Composed as a quintet for woodwind, strings, and piano, Harvest is distinctively “Chinese” sounding including active rhythm, recognizable melodic ideas featuring pentatonic scales and modes. It is a flavorful and coherent synthesis of East Asian elements with a Western musical twist.

When collaborating with tuba player Austin Glenn, the idea of metal being both industrial and organic inspires me to compose a piece for tuba and electronics. I was drawn from different types of sound made from metal processing when I visited the metal fabrication studio in 3D Art Annex at Texas Tech University, where I recorded a collection of sound including metal cutting, polishing, even sound of simple dropping of a piece of metal sheet. With the help of Adobe Audition software, I was able to process these sounds such as adding pitches, putting different filters on top, and eventually collage them into a single track as the fixed media playback in accompanying the tuba. It embodies being metrical and improvisatory, mechanical with freedom. Special thanks to Professor William Cannings for his allowance of me visiting his metal fabrication studio and recording all the sounds.

Yucheng “Alex” Zhang’s compositions have been performed and recorded throughout U.S. and China by various ensembles including Illinois Modern Ensemble, Texas Tech University Symphony Orchestra, University of Northern Colorado Chamber Choir, Linfield Concert Choir, L’abri Trio, Music&Friends Chamber Ensemble, Duo Zonda, Durations Trio, as well as features with Charlotte New Music Festival, North American Saxophone Alliance Biannual Conference, Atlantic Music Festival, and NYC Contemporary Music Salon. Originally from Chengdu, China, he is currently a faculty member of East Tennessee State University, teaching music theory and composition. Before moving to Tennessee, Alex was a faculty member of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign School of Music as a lecturer in composition-theory; he served as the music theory Graduate Part-Time Instructor of record at Texas Tech and a faculty member at Texas Tech University Band and Orchestra Camp. He also served as president of the Society of Composers Inc at Texas Tech chapter.
