Everything changed following the deployment of TRACERs - Cerebral Transactivation Circuits. These systems leveraged partial neural mapping to synthetically induce REM states (interspersed with semi-lucid waking phases) in test subjects, thus preserving cognitive function during cryosleep. But developments soon took a turn, as with sufficient mapping density, they were able to reliably predict behavioral responses, decision pathways, and motor actions...in several instances, BEFORE the subject became consciously aware of them.

A sense of dread washed over. If thought can be predicted before it occurs, what room is left for agency? What does free will mean if every action is already accounted for?
