Historic Armenia was a land of many rivers. In the village of Moush there are two brides who swim in the river and rise to the shores, shimmering like pomegranate seeds. In the fields, a man rides down to fetch his love and enter the waters. In the village of Moush there are two rivers, one Murad and one Meghraked, which flow down and join in the river Yeprad, (the Euphrates).

It offers us a meditation on the idea of shared earth and common ground. “Behind our house, behind your house, are fields of sweet clover. We harvest barley from the mountain Arnos, which we trade for red apples to mark our wedding day."

Zulal Armenian A Cappella Folk Trio

In Armenian, Zulal means “clear water.” Zulal, the a cappella trio, aims to create music that is like clear water—fluid, clean and unconfined. The group takes Armenia’s village folk melodies and weaves intricate arrangements that pay tribute to the rural roots of the music while introducing a sophisticated lyricism and energy.

Zulal’s singers, Teni Apelian, Yeraz Markarian and Anaïs Tekerian have been singing together since 2002. The trio has performed in such esteemed venues as the Getty Museum, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, New York’s Symphony Space and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts along with performances for Cirque du Soleil, the Near East Foundation and the Silk Road Project.
