The work "Youth" was created in November 2020.  The song is inspired by the work "Chou Nu'er" by Xin Qiji, a famous poet in the Southern Song Dynasty.  "Shubo Mountain Road in the Wall", this work shows Xin Qiji's pursuit of ideals in his youth and vigour.  When I was studying music and chasing my dreams, I also experienced a lot of disapproval from others, so I felt very deeply.  Some new creations were made on the basis of this poetry to complete this work.  This is a folk-rock style work, using a typical pop-rock band instrument configuration.  In order to highlight the nationality of this work, I added a bridge section of Chinese folk songs.  The work wants to encourage everyone who is still chasing dreams on the road to dreams. On the road of dreaming, we may climb high mountains or fall low, but as long as we persist, we will definitely reach the other side of our dreams.

The Summer of York ---- A Soundscape music of York

This piece is a soundscape music, inspired by the city where I presently reside. I currently reside in York, England, a well-known tourist destination with a long history and a large daily tourist population. I decided to sample the settings and noises of some of York's most well-known tourist spots for this piece. Even if listeners have never been to York before, I hope this piece of music will give them a sense of what it's like to live there.

I chose popular tourist destinations like York Minster, the University of York, York City Centre, Clifford's Tower, and the river Ouse for the recording. Additionally, York is home to many ducks, therefore they were also utilised to record the soundscape. This recording was made with a ZOOM H5 piece of equipment.

An amazing journey, indeed. I started out on foot from the Ladybower Inn bus stop and strolled down the west bank of the Ladybower Reservoir's northern tributary. I made the decision to take the east bank path back to the beginning after arriving at Derwent Dam.

During this walk, I found a number of interesting sounds. I was particularly interested in the very large number of streams on the slopes of the east and west banks, all of which feed into Ladybower Reservoir. Some of them flowed fast, some slow, some through steel pipes and some fell on dry fallen leaves. I was most surprised to find a miniature 'nature concert hall', a small space formed naturally by the rocks, in which the streams fall in drops, some on the leaves, some on the rocks, in a random rhythm with different sounds as if it were a Symphony of Nature.

I have tried to present these sounds with a small amount of editing.

Walking in the Ladybower Reservoir - Stream into large rivers

Bakewell Love Locks Bridge was built on the River Wye. Since 2012, couples have been hanging carved locks here to declare their commitment to each other, and it has now become a popular spot for local weddings. As you stand on the bridge, you can hear the rushing water stirring up the cascading waves passing beneath you, as well as the ducks calling out as they scramble for food on the shore.

As I stood on the bridge and listened, it was as if I truly experienced the selflessness and beauty of love. The words "Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it" from Song of Songs 8:7 came to mind.

All Saints Church is an iconic building in Bakewell, the most popular town in the Peak District. When I visited, the church was closed to the public, so I sat in front of it to listen to the sounds of the surrounding area. The church is surrounded by greenery, providing plenty of habitat for birds. However, because the church is located along a road where cars frequently pass by, I found it difficult to concentrate on the sounds of the birds.

As I waited for the surroundings to quiet down, I gradually began to relax and clear my mind. Suddenly, the church bells rang, accompanied by a few very clear bird calls—the sounds I had been hoping to hear. The church bells interrupted my relaxation but also seemed to awaken the sleeping birds in the trees. Fortunately, I recorded the entire experience on my recorder.

Although the world is noisy, the streams still play the harmonious music of nature.

溪流的乐章｜The Symphony of Streams

Can you believe that such astonishing noise exists amidst such beautiful scenery? 

This is Clifford's Tower, a famous tourist attraction in York, England, and the noise comes from the Crown Court located to the east of Clifford's Tower. Due to the abundance of trees here, it has naturally become a habitat for many bird species. Such noise undoubtedly affects the health of the surrounding wildlife and humans. According to measurements, the noise is approximately 7926Hz and 73.16dB. This audio was recorded using my iPhone 11 Pro Max as I walked from the point where the noise disappears all the way to the source of the noise.

I immediately sent the audio file and spectrogram via email to the York City Council. Fortunately, they took up the case and resolved the noise issue within three days. When I returned to Clifford's Tower, I also recorded the soundscape around after the noise disappeared.

Most notably, Mallyan Spout Waterfall offers an idyllic escape from the clamor of modern life, providing an uninterrupted auditory experience that allows visitors to unwind and reconnect with nature.

Mallyan Spout Waterfall presents an unparalleled auditory sanctuary, harmonizing the soothing sounds of cascading water, rustling leaves, and chirping birds. Situated amidst a picturesque landscape, the ambient melodies of the surrounding streams intertwine with the symphony of wildlife, creating a melodious chorus that resonates throughout the area.

Goathland Station is a remarkable stop along the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. This charming station has gained widespread fame due to its appearance in the iconic Harry Potter film series. While it attracts throngs of visitors eager to capture its cinematic allure, the station's ambiance remains surprisingly serene, with the rhythmic sounds of trains in motion proving far from the expected clamor.

This is the Lister Exhibition at the heart of Goathland town center. Here, a collection of diverse Listers unleashes a symphony of random rhythms as they go about their operations. This audio recording encapsulates the captivating sounds emitted by four distinct Listers in motion, providing a unique auditory experience.

This is Pickering Station, the southern starting point of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, and a must-visit destination for many travelers. Serving as a gateway to the vast expanse of the North York Moors National Park, this region is a treasure trove of diverse habitats, ranging from marshes, grasslands, and ancient woodlands to moss-covered rock outcrops.

The first time using an underwater hydrophone to listen to the sounds underwater, it sounded like alien voices to me.

