Solid Steel (1st November) Having announced that Four Tet will be joining the line up for the Solid Steel 25th Anniversary night at Fire in London on 6th Dec, we now hand over the decks to him for a 2 Hour exclusive mix. 
Four Tet's history with the show extends back to his first mix in 2001 and part of the Solid Steel US Tour that year with DJ Food, DK and Bonobo. He was also the first guest at the monthly Solid Steel club night in 2004, with more mixes to follow and his music has been consistently played on the show. 

As with all our 25th Anniversary guests, we asked for something different and here's what he said about his mix;

"This mix is made from unofficial edits and mixes.  I guess these edits were mainly made to be played in clubs and I've always like the tradition of DJs extending and rearranging to make things work in their sets.  Most of the edits here are unreleased because they are just tools for DJs really.  The Black Unity one was done for the Solid Steel US tour that I did in 2001.  Thanks to Daphni, Floating Points and Happa for the edits I got from them."

Hopefully it'll help me be less perfectionist, experiment with more styles, and just get the creative juices flowing.

"Petrified Temple" - This one ended up being really foresty too.  I need to try for some different tones and themes.  It also ends kinda abruptly, there's a lot more melodic material to explore with this one.  But they're just quick sketches anyways.  I started trying to make a recorded acoustic piano piece, but I got really self conscious during recording and I made this instead.  I'll try that again another day...

The track was produced by Soulection's very own IAMNOBODI, who was one of only two producers who created the beats for the project. Breathing Underwater will be available to stream and download via her Soundcloud on Feb 5th. This is her first release of 2014.

Meridian Brothers are back with a new studio album, the bizarre and wonderful ‘Salvadora Robot’. Heading deeper into the tropical rhythms of Latin America and the Caribbean each song on the album focuses on a different style and playfully twists it into Meridian Brothers’s surreal landscape. Released on Soundway Records on 16th June the album was recorded at Eblis Álvarez’s appropriately named Isaac Newton Studios in Bogota, Colombia.

Originally formed in 1998 it was the previous album ‘Deseperanza’ that brought Álvarez’s Meridian Brothers to the attention of the wider world. Released worldwide in 2012, the album’s unique aesthetic and freaked-out blend of Latin rhythms and psychedelic grooves won him new fans the world over. DJ and tastemaker Gilles Peterson selected ‘Guaracha U.F.O (No Estamos Solos...)’ as his favourite track of 2012.

‘Deseperanza’ focussed heavily on salsa rhythms but on his new release Álvarez based each track in a different Latin American style. For example ‘Somos los Residentes’ finds it inspiration in Dominican Republic merengue while ‘Baile ultimo….’ is a slow and sad reggaeton. The lyrics talk of a man who has been sent to the electric chair because he was dancing too much reggaeton, a style that isn’t accepted as “good taste” within Colombia.

The release of ‘Deseperanza’ brought them to Europe for the first time, making appearances across Europe and at some of the prestigious festival including Roskilde and Transmusicales. The band will be returning to Europe this summer.

Slumberjack - Felon

Deon Custom arrives on Terrorhythm in the shape of The Bliss E.P.

A 4 track journey through Dutchman Deon Custom's colourful take on beats and bass begins with a brief encounter in the Angelic Garden, short and sweet at just 1:28, it sets the scene perfectly for the remainder of the trip ahead.

Moving on the listener is welcomed neatly into the title track, Bliss, which is drenched in the cutest kind of technicolour synthesis and vocal cuts you'd expect from Deon, who dazzled listeners with his work on his album, Ametrine, released on Basserk last year.

Picking up the pace, Circles rolls in at 150bpm, with more colourful and energetic flutters and edits as it moves along. Deon Custom's trademark brightness shines through on this summery number which is sure to feature in plenty of those warm weather sets this season.

Closing out the 4 track E.P. is Feathers, which teases you in before a crescendo of brass and synths, paired with military-esque drum work. It winds in and out, constantly changing it's energy throughout. A perfect closure to the E.P., and Deon's debut on the label.

Hackney Wick, London duo Wallwork & RZR (comprised of Tommaso Wallwork and Ady Razor), having cut their teeth as ghost producers for some of the UK's finest for years, are down to leave the ether and substantiate as a powerhouse club act of their own, courtesy of their impeccably-produced Infinite Machine debut, “Mad Techno Invasion".

Breaking the ice with fiery number “The 361”, W&R promptly display their prowess as sleeper cell veterans. Driven by sparse, overdriven, sluggish 808 kicks, a slo-mo title chant, and unrelenting, crisp upbeat claps, the track is an exercise in elegantly reductionist rave, interspersed with wistful junglist harmony and abundant varispeed vox hype.

Second track “Massive Reactor, built on an elektro backbone, toys with liquid, jazzy inflections, but mostly exists in a realm of explosive industrial beats and subversive kick patterns that entail a gut-wrenchingly suspenseful and suspended feel. Masterful sound design pervades.

“Mad Techno Invasion” juggles staggeringly lush UKG passages with metallic, unhinged techno that sometimes slows down into half-step grooves, seemingly channeling oldschool dubstep alumni.

“Tonatiuh Dance”, the most punishing of the five, is a syncopated beast that once again imbues the listener with that suspended sensation – drops from the get-go and never looks back. Constant tension, but calibrated as such that it is always almost too much, but never too much, and most certainly never too little. The track is self-referential in that it segues into sounds of labored breathing, medical machinery, and wild animals towards its finale.

Closer “Keep Going” is a thoroughly explosive rave hardcore finale, reliant on pirate radio mainstays such as BPM-repurposed jungle breaks, tempestuous reese bass, hoover histrionics, and earworm diva vox frantically repeating that the listener should “keep going”. On an EP chock-full of rinse-worthy material, that is advice to be taken to heart.
