MASS MEDIA CONSTANT is a 21st century drum n' bass odyssey for the networked generation. By drawing influence from such sources as LTJ Bukem, Photek, BT, Pendulum, and The Sims, zircon ensures no two tracks sound alike. His signature electro-organic style, developed over the course of four previous breakbeat and trance albums, has morphed and evolved with the fast tempos and scintillating colors found throughout this album. 

As you listen, imagine a scene conceived by the artist during the album's creation - walking through a super-stylized version of Times Square at midnight on a Saturday, looking at all the billboards, bathing in neon light, hearing music coming from bars and restaurants, and watching cars and buses fly by.

Breathing You In [feat. Jillian Aversa]

I've been an avid fan of Street Fighter since my involvement with HD Remix, so you can imagine my delight at the announcement of Super Street Fighter IV. Among the new characters, one just really stood out for me - Hakan! When I first saw his reveal trailer, I was hooked. Everything about him is hilarious and awesome, from his special moves, to his backstory, voice acting, physical appearance, and, of course, his music.

    I got the inspiration for this remix after hearing the OST version of his theme on YouTube. I listened to it a few times over the course of a few days, during which I was coincidentally listening to a lot of Infected Mushroom, perhaps the most famous psytrance group. Inspiration struck at breakfast one morning when I imagined how Hakan's theme would sound with a psytrance beat.

    So, I got to work on the mix and finished it in about three days. I can honestly say working on this was the most fun I've ever had making music. I interspersed my long mix sessions with watching SSFIV videos to keep myself in the zone, and one night was so excited about both my track and the game itself that I could barely sleep, waking up at 6am to continue working.

    As for the musical content of "Time to Oil Up", it's completely over-the-top psytrance. I used a huge ensemble of Middle Eastern and European stringed and wind instruments, world percussion, and custom synth sounds I made from scratch just for this track. I also had a lot of visual imagery in mind while working on it; for example, I imagined the massive drum breakdown at 2:25 to be Hakan or his fans actually playing his giant wooden barrel of oil. The icing on the cake though is the vocal part, provided by my wife Jill. I wrote it out on a synth, pitch bends and all, and was blown away that she completely nailed the Arabic style I had in mind.

    Anyway, I hope this remix puts a smile on your face. I had an absolute blast making it, and can't think of a better way to pay tribute to an amazing game, series and soundtrack, fit for the king of Turkish oil wrestling himself!

Time to Oil Up (SSF4 Hakan's Theme Remix)

My friend and fellow producer PrototypeRaptor called this "cinematic dubstep" when he first heard it. I agree with that genre! I wanted to combine really dark and atmospheric elements reminiscent of monster-infested lava caves on an alien world with heavy dubstep rhythms, beats, wobbles and my own personal flavor. Hope you enjoy the result.

Ashes to Ashes (Super Metroid Lower Norfair Remix)

Quite possibly my most popular remix ever, this one is certainly a fan favorite. I was inspired to remix this theme after hearing another artist’s take on the material as a judge on OCR. It’s such an epic melody and progression that I just wanted to take it to the next level and go over-the-top with suspenseful pads, choir and strings, sound effects and a full orchestra (film score style.) With big beats and heavy guitars, of course. Even though I made this in 2007, I’m very proud of it!

Andrew Aversa (a.k.a. zircon) is an award-winning, covert-ops audio specialist with headquarters located on the outskirts of Baltimore, MD. His top-secret blend of cutting-edge electronic-organic sound design, sonorous composition, and ultra-polished production values have yielded dozens of credits in the realm of video games (Monkey Island 2: Special Edition, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Soulcalibur V), TV (Heroes, Skins, MTV, Touch), film, advertising and other media. As the recording artist zircon, he has written, produced, engineered and collaborated on over 15 albums.

The continuously-expanding array of zircon albums and EPs has met with both critical and popular acclaim – Impulse Prime achieved a dual victory at the 2006 Just Plain Folks Music Awards, winning “Best Techno Album” and the single “Tomorrow” winning “Best Techno Song”. This victory was repeated at the subsequent 2009 JPF Awards, with Antigravity’s “Depth Charge” taking “Best Techno Song” again, as well as the #1 spot of “Best Techno Song of All Time” at Garageband.com.

A lifelong fan of music, film scores and video games, Andrew’s background in music began in classical piano but soon evolved to include computer-based music production shortly before his departure to college. Thanks to this liquid background, Andrew integrates in his music a formidable arsenal of influences ranging from electronic artists like BT, Prodigy, Hybrid and Pendulum to film composers such as James Newton-Howard, Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman and many more.

A true sound-scientist at heart, Andrew is the lead producer and co-founder of Impact Soundworks, a sound design & sample library development company with an enormous list of users all over the world, including some of the most well-known video game, television and film composers in the industry. If he is not designing a new collection of critically-acclaimed instruments for this company, he can be found concocting synthesizer presets which are similarly widely-used.

Andrew is frequently sighted teaching student composers and game developers at Drexel University or otherwise assisting fellow musicians in the fields of production, mastering, and sound design.
