John 00 Fleming @ Luminosity Beach Festival 2024

In this episode, we shift gears towards the trancey soundscapes I promised last time. Trance is one of the most diverse music genres, spanning many different sub-genres and styles. Today, I'd like to highlight a specific, emerging sound that is fast-paced, heads-down, and sits somewhere between early 90s trance and the psychedelic scene. We call it Raw Trance, and this is where the most forward-thinking and underground trance currently is, in my opinion. Enjoy!

No heart is a stone unburned. Even the darkest soul must know of the light — to confront it, to reckon with it. In passing through time, the shadows cast by the light change shape and direction. They dart out in front, skew their strange angles, and creep up behind.
Once, the light felt like a distant echo in the past, a wan energy barely able to penetrate the fog of the present. But behold the threshold and the new shadows cast as you pass through it. The light on the other side feels different — cast in viridian, heralding change, growth, but not yet warm.

The archway is cast in fluorite. Old expectations refract and splinter — prismatic illusions that struggle to form the forgotten self-image. The negative space which opens up around aches with new possibilities. Ambiguous outcomes inspire cryptic emotions — where once there was only resistance, now comes fragility. Lessons reveal themselves in unknowable shapes, every step another evolution of the shadow self.
The latest single from I Hate Models heralds a new chapter, shedding old habits and embracing a broader emotional palette without losing the fierce momentum of his thunderous, maverick techno.

Last month, Beatport asked me to make a chart to show my favourite releases over the last year, and I mentioned on last month’s show that it would be a good idea to let one of you make a mix of the chart for me to play this month. I’m really enjoying this time away from my usual manic tour life — it’s giving me space to re-energise, reset, and reflect on where I want to be musically. I’ve been hunting for new music, discovering fresh artists and labels, and reconnecting with the sounds that inspire me.
I also spent some time listening back to old mixes of mine — BBC Radio 1 Essential Mixes and more — and it reminded me just how deeply rooted Deep Hypnotic Trance is in my journey.
