I realized one day how the old MIDI music back then is quite easily reproducible, especially with the advanced programs and plugins we have these days, so I decided to revamp an old favorite of mine by whipping up a note-for-note transcription of Frank Zappa's song, "Night School," from his album "Jazz from Hell" done entirely by ear. It was fun!

The most challenging part about the making of this mix was writing out the kick drum rhythms, actually. Apparently, there is no discernible pattern at all, so I had to repeatedly stop and start and stop and start over and over and over again for pretty much the whole song writing out the same kick drum note. I felt like I was bench-pressing 250 on my ears!

Night School (Frank Zappa Transcription)

A Chamber piece commissioned by my momma. Motifs based on fragments of the melody to the song "Cheer Up, Charlie", from the movie, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".

Cheer Up, Everybody - Trio for Clarinet, Bassoon, and Double Bass

This is a song about a small-sized cult worshiping a deity with a shiny box of radioactive french-fries as a head, a bat-wing and chicken leg for wings, an intercom speaker speaking a bunch of jibberish including the latin word for "drink" (in verb-form) as its right hand, a snow globe in its left hand, and a face on a plate residing in its lap. The french fries' extremely intense radioactivity levels are high enough for them to appear as a boxed group of mortuous, luminous fish-fries.

     It is imperative for everyone in this cult to wear their hair as a mohawk and kneel before the deity with all of their hands in the air except for the leader of the cult, and the monksoors. The leader of the cult is required to dress like a lumberjack and offer a shovel in a small basket to the deity with a banana-esque hat on, lying down with his legs raised five inches-or-so above the ground with a stool. The monksoors, the ones that are in the togas, are demanded to put their arms in an awkward, angular position balancing a snorkel mask on a plate on top of his/or her respective heads. The leading monksoor has the honor to shoot laser beams from his eyes to clean up the puddle of orange juice spilled "accidentally" from a bucket in the hands of a kneeling cult-member to create a multitude of undecidedly descriptive vapors in order to conjure the deity's awareness to accept the offering of the shovel. 

     After many hours of the cult's duties, the radioactive-french-fry-box-headed deity at last makes a response in the form of a question. "Would you like to subscribe?" asks the deity, and the leading monksoor, according to the many years of preparation for this very part of the ceremony, answers "I would!"  and the deity at last takes the cult-leader's offering by means of it's psycic powers, and feeds it to the radioactive french-fries in the likeness of radioactive fish-fries because of it's extremely high radioactivity levels, that reside in their box.

Here is the story on how Zovos came to be:

Before or after time, there came a light that came on with a bang. That light exposed a tower of large, golden, unorderly-stacked blocks scraping the sky. Shortly afterwards, a cosmic vacuum of the unknown came into existence at the very top of the tower. It's forces caused the tower of golden blocks to tumble down in a chaotic frenzy. Somehow, by pure chance, all of the blocks came together to form a stone head of many colors. The stone head eventually started to gleam magnificently and resonate a very low E-flat. After all of the initial splendor, the stone head then transformed into a cosmic being. The first thing this being said was
"I am here, here am I, I am Zovos."

Zovos now is telling all of his stories through all forms of art for everyone to enjoy.
