never too late, i suppose. i've missed doing my studio diary entries and can't believe it's been since 2015 that i did them. the year is half over but maybe i can still make some worthwhile contributions. i've been busy writing music but haven't uploaded anything to soundcloud. the studio diary series was always helpful to me to keep up my creative energy and seemed to be enjoyed by listeners. so here it is, 6 months late. enjoy.

Energy and Grounding
Life is in a constant tension between free energy, potentiality, and structure, life as we know it today. If there is not a good balance, than there can be a lot of energy, but it has no impact on life, on matter, and we are not able to manifest things around ourselves. And there a people that are too structured. We are looking for a healthy tension, a healthy balance between moving forward and also being able to ground it in life. The basis for this balance is layed very early in life. The quality that we meet in our family, in our mother will determine how much the energy of our soul can ground itself in the body that we are expressing ourselves with. Can our vessel hold the energy?

Energy And Grounding - The Healthy Vessel

In the wet heat of a Japanese summer, legendary musician Ryuichi Sakamoto was joined on stage by Taylor Deupree and the duo of Corey Fuller and Tomoyoshi Date, known as Illuha. The Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media hosted the event as part of their 10 year anniversary which also included a captivating installation by Sakamoto called Forest Symphony. The days surrounding the concert brought the artists together for food, talk and exploration. Informal but meaningful moods that prepared them for performing together.

The performance, an improvised set for piano, guitar, pump organ, and synthesizers, ended up affecting the artists in a deep way. The four, having never played all together before, were taken aback by the level of listening and restraint that flowed between them. The audience sat in a breathless silence, the music offering a respite from the thick July air. As the last hushed note faded into blackness the artists knew right away it had been a deep journey.

It is a fortunate event when a moment like this is captured, as this concert was ( recorded in high quality DSD). Perpetual, named for the eternal and ageless quality of the music, is presented in three movements that traverse from soft layers of synthesizer and processed guitar, to open, airy sections of prepared piano and silence, to finally coming to rest in a most hauntingly delicate lullaby of lonely piano, crackling found objects and field recordings and tones suspended like mists.

Perpetual not only surrounds us and stretches through time but collects that expanse into a single memory, a record of a brief moment where time stood still and four musicians merged into one.

SUDUAYA - Chill Out Set | In Focus | 03/04/2015

Provence-based singer Snem K is most known from this collaboration with The Two Mamarrachos, their song “Teach me” in the Factory Floor remix was a decent underground hit earlier this year which got a well-deserved hype by Mixmag. “Pure Sun” is his new release on Emerald & Doreen, a weirdly happy, warm late summer, golden October song he wrote for his newborn daughter. So there is a lot of love in it! The original is a slow-mo Balearic dub house tune with a earworm good time whistle, which, when we heard it first, reminded us a bit of 1960s movies with Jean Gabin or 1970s movies with Adriano Celentano – a very unique tune indeed and makes you sing along instantly! Do the whistle! Or sing along: Da-Da-Da-Da-…. so good!  Rather want to dance in slow motion? Snem K’s “Dragon Mix” grooves darkly: imagine a 7-year-old-ninja girl dancing and swirling in slow motion through falling red and yellow leaves. Not yet enough groove? Then you will love the hard-hitting “The Two Mamarrachos” remix, featuring a fat, steadily grooving bassline and a spaced-out Kraftwerk-ish lead synth, perfect for the little angel that came from space and then grows more and more into a full-fledged and timeless slo-mo burner. DJ Steef delivers the perfect sunset tune and Extrapillow’s Matin du Sud remix closes this very special EP with a trippy and sun-drenched October synth-disco version for the early hours after sunset. Pure Sun is Pure Fun!

12k is happy to present the debut release on the label from Argentinian composer Federico Durand who has had a series of amazing releases on labels such as Spekk, Own, and Desire Path. Federico and 12k crossed paths on a tour of Japan together in 2014 where the personal friendships among the artists and the label are such a part of what 12k is about. Sharing music and ideas throughout the tour led to an invite to make an album.

It’s no accident that Federico’s music has a dusty air of nostalgia surrounding it. It has always been a very personal affair. Songs inspired family, local life and the world around him are woven by hand with a selection of very physical instruments. He works like a craftsman, piecing together fragments of sound from cassette recorders, small instruments and loopers and creates music that’s as softspoken as he is. No pretenses, no disguises, just the most honest and down-to-earth music that can be made. Broken melodies spinning from tape reels, the sounds of bells and small found objects being played with care... The music is as beautiful as it is introspective, like a small window of antique glass looking right into Federico’s soul.

In his own words:

“A través del espejo in Spanish means “Through the mirror”. I am fascinated with the experience of putting a mirror in front of another: as a miracle, the image turns in a loop that flows into infinity. Loops in the mirror get less clear with each repetition, the color becomes diffuse and greener. When these loops turn into a lullaby we can enter the other side of the mirror: a place of delight and insight.

I always make simple melodies as they are born free. In many pieces, I use cassette recorders as an instrument that play friendly with others such as piano, lyre, toys, bells or effects. I enjoy the possibilities of cutting tape and making loops, reversing, and even using many tape recorders at the same time making air recordings of the sound. The Roland Space Echo or 2880, which are loop-machines themselves, match perfectly with this way of working.

When I see an emboridery I enjoy both the front and back where a mysterious, invisible world suddenly appears. For this reason, I am grateful to the natural sounds made by the machines, the crackle of loops and other sounds that appear while working, as an unexpected gift.

El jardín encantado (The enchanted garden)

  This piece was the first electronic piece. First, I configured simple pitch serial ‘B-A-C-H’, that is contained my Homage to J. S. Bach. Second, I recorded myself with playing flute with all the way of pitched techniques by B-A-C-H serials and Variated series. It contained, various of tonging, various of blowing, key-clicking, and with counterpoint serials. After the recording, I arrayed all of the recorded materials into divided idea ‘dot, line, space’ on the MIDI Program, like painting on the pallet. In this reason, there is no score, made only by the Logic. 
   It played on December 13, 2015’ at the Miller hall of the Manhattan School of Music. The engineer was Hohyeon Kyung, by the composer himself.

this sound is my first (well, second or third) exploration of the error instruments sonic lullaby eurorack module which basically places a music box and a contact mic on a module. it's absolutely beautiful and so much fun. not just the bell sounds of the music box, but all of the mechanical noises and squeaks as well.

this modular patch is quite simple:

sonic lullaby > make noise moraphagene > three sisters filter > intellijel rainmaker

there's a bit of bricasti M7 reverb on the end
