This mix is an exploration into heavy percussion-driven music, which is something that has been influencing my production process recently. The set blends tracks from different eras, scenes and genres, trying to create a cohesive piece that moves across different moods and BPMs but keeps always percussion as the central driving element. It is not a dancefloor oriented mix, but rather one which leverages the radio format to experiment with unexpected combinations and a wide range of tempos in ways that may not be possible to do in the club.

Dubstep, UKG and Jungle, as genres, are each directly-influenced by genres Reggae and Dub, and by Jamaican-made soundsystem culture. Notice the bassline as a common denominator! Unlike its most-direct predecessors UKG and Jungle, Dubstep inherits the spaced-out percussion of Dub. So, bass gets to headline with Dubstep. 

In this mix are some of my favorite Dubstep tunes along with a few genre outliers (the vocalists' songs are not among the outliers, fwiw. MCs are no stranger to Dubstep, nor UKG and Jungle and Reggae, for that matter!).

YouTube user @/willb1405 describes the genre so resonantly on @/PropaDubstep's YouTube upload of Mala's Blue Notez: "Dubstep was best when it was a reflection of post rave Britain. After the colourful optimism of the 90s we stagnated, and felt left in a murky, cold brick laden dystopia, like the future never happened. Dubstep was a way to find beauty in that darkness, in those streets, like the glowing warmth of a streetlight on a cold wet pavement."
