Mix of the Week #559: Feeling the Breeze (Part 3)

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I've been collecting records since my mid-twenties. I studied visual communication at Bauhaus in Weimar and noticed over the years how I couldn't keep my focus on just visual things, but it constantly shifted to sound. I took classes in audio engineering, volunteered at the student radio and even went to lectures at HFM Weimar (Hochschule Für Musik). I always sneaked audio topics into my projects. I bought most of my first records during my exchange semester in Milwaukee. I was totally into US Jazz-Funk, Boogie and Disco, that was in 2011. When I left Milwaukee after 4 months I had to leave back quite some clothes and other stuff, because I had bought too many records that I wanted to bring home. Anyway – from that time on I collected my way through a lot of genres and countries, like NDW & Austro Pop, Hispanic & Latin-American Synth-Pop & Disco, Italo and Italian disco-funk 7"s, Amiga, Melodija & Yugoton Stuff, but also records from Hong Kong, Korea and Japan.    

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

7" records are pretty straight-forward. In most cases they only have two songs. An A side and a B side – and usually only one is the "hit". So whether I bought it for the hit or the odd b-side, when I flip through my 7-inch case at a gig, it's super easy to remember what the song is and I don't have to skip through an LP or even worse a compilation. Most compilations that I bring to gigs I don't touch them at all because it's so hard to remember what's on there and if it's on the A, B, C or D side. Also the handling of a 7" is a bit different, there is not much room to touch when cueing them. I used those giant 7" adapters in the beginning but I noticed their heavy weight changes the speed when you drop the record in, so I got rid of them. Once you get used to playing 7"s and how they react when you speed them up or slow them down, it's so much fun to play them. Your set will be more dynamic. 

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

Sure. I picked some dark minimal wave, italo and synth-pop records for the beginning. Possibly my way of dealing with the dark winter mood, the shitty political situation that we're in and all the cruel things that are happening in the world. But then there is a turning point and Little Big Man sings "I'm Gonna Fight" – after that there's some lo-fi dubby instrumentals that blend into breaky 80s electro funk. I sneaked in Electric Beat Crew "Here We Come" – probably the only western-influenced electronic/hip hop combo on the GDR state label AMIGA as a little hint of where I'm coming from. The middle part is a pretty eclectic mix from 80s synth-pop, lofi-electro, early 90s house and freestyle. At minute 45 I'm playing the only contemporary record in this mix (from 2019) "Lovlee Dae" by DJ Tabledance, which is like a UK-bassy coverversion of the S.O.U.L.  S.Y.S.T.E.M.'s 1992 hit. Then more odd early 90s tunes like the Austrian Pyramid Orchestra with "Kult & Magie" until I'm playing my personal highlight Jennifer Carmina "Balla Con Me" – a 7" that I currently fixed because it was pressed off-centered and sounded terrible. My approach was finding music that you wouldn't expect on 7" and it turned out quite fun.

4) Where can people catch you / listen to your music? 

You can catch me in my hometown in Berlin once a month, but also europe-wide. I'll be playing in Italy next weekend and going to Istanbul in January. With my partner Hendrik I've got plans for an Asia tour next year.
