Handbook is a multi-instrumentalist from York who makes beats gathering more than 600K listeners every month. Inspired by artists such as J Dilla or Flying Lotus, and looking to create soulful music, he has been active since 2010. He will release a new EP called Fortunate, which the first extract is ‘Tales’. Made of mellow synths and a laidback beat, the track has a very 2000s vibe. With the use of delay the track feels like floating inside a peaceful blue ocean.

EdLampkin is a vinyl collector and curator based in Slap City California. If he is not eating spicy dumplings or, drinking cappuccinos ironically, he is most likely hoarding a rare slap. At times, he is summoned to bless the masses with his superior musical selection capabilities at his discretion. Only grateful and refined ears will get to scavenge on his musical droppings before he retreats back into his dark pit of depravity.

Here are a few words about this mix from Ed: "This mix is a continued exploration of my affinity with the music of Brazil. Since my youth I have been mesmerized by Brazilian music. A good portion of my life has been spent appreciating the multifaceted, rich, and diverse array of sonic delights Brazil had to offer. Samba, Bossa, Jazz, Soul, Funk, Boogie, AOR, and now Hip-Hop. The consensus among many if not all self-proclaimed music lovers is that Brazilian music slaps. Although universally recognized to be some of the best music in the world, it appears that many of the gems are still left under appreciated. In my search for dance floor slaps and hard boom bap I was pleased to run into many obscure and charming little love songs, a guilty pleasure of mine. These songs are contemplative, sweet, and sensual. They ooze that very special Brazilian ingredient that makes it Brazilian. That sad/happy melancholy that has no direct translation in our language. A feeling I know and love but can only describe and articulate though the audible vibrations of a faraway place. Saudade."

"I made the album this spring during an intense creative period back home in Stockholm. I was obsessed with my studio, I wanted to spend all my time awake there. I found out I was getting evicted from it, this sudden chock turned into a decision to do this album. It made sense, like an "end of an era" thing. I was pretty isolated back then, spending almost all my time outside of the studio with my daughter Bozi. She snapped the cover photo while I was picking out records for a gig. I never wanted to leave the studio during these months, but I realise now how the breaks with Bozi worked for the process - they gave me space to reflect on the music I was making. Good news! Pacific Rhythm is once again connecting game with one of Toronto's most promising young duos, Active Surplus. Active Surplus is the collaborative project from Evan Vincent (AKA Emissive) and Ian Syrett, who also appear on this past winter's fourth volume of Rhythms Of The Pacific.

Their new self-titled EP is their love letter to the house music sound that first sprouted from the West Coast. It's laid-back, groovy and touched with lovely instrumentation, like the plucked strings on "Meera," a heartfelt tribute to a loved one. "Meera" and the billowing groove of "Ambrosia" might remind you of early Pacific Rhythm releases, with dainty arrangements and chords that waft across the rhythm section.

But Active Surplus put their own spin on things. The EP was heavily inspired by the stuttering drum patterns of Baltimore club, which undergird each track in subtle but noticeable ways, making the grooves that much skippier and slippier. "Yeye" calls to mind the feeling of early Walt J material and delivers a devastating earworm that will stick with you long after the lights have come on at the end of a late night Dance Opportunity, while the looped woodwinds and cool-blue keyboards offer a sweet melodic hook on the irresistible "One Beyond." There's a confident, naturalistic quality to these rippling grooves and silky sounds, which the duo credit to an obsession with water. After all, in their words, "we might not live by the ocean, but we're all H20 on the inside."
