“Native Inversion” is a striking descent into rhythm and reflection — a track that bends structure, emotion, and expectation into something deeply immersive. It’s one of those songs that doesn’t just play; it shifts the atmosphere around you.

The opening sets a meditative tone: distant pads, fractured percussion, and a pulse that feels organic — like it’s breathing rather than beating. As the layers unfold, the sound design becomes more intricate, weaving analog warmth with digital precision. True to its title, “Native Inversion” plays with reversal — melodies flip, patterns dissolve, and the rhythm seems to turn itself inside out, creating a hypnotic sense of motion and disorientation.

There’s a deep emotional current running beneath the technical mastery. The track feels like a journey inward — an exploration of duality, balance, and identity through sound. The use of contrast is beautiful: light and dark tones trade places, soft textures meet sharp edges, and stillness collides with drive.

By the end, everything resolves into a haunting calm — the chaos folding into silence, leaving a lingering sense of transformation.

Kinshasa One Two was made during 5 days of sessions in Kinshasa this summer when the DRC Music collective teamed up with the best of contemporary Congolese musicians and performers. The collective comprises the eclectic production talents of: T-E-E-D (Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs), Dan The Automator, Jneiro Jarel, Richard Russell, Actress, Marc Antoine, Alwest, Remi Kabaka, Rodaidh McDonald and Kwes, with album artwork by Hardy Blechman and Aitor Throup.

For his next release on Soundway Records, Los Angeles-based Dexter Story hooks up with long time friend and compatriot of music, the saxophonist, jazz composer, producer and band-leader Kamasi Washington. A fierce, rumbling electro Ethio-Funk groove provides the platform for an intense and powerful interplay between Washington on tenor sax and Todd Simon on trumpet. 

An instrumental cover version of Tilahun Gessesse's 1970s cut of the same name, it's Story's homage to the oppressed Oromo people of Southern Ethiopia. Backed on the flip by the one cut from Story's 'Wondem' long-player that did not make it to vinyl when the LP version was cut, Nia Andrew's sublime and atmospheric collaboration on Eastern Prayer will keep all those happy who grumbled at it's exclusion from wax first time around. 

This is a record that no lover of Ethio-Jazz, Afro-Beat or Funk should be excused for not owning.

First Word Records is proud to present a new full-length project from Souleance ! Following on from 2013’s acclaimed "La Beat Tape", the Parisian duo return for 2019 with "French Cassette".
As well as the recent single "François / Sète" (both included), we have 25 new tracks dedicated to all things Français. This mixtape opus is a true labour of love; A French voyage through time and genres, as Soulist and FULGEANCE like to do. Each track is purposefully named after various French clichés; characteristics, phrases and places. You’ll excuse our French, and check those out for yourselves..
"French Cassette" is comprised of an array of noises from various French composers; from boogie, to jazz, to sound libraries, to chansons. Cinematically sultry sounds, with a lot of funk; where Brigitte Fontaine meets François de Roubaix in a back alley somewhere near the film set of "Calmos", whilst pumping out the soundtrack to La Haine. 
A little moody, a little sexy, a little rough around the edges.
Whilst the film noir-esque interludes accentuate the theme, Souleance’s unmistakable grooves ride throughout, with a symphony of synths and scratches, beats and basslines. This is undeniably, unashamedly a celebration. Boom bap and breaks, all flavoured with a healthy layer of “je ne sais quoi”.
The first single received love from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Tom Ravenscroft, Jazzanova, Huey Morgan, Bill Brewster, Kev Beadle, Hector Plimmer, Red Rack'em (Rinse FM), Thristian (Worldwide FM) and Chris P Cuts (NTS). Meanwhile, the duo recently spun special sessions for Laid Back and Le Mellotron, as well as their numerous DJ sets and live shows across Europe, and recently self-releasing another mixtape tribute, dedicated to the late great Galt McDermot, and featured on Okayplayer & Radio Nova. The Souleance saga continues. Vive la France!!
