percussive elements that immediately get us moving. Now that we’re all warmed up, Proc comes in with a sensual guitar solo atop a bed of keys and minimal percussion, impregnating us with those bluesy, soulful runs that feed the soul. What’s next is truly just a privilege to listen to, as we hear saxophone, guitar, and horns ripping the same sassy melody atop a funky swing beat reminiscent of 1920s big band, but with way more bass and attitude.

Happy WUMP Wednesday, folks! Today we’ve got a really special single by @Soul-Suppliers, featuring the wordsmith @Rasp-5, who is adroit at tackling complex concepts in his lyrics and masterfully painting a picture with his cutthroat flow. Oh, and in case you didn’t know, Soul Suppliers is a powerhouse funk duo consisting of WUMP artists @Pi-Wrecks and @MistOutMusic. Each of them brings a different style of funky bass music to the table, and the synergy of their two creative minds results in a hefty dose of soul and feel-good, high energy funk: hence the name Soul Suppliers.

If you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t heard the genius that is NYC-based rapper/MC/lyricist, Rasp-5, then you’re in for a real treat. Prepare to fall in love with your new favorite lyrical mastermind, as his verses take us deep into the infinite rabbit hole that is the human neocortex, or as he puts it, “the mind’s spiderweb.” Not only are Rasp-5’s lyrics a refreshing dose of originality and purposefulness in the increasingly substanceless realms of “hip-hop”, but his meticulously crafty flow and crisp articulations prove that he really is on some kind of different level than most MC’s these days. It’s clear that he’s a poet at heart, a painter with words who has no interest in following any kind of generic meter or predictable rhyme scheme, and Soul Suppliers provide the perfect canvas for him to work his magic.

The intro eases us into a dusty, old school vibe as the percussion gradually shifts from a subtle background element to a powerful, driving beat, providing the backbone for bluesy guitar licks and saxophone melodies. Right away you can tell this piece is going to be a special one, as the clean production and flawlessly layered samples instantly capture the heart and open it up to receive the transmission that Rasp-5 offers in the following moments. With familiar depictions of the esoterically psychedelic nature of the universe and playful, yet potent, articulations of inner dialogues, ‘Different Points of View’ truly offers some insight into the nature of perspective and what it means to exist within a world that is merely a reflection of our inner state of being. Add a dose of introspective honesty and a pinch of creative filter work, and you’ve got a fresh fusion of electro-soul and hip-hop that is sure to inspire producers and MC’s around the world to expand their horizons. 

‘Different Points of View’ is a masterpiece from start to finish, as it is a singularly cohesive piece that will undoubtedly get you movin’ and groovin’, particularly during the heavier sections where Pi Wrecks & Dave Kallman let loose with some tasteful aggression and grittiness. These sections offer the perfect compliment to the soulful melodies, and they give Rasp-5 the opportunity to show off his attitude and grit, demonstrating how well-rounded all 3 of these guys are in their respective crafts.

Soul Suppliers - Different Points of View (Feat. Rasp-5)

Happy 4/20, you flower-igniting, THC-ingesting rascals! We’ve got a special release on this sacred day from Colorado producer/funk-slinger, @FunkStatik, that will be a necessary addition to every 4/20 playlist. ‘Let’s Get It’ is a smooth, refreshing, and deceptively danceable piece that takes us on a blissful ride through melodic funk town on the back of a squinty-eyed camel. 

Featuring a multitude of different textures and flavors, ‘Let’s Get It’ showcases FunkStatik’s ability to create a balanced, multi-dimensional listening experience. We begin with a spacious intro that establishes depth, as the synths seem to arise and fall away as if moving close to us for a moment before disappearing back into the silence from which they emerged. This mystique evolves into a groovy, uplifting beat with creative sub-bass work and cooling synth melodies that evoke a rising feeling within. FunkStatik then grounds us back down with some fat, juicy bass textures that satisfy the low end, as a captivating new synth (reminiscent of an interdimensional pan flute) carries the melody. Throughout the piece, we hear every element evolve and progress in a unique, but somehow cohesive manner. Everything from the subtle, staccato piano accents to the meaty bass growls contribute to the dynamic, ever-progressing mood of the song, and even the vocal sample that invites one to “get it” changes throughout as we move into different sections. You will inevitably close your eyes and drift away from the illusory prison of your thoughts as the vibrations work their magic, and you’ll gradually move into a more spacious and open mind state as you feel your body moving to the undeniable groove. 

‘Let’s Get It’ truly provides a cleansing and refreshing experience for the listener, so we recommend indulging in some of today’s plant of honor, closing your eyes, and diving headfirst into this piece of art. FunkStatik - Let's Get It

Woweee, surprise folks- some ZESTY new music comin’ atcha! Riding the momentum of being selected as a finalist in The Untz Challenge VIII last month, @Zes-T continues to blow minds with their unique and refreshing fusion of live instrumentation and rowdy, wompy bass music production. With a project as wild as @Zes-T, we’ve decided to do things a bit differently in case you haven’t noticed. Rather than dropping their debut EP, ‘ANIMAT’, all at once, we’re having a ton of fun just dropping these tracks one at a time on you all so you can fully appreciate each one. If you’re just now tuning in, Zes-T is a powerhouse trio consisting of 3 WUMP Collective musicians: @Metasine (production, saxophone), @MistOutMusic (percussion, production, mastering), and @therealProc (guitar). They’re already making waves with their first two songs released, and we’re just beginning to scratch the surface of the seemingly limitless potentiality that this group displays. 

Today’s release, ‘I Don’t Care,’ is perfectly titled because it is a sonic embodiment of their approach to creating music. What don’t they care about, exactly? Connor, Dave, and Alex have made it clear that they don’t really care what other people in the funky bass music community are doing, and that they’d prefer to blaze their own trail using live instrumentation, authentically raw and heavy bass elements, and occasional, tasteful sampling of classic tunes. While their first two releases incorporate groove-based rhythms and guitar melodies atop funky beats with just a taste of heaviness, ‘I Don’t Care’ takes that style into a bass heavy, minimalistic aberration that will inevitably make your face small as you find yourself lost in the Zes-T sauce.

We begin with a feel-good funky beat and some guitar from Proc that inevitably forms a smile on your face, but it’s not long before the filth erupts into existence. The slap bassline in this tune is ridiculously catchy and carries us through the heavy sections with grace, while the familiar Patti Labelle sample shows that Zes-T is a strong, independent group that don’t need NO man. You’ll find yourself singing along to those iconic, provocative lyrics as they serve as the glue that connects the varying sections of the song, and there’s just enough of Proc’s guitar to compliment the fat, wet bass that melts the soul. The low end in this tune is really something special, so listening through beefy headphones and/or nice monitors will take it to the next level for the listener. Metasine and Mist Out (Dave Kallman) are notorious in the WUMP community for birthing some NASTY basses, which is hilarious and fantastic, given that they’re typically dwelling in the funk/electro-soul/blues side of things.
