On Tuesday, 2nd November, Kampala-based festival, label and creative platform Nyege Nyege brought electronic sounds from across sub-Saharan Africa directly to Refuge Worldwide.

Founded in 2013 and hosting the Nyege Nyege Festival since 2015, Nyege Nyege illuminates the undercurrents of pan-African contemporary music and promotes a cross-breed of African and European underground dance sensibilities. “Dope underground music, that’s what we’re about. Just dope music,” says Arlen Dilsizian, co-founder of Nyege Nyege Tapes.

In the past decade, Uganda has birthed a growing number of homegrown electronic scenes influenced by traditional sounds such as plucked notes of the Ennanga harp and the fervent drumming of courting dances.

Pleased to share a mix by Berlin-based experimental producer and musician Ziúr, a vital fixture in the city’s rich musical topography.

Driven by a relentless appetite for experimentation, Ziúr has been defying expectations since her early days in punk, hardcore, and metal, eventually carving a path on the fringes of electronic music. For Ziúr, genre is a tool, not a boundary, blending sounds into powerful, unexpected narratives that resonate deeply. Pitchfork aptly dubbed her "a master storyteller," and her acclaimed albums, from 'U Feel Anything?' to 2023's groundbreaking 'Eyeroll', showcase her ability to balance raw abstraction with poignant emotion.
A global force, Ziúr has performed at top venues like NYC's Whitney Museum and Berlin's Volksbühne, and at festivals including Unsound, CTM, and MUTEK. Her live shows, often featuring collaborators like video artist Sander Houtkruijer or choreographer Kiani Del Valle, are as unpredictable as her productions. Whether DJing or performing, she wields sound like a sculptor, constantly pushing the limits of what’s possible.
Currently collaborating with artists like Tarek Atoui and refining her production skills, Ziúr continues to evolve, creating music that’s a vivid crack of light in today’s cultural landscape.

ZIÚR Mix for KUBORAUM

For RA.1000, DJ Sprinkles' first mix in over a decade is a powerful meditation on the genocide in Gaza.

Dance music often relies on simple narratives: release, escape, unity. But those narratives can often feel inadequate, and even at times, hollow. Or, as Terre Thaemlitz might bluntly put it, just "shitty."

For her first mix in around 15 years, Terre Thaemlitz AKA DJ Sprinkles, challenges us to think differently. "I felt this 1000th podcast should reflect the moment in which it was made," she told us in her Q&A.

And what is this moment? Every day since Israel's 2023 assault on Gaza began, an average of 28 children have been killed. That's an entire classroom, every day, for over 600 days (at the time of writing). It's a staggering figure that only captures a fragment of the listless cruelty imposed on the strip.

Faced with such a genocide, what can music really do? How political can it truly be?  For their RA.1000, Thaemlitz gives us an unflinching rebuke to the idea that music should provide escapism. The mix weaves ambient fragments and jazz passages, woven around samples from Israeli media and the voices of outspoken Jewish critics like Gabor Maté and Norman Finkelstein. 

The result is not just a protest, but a document of our time. For Terre Thaemlitz, music is never just music. Her RA.1000 serves as a reminder that in an age of relentless suffering, the most political act is to reject the illusion of escape, and search for something greater.

this mix was commissioned by woofer (https://twitter.com/woofer___) for his bi-weekly streaming show (twitch.tv/woofer___) so massive thx to him for giving me a push to actually record something for a change. it's the first proper planned thing i've done in years.

"femboy heaters" is a chaotic blend of ideas i've been playing with for years at this point. back in around 2002 i started djing with my close friend arash moori in birmingham. we both had wide-ranging tastes and wanted to find a way to represent that musically; we also both struggled with neurological issues. the result was a mix cd we titled "at the left handers disco", a blend of idm, r&b, trip-hop, techno, rap, d&b, ambient and noise. we handed out copies to all the bars and clubs we knew in birmingham and they truly hated it. they were just looking for the perfect soundtrack to accompany the merciless gentrification of the uk's ailing second city.

since then i've been mostly flirting with similar ideas, sometimes less obviously, sometimes more aggressively. i eventually had a regular night in birmingham (with arash, and other friends) where we focused more on softer, more "playable" electronic music; when i moved to the usa i ran a night called spectral rehab in boston which went back to pure eclectic mashed up noise-bass weirdness; eventually i became part of DRAW, a local club-focused afterhours party. now i'm in berlin.

over quarantine i've had the opportunity to fuck with multiple cdjs a few times, sharing ideas and absorbing inspiration from friends. this mix is a celebration of ideas i've had for ages (i've clanged the miley x autechre blend so many times it's not even funny) and a few i figured out only a couple of weeks ago. it's a massive thank u to old collaborators and new and to those ppl around me who allow me to feel whole, without having to hide any of the spikes or cracks. i love u.

the mix is an accompaniment to my forthcoming split tape with my lovely housemate jake muir for boomkat's "documenting sound" series. both feature dialog elements from todd haynes' 1995 movie "safe" cuz im a nerd :)
