#MadaMixTape: 2017 MENA Music Spotlight

I recently found a whole bunch of mixes I did between 1992 and 1997 and started the long process of ripping the cassettes to mp3.
As I work through them in no particular order I’ll put them up here for download.
Remember the sound quality isn’t great as they were all recorded through a mixer with no EQ and committed to cassette on a shabby home stereo…But what the hell, it’s that authentic 90s sound through and through.

Commissioned by Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma to write the music for their opera based on Charles Darwin and his book 'On the Origin of the Species', The Knife decided to make this a collaborative process, working with artists Mt. Sims and Planningtorock for the first time, to capture the huge width of the Darwin and evolution theme.

Make It Work

This project was a collaboration with Felix Obelix (aka Wendy Spitzer), which explored how vulnerability and openness plays out in artistic practice and collaboration. The experiment consisted of five consecutive days of musical improvisation from July 11th to July 15th, 2016. The improvisations were based on photographs we chose, which depicted different themes of vulnerability.

We used the photographs’ histograms (i.e. curves which indicate shadows, highlights and mid-tones in a
photograph) as our graphic score for the improvisations. 

In the improvisations Felix Obelix played different instruments, while I played live electronics.
