Fracture’s Slow Astro concept returns for another instalment of slow edits from the Astrophonica back catalogue. Reducing the tempo right down to 97bpm for that extra baggy vibe and recorded live on a Mackie mixing desk with added dub siren and FX - an overnight sleeper train journey to the slower depths of music from Sully, Client_03, Nikki Nair, Damian’s Ghost and more.

“I have always been intrigued by playing audio back at different speeds. Be it speeding up breakbeats to make Jungle or slowing down pop music to make drawn out nostalgic atmospheres. Some of my first experiments with pitch were with my brother. We’d record ourselves onto cassette and use the hi speed dubbing feature to change the pitch of our voices. If you held the play button down half way it would cause the tape to play back at different speeds - mangling the audio. Over the past year I became fascinated with playing on 7 inch records on 33. New rhythms, grooves and textures appear when you change the pitch of audio. It can totally alter the emotional quality of a piece of music you thought you knew so well - creating new artefacts with a familiar yet dreamlike quality. I started to wonder what the Astrophonica catalogue would sound like slowed down. So I made ‘Slow Astro’. Shout out DJ Screw…”

One fateful day entitee sent me Red Army’s way and we’ve been fast friends ever since. Not only has this guy overcome some seriously intimidating personal hurdles to play, make, master and put out some of the best (and wildly underrepresented) jungle and drum and bass out there, Red Army also finds the time and energy to be one of the most genuine, enthusiastic, and easy to work with people I’ve ever met. He immediately hopped in the fray with EMP, forming a large part of the backbone of our Wednesday Slappy Hour shows, involving us in his Armory release parties, and helping us organize events, releases, and connect with other amazing artists. He’s also given us this fire 95 minute mix with so many illegal dubs we decided to cut the tracklist and let the music speak for itself. Enjoy.

Hailing from punk and a Prodigy-loving family, his interest in electronic music has taken him on a sonically varying journey which shows no sign of letting up any time soon. 

We recently spoke to Crypticz, who established himself at Diffrent Music, a label that’s been at the forefront of pioneering electronic sound since 2010. 

These progressive sounds are showcased in their latest album Revolution Of The Giraffe, which features tracks by label veterans like Arkaik, Lakeway and Crypticz himself. 

A lover of vinyl records and a wide range in music taste, Jordan Parsons’ Crypticz project has been in a state of flux lately. Having not played to a live crowd for a year now, the Bristol-based artist believes a self-indulgent approach to his music has seen a decline in club bookings but his recent return to the recently resurrected SWU radio station means he’s back on the airwaves regularly shelling out leftfield bangers.