Echoes of National Parks is a soundscape composition created in 2023. All sound materials used in the composition were recorded by the composer during their participation in the "What Does Your National Park Sound Like" project.

The composer visited various national parks in the UK, capturing a wide range of fascinating sounds. The composition includes elements such as flowing streams, bird songs, church bells, trains, and the noises of transportation. Through this piece, the composer aims to provide listeners with a deeper auditory connection to nature, urging them to appreciate and conserve the unique soundscapes found in national parks.

国家公园的回响｜Echoes of National Parks

The recording location for 'Yakiniku - Dining Environment' is at a Yakiniku restaurant in Osaka, Japan. Yakiniku is a traditional Japanese barbecue cuisine where meat, such as wagyu beef, beef tongue, and pork belly, is typically grilled over charcoal or on a metal grate or hotplate. After grilling, the meat is dipped into small dishes of sauce for seasoning, and various side dishes and desserts are also grilled. In this audio, you can hear the continuous sizzling sound of grilling.

Yakiniku - Dining Environment

The recording location for 'Omakase - Dining Environment' is at an Omakase restaurant in Tokyo. The literal meaning of Omakase is 'I leave it to you.' The chef presents a series of dishes, starting from the lightest to the heaviest, and ending with dessert. During this experience, customers do not need to place orders; they simply wait for the chef to serve what they have prepared. Patrons who choose the Omakase style expect innovation and surprises from the chef's menu selection, turning the meal into an artistic performance. Some may even view it as a form of 'gambling' because customers do not know what the next dish will be. Throughout the dining experience, there is minimal communication between customers and the chef. The chef informs the customer of each dish's name, and the customer enjoys the meal.

Omakase - Dining Environment

The recording location for 'Fushimi Inari Taisha - Prayer' is at Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto, Japan. In front of the main hall of this shrine, there is a wooden apparatus similar to a donation box. People are required to clap their hands twice in prayer and then toss money into this wooden donation box. The sound of clapping hands and the clinking of coins, as they collide with the donation box, reverberates continuously within the main hall, as if each coin drop is the delivery of people's wishes.

Fushimi Inari Taisha - Prayer

The recording location for 'Fushimi Inari Taisha - Quiet Place' is located at Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto. It is one of Kyoto's busiest tourist attractions, but I also found its own kind of silence here. In both 'Ueno Park - Quiet Place' and 'Fushimi Inari Taisha - Quiet Place,' I heard the same insect chirping and its sound resembled that of frogs, but it was not as deep. During subsequent visits, I discovered similar insect sounds in the forests of many regions in Japan. I currently do not know the specific type of insect it is, but I believe it plays a significant role in Japan's soundscapes.

Fushimi Inari Taisha - Quiet Place

The recording location for 'Ueno Park - Quiet Place' is situated in Ueno Onshi Park in Tokyo. It is Japan's first public park and houses important cultural institutions such as the Tokyo National Museum, the National Museum of Western Art, the National Museum of Nature and Science, and the Ueno Zoo. Due to the presence of these significant attractions, it naturally becomes a gathering place for people. I discovered a 'Place of Silence' on one of the pathways within the park. Despite the hustle and bustle, it seemed that everyone had an unspoken agreement not to make noise and instead, they were listening to the silence amidst the commotion.

The recording location for 'Crossroad - Bird Chirping' is an unidentified crossroad in Tokyo. Whenever the traffic light turns green, the speakers on the traffic lights play continuous bird chirping sounds to alert people to proceed. In some parts of China, which is also in the Asian region, pre-recorded human voices are used to signal pedestrians at crossroads. I believe that using bird chirping sounds instead of other practical sounds may be a method to reduce urban noise and provide people with a momentary auditory respite. Hearing a clear bird chirping at a bustling crossroad is indeed a fascinating adventure. There are many crossroads in Tokyo where bird chirping serves as the alert sound like this.

The recording location for 'Tenmabashi Subway Station - Bird Chirping' is from Tenmabashi Subway Station in Tokyo, Japan. As I exited the train, I heard the echoing sounds of birds within the subway station. Later, I discovered that there was a small speaker installed at each staircase exit, and each speaker played different bird calls. Whenever a train arrived at the station, these bird calls would resonate throughout. These overlapping speakers created a surround-sound experience, making it feel as though real birds were flying back and forth within the subway station.

According to information, these bird calls are intended to assist visually impaired individuals in identifying directions and exits. However, for me, hearing pleasant birds chirping in such a noisy environment filled with the clatter of steel was a momentary respite, allowing me to briefly forget the weariness of the journey and enjoy a brief mental retreat.

As long as you go to Japan, you will fall in love there.

Silence often doesn't equate to silence itself. The sound materials for this piece are all derived from recordings made by Boyi during his participation in "The Sound of Adventure," a collaborative project between Cities and Memory and Exodus Adventure Travels. The project is an exploration in sound of the sense of adventure you feel when experiencing a place for the first time. In September 2023, Boyi travelled to Japan in search of sounds filled with an adventurous spirit.

In Japan, amidst bustling environments, you can hear delightful bird songs that offer brief moments of auditory respite, momentarily alleviating the weariness of travel. Despite their surroundings' cacophony, these sounds retain a pristine purity. Their most captivating essence emerges when they persist unadulterated by noise, bravely standing against the tumultuous world. "Exploring Silence - JAPAN" harmoniously blends ambient music and evocative soundscapes. Continuous drone and background sounds act as a cohesive frame, enveloping these captivating soundscapes and . inviting the audience to step into Japan's auditory world and experience the adventure of silence.
