After the success of Memoria, La Rito and Magupi join forces to give something back to the community. They create Mayahuasca, a downtempo groovy tool offered as a free download. In this track that is La Rito's first adventure below 100 bpm, they explore the banjo of Tzen Tze Re Rei with hints of the original vocal, parts of a documentary about Ayahuasca and Magupi's brilliant jams on the marimba and the keyboard. A Macaca & Peter Power - Alma Da Terra

Shika Shika - the record label without borders or owners - celebrates its first physical format release with ALBURA, the new album of Barrio Lindo, available as a 12” limited edition and in digital format on April 6th.
ALBURA is a portrait of the last three years of touring through Latin America, USA and Europe, that inspired this new phase in the work of Agustín Rivaldo, producer, luthier, and co- founder of Shika Shika Collective.
With its 12 tracks, ALBURA invites the listener to go on a deep and fresh journey into the contemporary sound of Latin American music, accompanied by organic electronica. In the midst of cumbias, sambas, carnavales and folkloric melodies, this record includes collaborations with indispensable referents of the new wave of South American producers who have crossed paths with Barrio Lindo: Jhon Montoya, Ela Minus, Lulacruza, Clara Trucco a.k.a. Wende Wen (Fémina/Weste) y Carrot Green.
This album merges the two universes that coexist in Agustín Rivaldo: the role of producer and the role of a luthier dedicated to traditional South American instruments. In fact, the name ALBURA is a botanical nod to the youngest part of the wood of a tree, and where the most recent growth rings of the trunk are found, at the same time a vital part for luthiers.
During the production process, Rivaldo recorded with instruments that he made himself: charangos, guitars, quenas and marimbas, among others. On the songs Pura danza, Saudade and Intensidad mañanera he uses his own singing voice.

The traditional dance is a representation of the colonization days where the Spanish conquerors (represented  with bulls masks) chase the indigenous who wears the handcrafted devil masks.

The day before the celebration, at midnight, bombs are thrown into the air announcing the birth, that is, the birth of the little devils. These begin their journey in the hill Brugrá, in Boruca, or in the hill of King Curré, according to the town where the festival takes place. The little devils sing a traditional song called saloma and they sound snails of cambute and horns, after which they pass from house to house, where they are greeted with chicha and meals, while they continue to sing and dance intertwined with their arms to the rhythm of the music.

The morning of the celebration, the bull appears, whose objective is to kill the little devils. They face him led by the Elder Devil, in three contests throughout the day, during the three days of the celebration. These contests are trips around the community: the bull attacks the devils to throw them to the ground, where they can even break the mask. On the part of the little devils, the essential idea of ​​the game is to face the bull and provoke it. Finally, the bull defeats and kills the little devils, symbol of the Spanish victory during the conquest. The last to fall is always the Greater Devil, who represents the cacique. All the little devils are lying on the ground, an act that is known as the Tomb, which takes place on the last day of the party. After this, the bull flees and takes refuge in the mountain, after which, the Greater Devil sounds a snail and returns the life to the devils (in what is known as the Diabla), who go out to look for the bull. When he is finally found, he appears dressed in leaves and branches, and furiously tries to kill the little devils again. They defeat the bull and sacrifice it in a bonfire. The death of the bull is repeated several times throughout the day. The "corpse" of the burning bull is paraded by the community, and its pieces are sold or given symbolically to the attendees, representing their flesh, while the chicha represents their blood. Finally, his remains are burned in a bonfire, and a great party is celebrated celebrating the victory of the little devils over the bull.

Nacimiento de los Diablitos

An interest in ancestral Latin American cosmology has always run right through the music of Ecuadorian music producer Nicola Cruz. His creative process involves an attentive, careful search for the living roots and rituals that are part of South American identity—its Andean and African origins in particular—valuing its rhythms, its oral traditions, its instruments and the energy they transmit. His first record, Prender el Alma (2015) explored the development of the consciousness and spirituality, and how they connect with music. In Siku, his most recent production, Cruz continues this exploration, expanding his vision towards new stories and other cultures as sources of inspiration. A crucial aspect on this journey is his collaboration with other artists from around the world.

The siku is a wind instrument of Andean origin, highly symbolic in ancestral rituals, made up of two separate, complementary parts, the arca and the ira. It is a representation of duality, an essential element of the indigenous world view, associated with involvement and complementarity, far from the binary thinking typical of western societies. That duality is reflected on this record in the coming together of sounds, whether electronic or organic, past or present, local or global. On Siku, Nicola Cruz combines instruments with symbolic, spiritual connotations, such as the sitar, the siku, and the balafon with hints of electronica. Studies of the samba, cumbia and rhythms of African, Andean and Hindu origin are combined with Cruz’s characteristically unpredictable, mystical style.

