And now for something completely different. Following Sofa’s no-nonsense jungle adventure, we now have something so utterly nonsensical and ridiculous it will either enrage or delight you. Please welcome gladde paling. 

The smoothest eel this side of the Scheldt, part merrymaker, part mad scientist, gladde paling has been tickling fans silly with his intense two minute hype bullets for exactly a year. Launching last July, his signature is based in finding daft, surreal and plain stupid samples and flipping them into meme-ified missives that flex between jump-up, hardcore and hard dance. 

Literally anything is fair game to this young talent. From the announcement sound on a Dutch Intercity Sprinter to sounds of chickens, sirens, strange spoken vocals, his own Instagram followers and cult theme tunes anyone who grew up outside of The Netherlands will have no clue about.   

Sitting on the fence is impossible. You will either love or hate it. But no one can deny the freshness gladde paling offers amid a sea of identikit dark rollers and emo copies right now. As he says himself in this interview, people don’t go to a rave... so why be serious?

Liam Lakeway Ralph is one of those joyously unclassifiable artists. One minute he’s slapping us with slithering, snake-like D&B on labels like Unchained, the next he’s tearing apart our souls with heavily emotional grime-inspired beats on Sweet Box, the next he’s shredding up the breaks with junglist switches on Cocobolo. And that’s just this year alone.

Liam Lakeway Ralph is also one of those one of those scarily lucky cats… One minute he was left floundering from a pretty brutal label closure (Med School RIP), the next was faced with complete rave shutdown (Covid RIP), the next he was suffering bleeding on the brain and seizures with doctors throwing around scary words like tumor!

For a while it was one of the most terrifying situations you can imagine. Fortunately he’s fully recovered, back in good health and more inspired than he’s been in many years. Everything you hear on this mix is the sound of a man who isn’t just back on his A-game, but on another entire cosmos of inspiration and appreciation.

Literally Blossoming into the scene in 2021 on Overview, then sealing the deal with a follow up EP on Critical Music's Binary series the following summer, he’s another exemplary tale of lockdown silver linings as he ploughed every bit of furlough time into what began as a mere curious interest… And has now turned into a fully fledged life obsession.

No big plans or grand designs; just a love of vibrant, springy, unbounded sonics (and levels of respect for all religious dubstep movements) that has now mutated into a strong reputation for making leftfield bass music with a wily, fizzy, instantly recognisable signature.

Unique, untamed drum arrangements, lush vocal textures and more twists and turns than an itchy snake, so far his output has been within the drum & bass realm. But as 2023 progresses we are set to experience plenty more sides to YAANO’s vision across the dancefloor landscape.

Dave Columbo Jenkins is the shiny finished product, the friendly host, the clued up interviewer, the public-facing consummate professional.... 

NODAVE is the greasy, oily engine that powers it all. Revving away behind the scenes 24/7, spuffing out toxic fumes and oil slicks everywhere.   

NODAVE is the part of my brain that keeps me up all night fizzing with ideas. He tells me everything is amazing and everything is shit, often at the same time. He wants to listen to every favourite tune and every exciting new tune he's yet to hear... All at the same time. 

NODAVE wants to do everything right at this minute without even checking if it's safe or practical. NODAVE is the fire that will never go out.

And this is how he sounds musically. 

To celebrate the fact we've hit mix number 50 since launching 1 More Thing officially last June, I've taken on this one myself. The last time I was making mixes and sharing them on forums (via CDs in the post) Soundcloud didn't even exist! 

It's sketchy, hyperactive and very wobbly in various places. I don't sync. I don't mix in key. And quite frankly it shows. But shheeesh I own some absolute bangers!

Genreless, genderless, limitless… Ghost Hardware has served up the biggest mix we’ve had so far in the 1 More Mix series. 

A wild ride that flexes creatively from 120 – 170, taking in everything from breaks to jungle, techno to grime, dubstep to house, the London artist has been waiting to put out a sonic statement like this since they first emerged as an artist four years ago in 2019. And trust us; they’ve gone IN. 

It’s a mix of Essential proportions and it resonates with everything 1 More Thing stands musically and ethically. We covered Ghost Hardware’s No Reality label quite extensively last year when it launched. A label, movement and experience that they explained at the time was inspired and motivated by “blurring the lines between realism, surrealism, light, dark, fiction and non-fiction.”

Both parties stacked with exciting, forward-thinking names across the bass spectrum, we can’t wait to celebrate our first anniversary with these beautiful DJ humanoids, especially as each of them has played a role in our development so far. Artists like Plasmator. 

Frequently appearing in our Freshest Drum & Bass playlist, and previously spotted on this site as one of our Artist Of The Week features last August (a regular series we hope to bring back soon), Plasmator’s passion for the culture and dedication to the craft has been paying off in a major way in recent years. 

Clocking up releases on the likes of Guzi’s GZ Audio and Sola’s Grand Theft Audio, very few months go by without a key release from the Plymouth artist. Most recently he was rose to the top of a hundreds of entries in a high profile DJ Rap remix competition where his remix of her iconic Saviour tune smashed the Beatport hype chart. 

Meanwhile in his capacity as a DJ, Plasmator’s years of skill-honing and genre-hopping have led to a masterful vibe that can cross all groove terrains in the most exciting of ways. Currently co-running a multigenre night in Plymouth called Bedlam Ball, his sets can take you on a journey like this.

Hailing from Moss Side, Manchester, his surroundings growing up in a Windrush hub ensured that his path led only one way. 

From attending free parties in his younger years to celebrating three years of running his successful multi-genre label, Spynal Records, Dili has come a long way on his journey. His mix is also a journey that covers all ends of the drum & bass spectrum.

Finding inspiration from his family, his city and his life experiences, Diligent Fingers breaks boundaries in his productions by speaking about them in his tracks. Most notably, Cabin Fever, where he touches on his mental health.
