It’s right that Brooklyn trio Zs should release this EP as a double 7" - all of the music contained therein is equally quixotic and unconventional. Ian Antonio’s drums avoid fixed rhythms but also bypass the usual freeform techniques, alternating between a skeletal rattle and a low burbling on the toms. Sam Hilmer’s tenor saxophone chases its tail in hypnotic circles and then leaps up into a stuttering Morse code of broken yelps. Ben Greenberg’s electric guitar darts from scratchy undergrowth to tumbling phrases with a hint of Group Doueh’s fragrant desert blooms. And where you’d expect to find a bass, there’s the constant glowering of a subsonic rumble, lending the whole date a creeping, nervous tension. If only it lasted longer than a quarter of an hour.

"There may be always be a Freudian uncanniness to whatever ethnology Zs music may conjure – calling to question if thinking about their music in relation to other cultures is some sort of unconscious method of globalization – but what are we to do with their mess of scraps and bones, their usable trim? What are we to make of when out of nowhere – and in typical Zs fashion – the music ends abruptly, offering no crescendo, no dal segno, no da capo, no cadence into the ultimate, sweeping, and uplifting final chords played fortissimo? What kind of wankery is this, that they don't even care to at least give us a proper studio fade-out?"
