Upzet - Out of Mind (11-2014)

An intense journey through rolling chasms and the demonstration of colossal technical capabilities, this album from June Miller proves their ‘Ups & Downs’ EP was only served as an entree. 

Bart and Mark have a musical depth which spans throughout their lifetimes. With backgrounds influenced heavily by a range of genres and having played in an array of spaces, they break every prototype and this has become apparent with each output since their signing to the Ram imprint. ‘Robots & Romans’ is no different; it completely immerses you with its vastly intricate soundscape, from the beginning second.

A listening experience which totally engrosses you, ‘Robots & Romans’ takes you further than the typical album format. Each track leads methodically to the next. From the cinematic climaxes of ‘Brace’, to the beautifully woven composition of Hannah Lux’s vocals against the arpeggios of ‘We Are Not Human’, its diversity encompasses every corner of music’s spectrum. 

And title-track ‘Robots & Romans’ is the embodiment of what this album represents. With sonic atmospherics setting a musical scene which stretches into a crescendo, one powered forward throughout the rest of the album, each break is pent-up with steroid like aggression. June Miller are exposing the darker underbelly of their production… Infusing classical drum elements which leaves the album with a resounding impact. Even within those first few minutes.

June Miller also reintroduce you to one of the tectonic slabs of bass unleashed on us earlier this year. With the pivotal collaboration with Mefjus, as well as guest appearance from MC collective Virus Syndicate, who’ve made their intimidating northern rasp renowned by featuring on some of the biggest bass track since the early 2000s, the talent pool is endlessly deep. 

So familiarise yourself with June Miller’s vast repertoire. As they’re biggest work of art to date, this presents a fundamental turning point. There’s no denying this album’s titanic weight within the dance world’s realms; but it also marks June Miller’s rise to legendary status.

Logam’s Atlanta-based Santoku Records return for their thirteenth release which includes a remix and an original track. On SAN013, you’ll find the Gridlok remix of Mayhem & Logam’s “All I Do”, and “Transfixed” by newcomers Mean Teeth. 

Gridlok is a name that is widely known around the drum & bass universe, with a long and established career at the controls. Over the course of the last ten-plus years, he has contributed hits like ‘Moodswings, Bottomfeeder, and Standing Room Only. Here, he goes in on All I Do, taking this Mayhem & Logam head nodder and giving it the classic Gridlok feel. 

The remix draws you immediately into another world, atmospheric synths and sharp electronics fill the screen, before a rolling, bubbling beat drops down from the sky. From the beginning, Gridlok has added in his signature sound and this particular remix ticks all the boxes of a ‘banger’ with thumping beats and a nasty and determined bassline. Touches of melody fill the tune out, giving the track a nice contrasting sound and feel. 

The duo Mean Teeth hail from Estonia, who are building a name with their dark, industrial vibes and innate sense of rhythm. Here, on Transfixed, they bring their entire a-game. Punchy drums...  more

The depth of the forest was unknown to those who lived at its verge. Shadows cast from the dense canopy seemed to reach out towards those who passed close by, wisps of darkness unfurling and twisting around the limbs of the youngest that dared to play at its sinister edge. The oldest stories of its roots passed across the creaking voices of the town pensioners hunched in the safety of others, discretely whispered and shot through with fearful looks. The allure of that dense and ancient place stretched back eternal, and bitter consequence waited for those who breached its dark heart.  The crew ignored the nonsense of such crones, pulling the carts of equipment under the cover of dusk until the sounds of the town were but a memory. The speaker stacks were raised against the night, strings of lights hung between the trees and purity of disturbed bass rolled against the surrounding trunks as they disentangled themselves from the mundane fiber of the lives they left behind. Twisting against one another as they let flood serotonin delight, they ignited an orgy of sonic symbiosis as the rave found its wings and took flight. The spores drifted imperceptibly into the clearing from the darkness around, lodging without discomfort in the eyes, ears and noses of the gathered young. And then the screaming started, the undulating mass of the gathering turned inward… devouring itself as limbs were separated from bodies, necks ripped as skin tore loose and the blood flowed freely over the gnashing faces of those left alive at the KILL PARTY… 
  
GYDRA return to EATBRAIN in force, following up their well-received CYBORG EP with the dynamic, darkly driven but funk-laced assault of the KILL PARTY EP. From the old-school drenched piano and ultrafunk of the title track, to the playful sinister intent of PRIMITIVE INSTINCT, the filthy sub explorations of PROBLEM and the predatory sensibilities of IKRA – the 4 tracks within display the dynamic and exploratory character of the production outfit. This is Russian neurofunk at its finest, delivered on the platform that’s tailored exactly to the premiere kinetic nature of its content.

BLACKOUT make a bold statement with their 50th release, in the form of an intricate and carefully poised pair of blinding tunes from RIDO with SAY IT LOUD and LIAR (feat. Optiv). The mournful but epic tone of the title track, SAY IT LOUD is laced with a powerful oldschool rave sensibility both in the vocals that lead it, and the choice of lowkey frenetic breaks. But once it drops it opens out with an entirely modern and colourful, heavy stride. LIAR opens with an understated and warm tone, infused with a retrofuturistic glow coated in futurist suspense. The fast-paced, minimal breaks upon which it rides are interspersed with lean swathes of distortion and punctuated by the filtered beauty of its lead, arranged with a keen sense of suspense and unleashed energy. 

SAY IT LOUD and LIAR stand as a pair of tracks with both absolutely current but timeless sensibility, resulting in a staggeringly effective pair of bangers that will certainly be powering the dance for some time to come.