"Ramas" (branches in Spanish) is El Búho’s third album of original material and stands for a celebration of the art of collaboration. Featuring 19 collaborations with artists from 12 countries, the album was born organically out of collaborations, mutual appreciation or a desire to experiment and try something new. 

Some of the tracks were started in person, such as "Sky City", born out of a spaghetti-western jam in Thornato’s Queens studio or "Gaviota" inspired by the the seagulls of Brighton following a shared show with Rumbo Tumba in the city. Meanwhile others such as "Elefta" with Hungarian producer Stas or "Kuuma" a track made with Finnish multi-instrumentalist QOSQI were created over long-distance with the producers never actually meeting face to face. The album also contains tracks from long-term friends and collaborators like Chancha Via Circuito, Barda and Wonderwheel head-honcho Nickodemus. 

Musically the album references the blend of Latin American traditional music with original electronic music on tracks such as "Resiliencia" with legendary Chilean producer DJ Raff, an homage to the recent protest movement in Chile, or "Absolut," a track sculpted from an unfinished melodic idea by Argentine electro-folk trio Tremor. Meanwhile songs like "Nevar" and "Kif Kif Kuf Kuf" with Didacte and Kraut, both part of the Shika Shika collective, take El Búho’s sound in a new direction, embracing a more melodic or impactful and rhythmic electronica. 

At its heart of "Ramas" was Perkins’ desire to challenge himself creatively, forcing him to see his own ideas and production style from a different angle or see ideas started in one direction come back completely transformed by the collaborator. The result is at once surprising and diverse but El Búho’s signature sound and aesthetic is the thread that runs through all of the tracks, the trunk to each branch. 

Carrying on the spirit of collaboration, El Búho made an open call for collaborations with dancers & choreographers in his community. Overwhelmed by the response, the album is accompanied by 18 original choreographies by dancers and dance groups from 12 different countries, from Mexico to Taiwan, South Africa or the Galapagos Islands. Each chose the track that most inspired them and shot a video of their dance in a unique and beautiful natural location, in doing so creating yet more ramas or branches for the project.

El Búho x Alex Hentze - Amanueces del Espíritu (feat. Dominique Hunziker)

An argentinean producer/luthier and a British producer/environmental activist joined by the love of traditional music and slow electronics, under the premise of “music without borders”. This led to the birth of the Shika Shika collective some five years ago but also their collaborative project, HIstory of Colour.
Since 2013, Agustin Rivaldo (Barrio Lindo) and Robin Perkins (El Búho) been working together under the premise of finding and tuning their crossover sound as History of Colour.
After the unexpected success of their last EP “ Calidoso”, History of Colour is back to present their debut album, “Antumbra”.

These two producers, who have each made a name for themselves in the Latin American downtempo electronica scene, have been slow-roasting this eight instrumental track release for the past two years. Since they started to collaborate, their creative processes have always been done remotely. Though this album started like this, they took the opportunity to come together in person for different sessions.

On the album the duo explore a new path, one that envelops the essence of their South American musical inspirations with darkly happy melodies and psychedelic arpeggios. Featuring German talent M.RUX, frequent Shika Shika collaborator, and Portuguese composer MaguPi, “Antumbra” writes the next chapter of this musical brotherhood.

Shika Shika Collective will also release the project that encapsulates the beginnings of the collective on vinyl for the first time.

Márcio Pinto aka Magupi, is a talented 
multi-instrumentalist and composer, 
equiped with a degree in Classical Studies, 
specialized in the marimba, balafon and 
african percussion. He taught masterclass 
level at the renowned Oporto Music 
University and played in a number of 
World Music bands and orchestras 
including Oporto Symphonic Orchestra. 
Magupi also spent a lot of time in West 
Africa learning from his masters and 
drinking inspiration, rhythms and sounds. 
He integrates his classical, afro and 
electronic knowledge into his live sets, 
playing the electro-acoustic marimba with 
a diverse aray of tracks widely influenced 
by music around the world, with organic, 
deep and unique elements. 
Magupi sets have varied from afternoon
acoustic ambience to late night dance 
floor bangers, igniting each scenario with 
his magnetic energy and sound!
