Barcelona has a history of producing and cultivating techno talent, however, in this instance, Paula Cazenave has been a mainstay in its scene since moving in 2003. From studying audiovisual production and sound technology, to having played gigs around the world alongside the likes of Ben Klock, Freddy K, Truncate and Nina Kraviz, she is without question an influential figure. Running the excellent Combine Audio label allows her to show qualities needed for selecting superb club music, while also releasing on other labels such as Ben Sims' Symbolism, Marco Faraone's UNCAGE and Berlin's Rave the Planet, which is linked to the legendary Love Parade. This exclusive mix has raw energy, jackin' rhythms, slick mixing skills and of course, a prime insight to an underground tastemaker's renowned expertise. SPEZIAL - Manifest EP

SPEZIAL returns with another bold experiment in the art of epic pop songcraft and restless sonic exploration, once again pooling creative minds sharpened in some of the UK’s most influential alternative music.

As the previous KIDS EP series showed, the SPEZIAL project has a whirlpool effect which draws in close collaborators from many different corners. It’s a studio project which revels in the process and seeks out the best tools and the best people to use them.

Whipped up by musical director and relentless energy Shahab Notghi, the Manifest EP finds core SPEZIAL composer and player Stew Jackson (Massive Attack, Phantom Limb) once again lending his multi-instrumental touch to seven new original tracks, backed up by drums from Clive Deamer (Portishead, Radiohead, Roni Size). A new figure in the SPEZIAL story is Joe Jones, the esteemed head engineer from the world famous Rockfield Studios in the Wye Valley, who injected vintage warmth and cosmic textures into the sound with reel-to-reel tape loops, Nagra tape machines, old BBC oscillators and more besides. This bursting, vital mix was then glued together once again by the legendary Ewan Pearson.

In keeping with the crossover between established visionaries and brilliant new artists, on Manifest we’re introduced to the vocal talent of Poppy Mâché, discovered by Notghi and spurred on with a copy of Ableton Live to embrace the SPEZIAL mode of creating on pure instinct and chasing inspiration before the ideas start stalling. Snarling and cooing in equal measure, she sounds old beyond her years across Manifest, weaving a lyrical web that’s relatable and compelling in equal measure.

In keeping with the SPEZIAL tradition, the grandiose vision of the original tracks is cast off into the dancefloor realm through a sharply curated set of remixes. On this occasion, the undisputed baron of UK techno Dave Clarke applies his mighty legacy to a bruising half-tempo electronica version of ‘Bad State’ while Frankfurt legend Roman Flügel creates a seductive strain of noirish electro-pop out of the component parts of ‘Love’. That leaves it to Notghi to don his Paradise Circus cape and lay down a heavy, distorted backbone to ‘Lady’ which channels turn-of-the-millennium cyberpunk as much as the cutting edge of hardware-rooted sound design.

It’s the crackle of energy and restless momentum which brings so many vibrant ideas to the fore on Manifest EP, yet again widening out the SPEZIAL scope while solidifying the core creative team invested in the project, wherever it might lead.

This is my live DJ mix of the songs on Robert Hoods 1994 classic album which spawned a whole movement - Minimal Nation. The album was remastered with a couple of extra cuts included. I absolutely love the grooves and funk in these productions, which still rock today and are such fun to mix and use. 

I'm recording these DJ mixes live from my studio in one take, mistakes and all, of albums and artists that inspire my own productions or nights out.

Alongside Jeff Mills and Mad Mike, Hood is one of the original members of Detroit techno group Underground Resistance. His style is characterised by minimalist and experimental tones with an assertive groove. He is also Floor Plan. Lose yourself in his back catalogue.

DJ Mix Of Robert Hoods Minimal Nation

Bangin' It Back is a mix series I started to showcase some of the old 140 BPM techno that I played during my "heyday" as a DJ, in the early 2000's. That was the techno that I loved, bangin techno! When everything slowed down and went minimal I missed it. Now it's coming back finally, and I was able to find some new tracks to put together. It was fun mixing it, and I just jammed it most of the way out, like old times. IT's more heavy on the clubby/housey side of techno, but there's some darker, grittier tunes too, and then a few electro tunes at the end. Enjoy! Please repost if you enjoy it!

In 2001 he begins to promote himself as a Dj in the local circuit playing in clubs and music festivals in south of France In 2006 a very important year for the artist, he teams up with WOH association (Way of house) members, Bastien Grine, Greg Delon, and begin to participate in the A-nimé festivals and electropulse festivals held during the summer in sout pf France. has shared decks with Marc Houle, David K, Brodinski, Nic Fancuilli, Danton Eeprom, N'To, Bastien Grine, Paul Nazca, Greg Delon, Ivan Smagghe, Jennifer Cardini, Chloe, André Dalcan, Cebb aka Sebastien Thibaud, The Dualz, Basteroid, Loulouplayers, Nhar, Da Fresh…, and others. In 2009 he meets up with George Paar in Nîmes starting a friendship that has emerged the love of underground techno. His music are a unique representation of techno in its raw nature.

SPEZIAL is the brainchild of South Coast UK artist and producer Shahab Notghi, drawing on a rich pool of talent including Massive Attack collaborator Stew Jackson, The Chemical Brothers engineer Steve Dub, Radiohead's Clive Deamer and celebrated producer Ewan Pearson to create powerful, brooding vocal-led electronica.

The collaborative project helmed by Shahab Notghi  is a result of obsession - the endless pursuit of artistic possibility wherever the inspiration and sources come from.

Colin Pierce is a 23 yr veteran DJ originally from Pittsburgh, PA, USA, where he became highly and widely respected for his skills and integrity. 

Colin is a lifetime music junky. He is the first human to be born with headphones already on! Seriously though, since 6 years of age he has been actively seeking, collecting, and enjoying, music, and that was in 1983, so you do the math! Colin had 2 bands in high school, and wrote all or much of the music for them. He started mixing records in 1998 shortly after his first rave party, and hasn't stopped, always continuing to refine his formidable technical skills and dynamic range, pushing the limits of technology and experimentation in the tradition of jazz improvisationalists. Always live, never rehearsed or pre-planned, colin is the dj's dj, and is highly respected by all those who know him or have ever seen him do his thing. Colin is working on 6 years clean and sober, and does not play gigs often anymore, focusing on discovering God's purpose.
