thats a lot of sidechain.  its pumping a lot but then you're taking the kick in and out so much i'm not sure it really fits the track

well produced. great use of reverb and FX synth sounds. the song as a whole feels like it's lacking direction/purpose. great sound though.

I would agree that I don't get much sense of direction in the composition.

I like the combination of tonalities and sound design in this one. Definitely created an intense soundspace and explored it.

the kick seems a little over-present to me in general. - lots of nice things happening on top.

it feels like you had a lot of fun making this track - that's a win!

One Synth Challenge #194: Monolit by BLEASS

Basically I was unable to take part in the Apricot round, so this was my chance. It's based around a 5 beat arpeggio I created with this synth. I thought I might use more of Odin 2, but ended up using it just for the snare.
This track is dedicated to my lovely Jenny who in spite of many current ailments managed to walk several miles of difficult coastal path to get the photo of a waterfall for my cover pic. :)

The Assignment: Create a sonic diary of the past year with a dozen (or more) super-brief segments.

As has become the tradition at the end of each calendar year, this week’s Junto project is a sound journal: a selective audio history of your past 12 months.

Step 1: You will select a different audio element to represent each of the past 12 months of 2024 — or you might opt for even more elements, choosing a segment for each week, or each day, for example. These audio elements will most likely be of music that you have yourself composed and recorded, but they might also consist of phone messages, field recordings, or other source material. These items should be somehow personal in nature, suitable to the autobiographical intention of the project; they should be of your own making, your own devising, and not drawn from third-party sources.

Step 2: You will then select one segment from each of these (most likely) dozen audio elements. If you’re doing a dozen items, one for each month, then five-second segments are recommended, for a total of one minute. Ultimately, though, the length of the segments and of the overall finished track are up to you.

Step 3: Then you will stitch these segments together, equally weighted, in chronological order to form one single track. There should be no overlap or gap between segments; they should simply proceed from one to the next.

Step 4: In the notes field accompanying the track, identify each of the audio segments.

This song took several tries to get to where i want it. Once i fleshed out the idea, i started layering sounds to get a fuller feel for the track and to decorate the space. im particularly proud of the kick which is three active instances of the synth, i crafted the envelopes down to the milisecond and used an oscilliscope to precisely dial in the timing. I had several initial approaches for the kick none of which worked well. I worked a lot on the percussion to get metallic sounds using the FM function of the synth and also using a lot of EQ to peak frequencies. I woulnd say i went full 11/10 but i went 9/10 on EQ. I also used some distortion, to about 8/10. I accentuated sounds but did not completely distroy them. A lot of texture to certain percussion was obtained by layering different sounds at different pitches and also different FM ratios etc. Playing with envelopes goes a long way. 

The bass sounds are all very simple actually and most are a few layers deep with different waveforms FMing at different ratios and pitches. I was gonna go ballistic on the basses and use EQ, clipping and even convolution to obliterated the sound. But to avoid being DQ i opted for the PG 13 version. 

the amount of automation in this project with greater than 100 instances of the synth has made it a chore to navigate. Some midi clips have 6 or 7 layers of automation and other have only one but heavily adjusted everywhere. the automation i used the most is volume. Cutting sounds so they dont interfere with other sounds and to cut reverb tails, and also to shape sounds since i did not like the way the envelopes in the synth itself worked at times. Working with audio clips would have made this much more easy. I do not think i will go this hard for OSC ever again. But then again...it was kinda fun...

The song is clipped and compressed severely. I could have pushed it harder but i did NOT!! in order to preserve that last gasp of dynamic range that was slowly waiting to die. This is not a ballad, or classical, its dubstep - or something like it. 

The song got its name from the distinct digital alarm sound that we're all so familiar with. I used it in the buildup, in the drop, everywhere...

Nothing on the master except Gclip and ReaLimiter.
