Cellular Division

Threshold, four of six, was an idea I began working with early in the development of the album. I originally planned on scrapping the piece (uploaded on my soundcloud as "Ambient Sketches"). I revisited the work a couple months later and had a new found interest in the work which I fleshed out.

Laniakea is a word I ran into recently that I saw surrounding science articles/sites/discussions. It's being used to label the geography of our local galactic supercluster. More so, it is a Hawaiian word that roughly translates to "boundless heavens/universe". I love thinking about music as a boundless universe for exploration. Hope you guys enjoy track 5/5 for the 40 minute album Laniakea.

Bloom, track five of six, serves as an homage to Gossamir. Guitar and percussion driven, I had interest for this work to be played by a great and talented friend of mine, Note Patommavat. Much of this piece was composed while in Thailand at various hotels and areas where I had time to work.

Hey! This is a track I've been working on my spare time. It's been coming along really well and first started when I was playing with pitched bowed cymbals.

The ending electronic part reminds me of a helplessly confused robot crying out for help as a military power shackles away its freedom.

Azurelisk was a composition I returned to frequently, constantly tweaking the mix. The composition itself came rather quickly. The title comes from a video game I designed when I was younger. One particular character, the Azurelisk was a fast, light character rooted in nature. I felt this piece embodied the Azurelisk. 

I explored a lot altered dominant things in this piece for the first time (I primarily wrote it a year or more ago). I wanted to reach back and honor Dreamsura with this work by getting a quintessential dream&bass tune.

Njo is a piece very dear to me. It represents a codification of all the negative feelings I experienced in the last year. The title itself, translates to "wrong" in the Igbo language. 

I ended up spending three months working on animation for the entire piece.

A matrioshka brain is a theoretical mega-structure in space that surrounds a star and harnesses its energy as processing power. A matrioskha brain would have the processing power capable to store an entire civilizations consciousness and simulate a universe. 

This piece is comprised of nothing but swells. Matrioshka is from the first person perspective of an engineer in space, going outside to work on the ship during an anomaly. It sounds much more like the scenery to a movie rather than a piece of music but I love it and I think it stands as a great contrast against the rest of the album.

"Stargaze, written and produced in 2012, presents this unique blend of morphing texture, intricately jagged percussion, and a rich, yet restrained, harmonic palette. Erose has described her recent work, especially the piece being performed today, as an attempt to build a complete, immersive journey. This journey, in particular, chronicles the story of a primitive form of life which unknowingly resides on the surface of a drifting asteroid, soaring through space with its sight set on a nearing celestial body. Juxtaposed against this narrow, innocent perspective is a civilization brought to awe and humility by the discovery of this looming threat."

Additionally, all of the sounds heard in Stargaze are constructed by Zhea. Through the implementation of numerous techniques, from field recording and spectral morphing to granular synthesis and re-sampling, Erose is able to achieve a completely personal and unique ensemble for each piece. Naturally, this process in conjunction with composition often result in pieces that take an enormous amount time to complete. Stargaze, sitting at 9:51, was written over the course of two months, demanded over 120 hours of actual working time and will surely capture the attention of audiences, regardless of demographic."

STARGAZE [from Dreamsura]

Dreamscape is a piece I spent about 120 hours working on. It has two large sections that both span about 11 minutes (A and B). Each macro section is roughly broken up in five smaller components; a, a', b, c, a''.Each of these macro sections represent a specific processes and textural shifts that both of the themes undergo throughout the piece. All of the primary thematic material is made clear by the prescense of text.

Both stanzas of text experience gradual change in this linear fashion: the original theme exposes itself, it then repeats with more emphasis on experimental sound design and drum/bass content. Shortly after the restatement of these themes, they dissolve into an orchestral texture spattered with ambience and accessory melodic instruments. Each of these orchestral textures die out into a period of evolving ambience that leads into a marimba cadenza (c). Each marimba cadenza climaxes into a hyper aggressive restatement of the theme it belongs to.

I tried experimenting with a process like approach to some of the harmony in this piece. The harmony for the primary and secondary themes are derived through formalist like treatment of chromatic mediants. The first theme, I sequence maj9 chords up by a m3, down by a M3. Resulting in a maj9 shape that meanders down by halfsteps. When I finally sequence back to the original root that started the process, the harmony begins to tonicize that region to prepare for a cadence to restart or end the thematic content. The second theme is the complete opposite of the first theme, I sequenced m9 chords up by a M3 and down by a m3. Resulting in a completely different sonority shape climbing in the opposite direction.

To emphasize this difference in thematic ideas, I tried to make each macro section polarizingly opposite. For the A theme's orchestral texture, I explored a lot of altered dominants in minor modes utilizing phyrgian and dorian. The B theme's orchestral texture contrasts this by utilizing the major modes lydian/ionian. Each of the ambient sections are also constructed out of contrasting sonority structures.

In short, the piece is constructed from two primary thematic ideas that undergo the same type of gradual change, just in contrasting colors! And as harmony is viewed as tension and release, I tried to organize my sounds in a way that each constructed sound has it's own dramatic shape based on the sounds that precede and follow each other just like harmony.

Windowpain

I found Eurybia. Heart moved like the ocean. Swallowed by the sea. Easy to feel like I'm drowning. It feels like sinking. It feels like I’m floating. I wish not to be lost under the depths of this ocean—lost inside a void. Rays of light dance and pierce sharply beneath the surface. A space unknown, it's easy to be fearful. A space of chaos, things are beyond control. A wave of order, momentary as it is, provides a bounty of lessons. Above all, I found beauty. Beyond all, I am better than I was before. What else can one wish for? A gift to treasure. A thing to express.

Seven years ago I began experimenting with digital audio. The creation of audio stimulated me far more than any school work or recreational activity. Since my personal discovery of electronic sound, I've been engrossed with the medium. Production and synthesis inevitably led me into the craft of music composition. This album represents my first large scale body of work.

Dreamsura exists as unification between six full pieces that demanded over 700 hours of real time (hundreds more of unquantifiable time) broken across 19 months. A monolith of detail, Dreamsura presents a unique blend of advanced harmonic, rhythmic, and formal language alongside cutting edge sound design. With an emphasis on texture, atmosphere, and shading, I've tried to produce each piece to be as engaging and sensitive as possible.
