This is a digital conversion from an old cassette tape of "The Subculture Show" hosted by the late Tim Kerwin. It aired on 102.7 KIKX in Colorado Springs and surrounding areas in the mid-late 80's.

Sound quality will vary by episode and track. These shows are not converted or posted in any particular order, as I had nothing to indicate actual dates other than Tim's descriptions (when given).

A very melancholy song by The Cars, "Drive" was written from the perspective of a guy who's watching a woman (who he presumably used to date) "going down the tubes," trying to get her to take a hard look at what's going on in her life. 
 "Drive" became The Cars' highest charting single in the United States, peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart; on the Adult Contemporary chart, the song went to No. 1

Airing on Top 40 format station 102.7 KIKX in Colorado Springs every Wednesday at 10pm during the mid 80's, The Subculture Show was a welcome break from the daily mainstream pop. Hosted by the late Tim Kerwin, The Subculture Show served as an introduction to many young adults of the time to a more obscure, underground slice of music and culture. 

Tracks from bands such as New Order, Depeche Mode, Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, Simple Minds, Fuzzbox, Ultravox, Bauhaus, Danse Society and the like were broadcast to eager ears in the area.

Listening to these broadcasts during my formative teen years and hanging out at the local club really helped to shape my lifelong interest (obsession?) with "alternative" music. Beginning with punk, post-punk, new wave, etc and eventually evolving into "goth", industrial and futurepop.

I decided that these old cassette tapes that I have carried around with me for nearly the past 30 years, from city to city...home to home, should finally be converted to mp3 so that they will last.

As can be imagined, the sound quality of some of the recordings are better than others. Honestly, I'm surprised that some of them sound as good as they do after all this time. Quality of magnetic tape was obviously never meant to last!

Hopefully I can share these recordings with other people who also enjoyed the show as much as I did. :)
