Nincom is proud to present Battlemania 2.1: (Re)Birth of the Cruel, an upgraded edition of the arcade beat 'em up sensation that gives the experience a new lick of paint, whilst keeping the core of the experience intact. Gameplay tweaks include a revamped combo system for a greater degree of depth, as well as brand new combos and moves for every playable character. All the difficulty modes have been completely rebalanced, from enemy count to the amount of health they take, making for a much smoother experience on the easier difficulties and a far more brutal one for those bold enough to try the harder modes.

But that's not all! The original version of Battlemania 2 only featured the one gameplay mode. This updated edition includes two additional gameplay modes: Survival, and Training. In Survival mode, you can choose to either play one, a selection of four, or a full game run wherein you have no additional lives, a greatly increased health-bar (which also periodically recharges, though health pickups can be grabbed for faster recovery), and must simply try to last as long as you can. Levels will play on a continuous loop once they have been beaten (or once the four or full game runs have been completed)- the game ends when you run out of health. Instead of points, this mode tracks the number of enemies you kill- try to take down as many as you can! Bosses can be toggled on or off, and boss kills are tracked by a separate counter. Training Mode is exactly what it says on the tin; pick from either a mode exclusive stage or one of the game's main playable levels, pick whether you want to fight enemies or bosses, and go ham practising all the moves! Players have no health or lives and simply tank hits; enemies and bosses can have their health toggled on or off.

The real game changer is the introduction of a brand new playable character- Lunis the Dream Traveller! Designed with a low skill floor and a high skill ceiling, Lunis is a character that's easy to pick up but devilish to master; those who do, however, will quickly find him to be the most devastating member of the Kingslayers yet! He even comes with his very own level, taking the total count up to 9. This stage is available in both Survival Mode and in the  main game.

Finally, this release includes additional content and a number of different elements and options that can be tweaked. First up is the Gallery Mode, wherein a selection of character and stage renders, concept art, official art, the game's various cutscenes and trailers can be unlocked by meeting numerous milestones or completing various challenges across the main game and Survival Mode. The game's distinct cel shaded graphics can now be tweaked- you can leave them as they were in the original release, opt for softer colour based shading, or swap it out for hard black shadows as you see fit. All characters now have alternate costumes that are unlocked by both clearing the main game with them and reaching certain kill totals in Survival mode- each character has a total of three additional outfits to unlock (their normal outfit from the series they originate from, outfits based on the ones worn by the Brave Herts in the original Battlemania, and a set of outfits designed by returning Nincom staff member Tetsuya Miyamoto). And last but certainly not least, Nincom's main in-house sound team Gonkaka return to provide additional music for the new modes and menus, as well as brand new, individual battle themes for each boss encounter- with the option of switching between those or the original boss music available in the sound options.

[No Chorus] Seattle Remix [+RPP]

This one took a little while to get going; I'd started fiddling with concepts as early as December here or there, but nothing was really sticking for longer then an initial sketch. I'm honestly surprised this take came together as quickly as it did once I got the ball rolling, but I'm hardly going to complain- the training mode stage tune was quickly becoming one of the major humps of the project, and I'm glad to see the back of it. I am happy with the end result, though- it flows nicely, it's of a decent length (due to the nature of the mode, I wanted the song's runtime to be a touch longer before it looped), and it's got the right "Y2K" vibe to it that I was shooting for (I mean I've been shooting for that in basically every song on the project in some capacity, but for this one especially it was extra vital).  The title's a reference to the Purgatorio portion of Dante's Divine Comedy, by the way (from wikipedia: "Dante receives eleven distinct requests for prayer from individual souls in Purgatory, with most of the requests coming from souls in Ante-Purgatory and with the frequency of requests decreasing as he progresses through Purgatory.")

Training Mode Stage: Saint J92000 Debug Register

One of the upper echelons of the Saint J92000 computer- only available to Admin staff in normal circumstances- the Debug Register is essentially a digital playground where every single aspect of the computer can be tested and manipulated without adversely effecting the rest of the machine. The Kingslayers have been granted access to the region, as well ad given admin permissions, for the purposes of training and honing their skills. Due to its function-over-form designation, the area is constructed out of dense yellow wireframes against a start black background, through which endless roams of code in a variety of languages drift- though the terrain of the locale can be manipulated and shaped based on data fed into it if the active users so desire.

Takayuki Mitsuyoshi, Denji Koshiro - Eleven Prayers (Training Stage: Saint J92000 Debug Register)

Christ, I started this one I think back in... March? Maybe February? I forget, but it's been A Minute. As you can imagine, that's mostly down to it fighting back hard each time I tried to get anywhere with it, which was both stressing me out and depressing the shit out of me. It and Kain's themes were the main contributors to my swerve in focus to writing for a bit- I was genuinely losing my mind trying to get either song into shape.

But it's done. Its over. Its finished.

... and I'm actually quite pleased with it!

It's not perfect- I know the rhythm of the sample pack rap slips in places, for one (because the rapper themselves slipped or did weird shit with their cadence when recording which makes timing them a nightmare- there was another batch I wanted to use but the timing was so wacky that nothing I did seemed to make it flow)- but it's about as hard, fast, and brutal as I was aiming for. Seriously, do bare the volume of your device or speakers in mind when listening to this one- it's, uh, really not for the faint of heart.

Oh, yeah, references; The first half of the name scheme follows Pied's vanilla BM2 tracks ("292" = BPM, "ZB" = Zettabyte), and the "alive GOTO dead" bit is of course a reference to Go To commands in older programming languages (which I associate most closely with the ZX Spectrum because apparently I'm not enough of a Bri'ish stereotype already)
