“Nor Heights, Nor Depths” can be epitomized by a single image: a deep sea beneath a vast, open sky. On the surface, this piece can be viewed as a simple exploration of the orchestra’s extreme ranges to illustrate the physicality of this specific image. While this piece does musically fulfill this particular idea, it is a primarily exploration of intimacy, tranquility, and color.

I was primarily inspired by the words “nor earth, nor boundless sea” from Shakespeare and the words “nor height, nor depth” found in the book of Romans when Paul illustrates the immeasurable extent of God’s intimate love. I found that both phrases lend themselves to the image described previously. For myself, there is an unmatched calming (yet energizing) experience that I cannot find elsewhere than when I am in the ocean: the silence, the warm air, the biting cold water, the slow waves—painted with greens, golds, silvers, and purples yet enveloped by the color blue.
