Hi guys! In case you're wondering why there have been some changes around here…

I'm rebranding as "Elaine Walker" (me) now instead of ZIA so that people can differentiate between the older ZIA tunes (which were primarily vocal and used 100% hardware synthesizers) and my newer instrumental music (Four-Momentum and No Terrestrial Road) which is predominantly instrumental and composed mainly on software synths. Never fear. Rebranding me as me doesn't really change much. 

Here's a bit of background on Four-Momentum:

Four-Momentum was my first solo album in many years, composed with software synths, which have a different sound than my hardware synths that people came to know ZIA by. Even without the lyrical content, it has the expected outer space theme. But instead of the usual humans-in-space motif, these songs were inspired by space-time itself, thus the title Four-Momentum. I think about this stuff a lot, and that's the part of my brain where this music came from.

Many of the songs were also inspired by the math I began doing in 2018– With no practical skills in algebra, I realized that year that I had a weird gift for visualizing mathematical shapes (topological or geometric shapes, thinking in "4d" etc.. infinity must be defeated!). Anyway, I naturally began researching various math topics with my mathematician partner, who was my new best friend at the time, helping me discover I had skills I never knew about. Our first research paper was accepted in 2020 to the Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society, the same publication where my dad, Elbert A. Walker, was first published in the 1950s. Mom, Carol L. Walker, is also a mathematician and the first woman to get her Ph.D. at New Mexico State University. In closing, I would like my listeners to peruse the topic of four-momentum and Einstein's relativity while listening (or roller skate while listening). Or better yet, check out my math on http://ziaspace.com if you feel inclined. I still can't do algebra, and I don't expect you to either, so I will work in the months to come to translate a lot of it into English (and images, many of which are already posted).

Four-Momentum was my first release since Drum'n'Space (2011), partly because I was writing a 300-page physics/philosophy book – "Matter Over Mind: Cosmos, Chaos, and Curiosity," now on Amazon. Check it out, and please don't neglect to read the intro. It's one of those books where the intro is so important you may miss the book's main point if you don't read it.

Several different equal temperaments (microtonality!) are used in Four-Momentum – 10edo, 14edo, 15edo,16edo, 17edo, 20edo, and the Bohlen-Pierce Scale (no octaves!). An earlier version of Four-Momentum was released on Split-Notes.com microtonal netlabel, December 2018, and is now being re-released with the songs formerly on the Trapezoid album.

Four-Momentum | Elaine Walker

All songs are written in 19 and 10 note per octave tunings. SHEM was released by Young American Records in Boston in 1995, supporting ZIA's first tour of the North Eastern states. Young American shared resources and personnel with Boston's popular Performer Magazine. When the magazine had a hostile takeover by one of the investors, Young American lost their office space and other resources and went out of business. ZIA got picked up by Fifth Colvmn Records in DC, run by Jared from the band, Chem Lab. ZIA went on a second tour of the South Eastern states in 1996. Fifth Colvmn was eventually dropped by Caroline and went out of business. SHEM's lyrical content was strongly inspired by Zecharia Sitchin's book The 12th Planet. Hand Held is ZIA's first hint at a love song, about a video character wanting to feel a human touch. Disevolve was inspired by the book Neuromancer. River pokes fun at both liberals and conservatives. The more raw, funky sound of SHEM was inspired by the popular Grunge/Funk/Metal band Cobalt 60 because Elaine was soon to be married to the guitarist, Dan Mullen. 

The last track is multimedia that Elaine created in Macromedia Director in 1994. Download SHEM.zip and try it at your own risk –http://www.ziaspace.com/ZIA/multimedia/SHEM.zip. It is a stand alone application for Mac Classic and a mid-‘90s version of Windows. It gives a narration of our future in space and why we should embrace technology; not fear it. It also contains a history of the US Space Program and some facts about our solar system.

Most of ZIA's live show consists of material from Big Bang, and if you do not yet own a ZIA CD, buy this one first! The title track is about the grand cosmic event, the Big Bang, from which we were born. Golden and Nibiru were strongly inspired by Zecharia Sitchin's book The 12th Planet. This CD goes beyond Elaine's love for cold technology and outer space, with some slightly more down to Earth songs, emotionally inspired during Elaine's married years in the mid 90's.

Here's a bit of background on No Terrestrial Road:

The No Terrestrial Road title track was inspired by a peculiar, almost creepy, thing I realized about the math I was working on. It's one of those things where you can't get from here to there without going through some imaginary space. There is no terrestrial road from here to there. Humans.. we can't think in enough dimensions! And if humanity is to have any far-flung future, it will continue where there are no terrestrial roads.

That vibe is basically what kicked off this album. I'm also absolutely obsessed with aliens, not just aliens in general, like in movies, but real aliens that are surely peppered evenly distributed around the Universe. Maybe some are here now. Perhaps some were here in the past. I have no idea, but it's all very intriguing. I'm also convinced that unless we intervene with ourselves, we will look like the grey aliens in our far-flung future. Say we floated around in the zero gravitational darkness of space for long enough– our bones would weaken, including our skulls, allowing our brains to spread out and expand. Our eyes would get huge to see in the dark and shielded from radiation. Telepathy (or a Neuralink-like device) would make our facial expressions less necessary, and less focus on eating all day would make our mouths less prominent. Hair is just weird, anyway. So unless we become robots or mutants of some sort on purpose, we'll become the greys. It seems evident to me. Don't worry. It won't happen to your grandkids.

Elaine Walker is an electronic musician and microtonal composer. She is the author of a non-fiction book, Matter Over Mind: Cosmos, Chaos, and Curiosity (2016). Realizing she had a gift for visualizing mathematics at age 50, by 54 she had three published math papers (see arXiv.org).
