Happy Africa Day! 

Today's Suncloud podcast is between Zimbabwean Sunbox Ambassador Buli Mguni and the leading actress Tendaiishe Chitima of Cook Off, a homegrown Zimbabwean feature film that has been acquired by Netflix and will available from June 1st on the streaming platform. 

Cook Off is an unlikely feel-good Zimbabwean story that follows the journey of Anesu, a down-on-her-luck single mother from Harare’s Budiriro township. Anesu becomes a national sensation after she qualifies for Zimbabwe’s top reality TV cooking show, but soon finds herself out of her depth battling against professional chefs. It features rising star Tendaiishe ‘Tendie’ Chitima, popular rapper Tehn Diamond and the much-beloved ‘Neria’ star Jesesi Mungoshi as the grandmother, as well as a host of other familiar faces – and was made against the odds, on a tiny budget. The filmmakers behind Cook Off were trying to restart a once-proud film industry in Zimbabwe that had declined over decades of political and economic turmoil.

This week's #FilmmakerFridays episode happened to coincide with the release week of Cook Off on Netflix. This low budget Zimbabwean film starring Tendai Chitima as Anesu- a single mother entered into a cooking contest that turns her life upside down- has broken barriers and spreads the positive message of African cinema across the globe. In the episode, our Zimbabwean Sunbox Ambassador Buli Mguni interviews Thomas Brickhill, the director of the movie. They discuss the inspirations and processes behind the making of the film and the challenges faced by the Zimbabwean film industry.

Making Films in Zimbabwe  Bulisile Mgunie Interviews Tomas Brickhill

Contemporary Kenyan artworks, for some time the interest of the niche collector, arrived onto the international art scene with a bang this week, courtesy of a charity sale at leading London auction house Bonhams. Monday night’s sale   of works from eight contemporary artists in Kenya raised more than £20,000 for arts education initiatives in the country, while attracting a wide range of collectors keen to acquire pieces from the region. From Nairobi, Zoe Flood reports on the emerging East African art market, with additional reporting from Emma Greatorex at the auction in London.
