The latest release from NYC’s psychedelic rock trio Analog Birds, “The Tiger’s Grin,” is a harmony-laden acoustic rock song that recalls the summery optimism of The Byrds and the laid-back spaciness of late-period Pavement.

The psychedelic rock trio - vocalist Isobel Morris (formerly Asa Milbankx, now transitioning from male-to-female), bassist Ali A.B. and guitarist Timothy McNicholas - have long displayed a Harry Nilsson-style penchant for exploring new sounds and musical styles with each respective release.

With “The Tiger’s Grin,” Analog Birds have once again switched modalities with a track that sounds unlike anything previously heard in their catalogue, with their impeccable melodic and harmonic sensibilities on full display. 

As with the group’s past releases, “The Tiger’s Grin” is entirely self-produced. The track spotlights the group’s considerable musicianship, from Timothy’s tapestry of acoustic rhythm guitar, six-string banjo, and psychedelic lead guitar to Ali’s driving bassline, which periodically pokes its head out for Paul McCartney-style melodic flourishes. 

Isobel’s lead vocal blossoms into two-and-three-part harmony, expressing hard-bitten realism in the verses (“this love you once thought infinite/is evaporating bit-by-bit”) and surrealist, picture-book lyrics in the choruses (“where will the tigers go / they wander to and fro / though the woods, the fields, and the desert / and into the meadow”).

"The Tiger's Grin" sets a new course for Analog Birds, which they hope to explore further on future releases. It's the perfect musical retreat for the doldrums of late summer. Enjoy!

Ali A.B. - The final third of the Analog Birds, Ali has played in and written for a variety of projects spanning a vast array of genres.  With most of those projects being financially unsuccessful and many being abandoned or downright awful, he was forced to take a job at a sewage treatment plant.  
When I Find a Home is a piano piece composed over three January nights in the frigid hours between 1-5am, in the bowels of a massive sewage plant, during the graveyard shift, between taking readings, operating equipment and running tests.  Ali hopes this series of compositions will serve as examples that the flower of music can bloom even in the coldest, darkest and shittiest places.
