The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

Lead singer of award-winning band Bloc Party and DJ/Producer Kele Okereke has announced a new EP of original productions on Crosstown Rebels in November. Out on vinyl on the 25th November and available on Beatport on the 9th December, the new ‘Heartbreaker EP’ from Kele Okereke features four tracks which display his love for underground electronic dance music.

The first track from the EP, eponymous ‘Heartbreaker’ shows Kele’s UK Garage influences, and features vocals from Bobbie Gordon. ‘God Has A Way’ features old school house chord stabs, more uplifting guest vocals and a driving rhythm, whereas ‘Get Up’ provides a sparser, deeper atmosphere and is the only track to feature Kele himself on vocals. The EP also features a remix of lead single ‘Heartbreaker’ by much respected Berlin based techno artist, Recondite. Kele Okereke's first two solo EPs, under the artist name 'Kele', pushed the envelope of his electronic production standards. 'Heartbreaker' continues to further the dance-floor trajectory introduced on aforementioned 'The Boxer' and 'The Hunter' EP's.

From Bloc Party’s Platinum-selling debut album to Okereke’s guest vocals for artists like The Chemical Brothers, dance music has always been the underlying influence for Kele: “I’ve always loved the inclusive and spiritual nature of house music, so the opportunity to make music for the most iconic and influential house music label in the UK is a dream come true for me.” Having spent ten years making records in studios working with some of the greatest producers in the world, Kele now feels he knows how to make music that he wants to hear.

“When I first met Jean Michel LaPointe (my creative partner) in Tarzana, Inspector Jack was one of the first songs produced at the legendary studio. We are both avid fans of classic movies from the 60s through 90s and me, being a huge fan ofInspector Gadget (growing Up watching it as a kid in Farsi). 
We thought it would be cool to produce a song that felt like it had the energy and gave a wild cinematic energy in the most organic way possible. Jean Michelle laid down an amazing Bassline and we thought why not add more layers to the Bassline like top notes. And then we were like, why not hire a whole brass quartet with the Bassline?? So we got the amazing Brandyn Phillips Brass Quartet to come in and we recorded them playing the bass line. Having real instruments was a game changer and something I had not done in this caliber, we really went full Lawrence of Arabia on this one.
