Separation Distress _ Rym Nouioua

In this collaborative work, Diana Karle and Rym Nouioua have focused on cold arousals, an adaptive mechanism used by hibernating bats to reduce the energetic cost of disturbance and conserve fat during hibernation. The use of cold arousal leads to successful hibernation. However, changes in climate can disrupt these mechanisms, leading to frequent awakenings and the burning of fat during the winter months, which in turn can lead to the death of the hibernating bats.

Bio: 
Diana Karle is a sound and performance artist working primarily with experimental formats. Her projects combine field recordings and soundscapes of human, non-human and geological agents with live electronics. She combines approaches from acoustic ecology with electroacoustic compositions.

Rym Nouioua (MSc) is a doctoral researcher and independent artist who uses her expertise in bat research and bioacoustics to create nature-oriented art projects. Her work aims to bring ecology into the world of art and raise awareness for environmental issues. Using acoustic signals, Rym Nouioua identifies the presence - or absence - of individual species, mainly bats and draws conclusions about biodiversity and the state of the ecosystem.

'June' is a tech-house roller fit for the terraces. There are wild, pulsating riffs, soft chords, huge Miss Kittin vocals and a bassline that bumps from beginning to end.

Rym Nouioua, a german Wildlife Ecologist and Sascha Brosamer of Antidot Records invited me to make a song using bat samples on a podcast about Bats and Sound- airing in 2021- Berlin.

Bat - Dub

Independent artist and ecologist based in Vienna, Austria. Rym Nouioua is a scientist in the early stages of her career, with interest in ecology and conservation. In addition to her scientific studies she started to experience environmental issues in artistic contexts. Her ArtWorks are usually based on critical perspectives of natural conservation, climate and feminism. In 2018 she started her current project “batsound and beats”. In this project she examines the communication of bats by recording the ultrasonic sounds (bioacoustics) and presenting them into soundperformance. Hereby she tries to illustrate the interrelation of human and non-human and create points of contact of human and animal habitats.
