Disquiet Junto Project 0471: Phase Transition

"Boxes" is my tenth yearly Disquiet Junto recording of ice in a glass and making something of it.

This year, I used some ice from my driveway in a small glass.  The rattling was recorded by my old Zoom H2, run through my new Empress Echosystem on some setting, and then sent over to my Empress Reverb for further processing, and out to my Tascam DR-05.

I was rattling it in one hand and "live tweaking" settings with the other.  I don't know what selections I was using on either box for this recording.  I made quite a few short variations, but I liked this one the most as it starts out super muted and ends with a recognizable sound.

The Empress boxes are outstanding.  I've had the Reverb for a little over two years and can't imagine making sounds without it.  I'll never sell it.  I got the Echosystem recently, and the two together are something else.

Orange Man Circles The Drain (disquiet0471)

This is made from snippets of a one minute sample of ice in a glass. Though some effects are applied all sounds are included as sampled (with minor EQ in mix) and represent the original material fairly faithfully. The result is purely rhythmic and textural rather than containing any melody or harmony.

The Assignment: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something with it.

Darling (disquiet0471)

I recorded this track with a square glass vase and two Geofóns suction cupped onto it, and also the X/Y mic that came with the Zoom H6. I cut the resulting LR sounds from the Zoom mic into a lot of varying pieces and made some bass booms from the Geofón ice hits.

The results are assembled on a 4/4 120 bpm tempo grid in Pro Tools. I added some Valhalla Delay, here and there and a bit of Adaptiverb on the outro. Fabfilter Pro-Q 3 and Pro-C 2 on mastering duties.

I almost never do anything rhythmic, so this is kind of a first attempt at creating a fun beat, while featuring some of the typical ice in glass sounds I captured. Also the first time I've used the Geofóns. The cable handling noise is big, so moving the glass vase was not good on those mics, but helped get some nice movement on the X/Y mic.

This is a remix of Disquiet Junto piece Policing the Dock ([https://soundcloud.com/zoundsabar/policing-the-dock-disquiet0474]), an asynchronous collaboration by Zoundsabar ([https://soundcloud.com/zoundsabar/]), Chaonaut ([https://soundcloud.com/chaonaut]) and Dave Gibbs ([https://soundcloud.com/david-l-gibbs])

First I extracted four-bar loops from the original source. Second, I treated them in the Kontakt Ensemble „Cycles“  from Slater & Ash, which is perfect if you want pulses that can go on a grid. Third it was arranging way many bits and finding some parts that could form a melody, which took at the longest. Lastly I added two shakers and some simple drums. 

Normally, it would sit there for a week, but as it’s the Disquiet Junto, the piece has to go tonight. Oh, and the intro reminded me of the chase sequence in detective story, hence the name.

**Disquiet Junto Project 0475: Low End (4 of 3)**

The Assignment: Remix a trio by doing forensics on its component parts.

Step 1: This week will involve remixing. The past three weeks, we’ve produced a large number of trios. These have been the result of a sequence of steps: first someone made a solo, then someone else turned it into a duet, and then someone else added a third element, making a completed work in the form of a trio. This week you will be remixing one of these trios, which you will source from the previous week’s Junto project (disquiet.com/0475).

Step 2: First, you must select the piece of music you will remixing. There are over 65 tracks in all to choose from, 62 as part of this playlist:

To select a track, you can listen through all that (warning: it’s a lot) and choose one, or you can use a random number generator. (Note: it’s fine if more than one person uses the same original track as the basis for their piece.)

Step 3: The simply stated goal is to remix the trio resulting from your selection process in Step 2. However, it is strongly encouraged that you locate the duet and the solo on which the trio is founded, and that you then employ those three tracks in your work. (In past projects like this one, some musicians have essentially extracted the other half of the duet by “removing” the solo from it, and done the same with the trio versus the duet.)

Step 4: As with last week, you can contribute more than one track this week. You can do up to two total. If you choose to do a second, you should preferably try to use a duet track that no one else has used yet. The goal is for many as people as possible to benefit from the experience of being part of an asynchronous collaboration. After a lot of detailed instruction, that is the spirit of this project.

Chase At The Docks [disquiet0475]

Disquiet Junto Project 0475: Low End (4 of 3). The Assignment: Remix a trio by doing forensics on its component parts.

When I heard some results from disquiet0472, I had instantly some favourites, but choose to go on with a RNG track. This time I ignored some rules by going back to the tracks from disquiet0472, where I had considered to build on https://soundcloud.com/noimspartacus/orphaned-loop-disquiet0472?in=disquiet/sets/disquiet-junto-project-0472 (very minimalistic) and https://soundcloud.com/k-blamo/recording93disquiet0472 (just awesome), and by accident I this time stumbled upon https://soundcloud.com/anotherbenjamin/disquiet0472-paper-jam?in=disquiet/sets/disquiet-junto-project-0472 (great theme).

All sound sources come from these three tracks.  I started with cutting out loops, went on to looping in Ableton, exported to stems and mixed in reaper. I was not pleased with the harmonica loop from Ableton (all loops were triggered by probabilities) and remixed the cutouts in GleetchlabX and added the results. Then I added the usual reverbs and fx.

Solitary Statics [disquiet0478]

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications.
